Be it known that I, HENRY D. JAMEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Resistance-Terminals, of which the Jfollowing is a speciiication.
"My invention relates to terminal members tor electrical apparatus and it has for its object to provide a terminal that shall be simple and durable in constructionV and especially adapted for use with groups of assembled resistance units. A
A well known form of resistance for use with electric circuits is illustrated and described in Patent No. 788,686, granted May 2, 1905, to Vestinghouse Electric et Manufacturing Company, as assignee of Hermon L. Van Valkenburg. This resistance comprises a plurality oi. bars of iron or other suitable material, which are supported by independent insulating blocks` having recesses in which the ends of the bars are seated and suitable resistance conductors which are coiled about the rods and are separated therefrom by a wrapping of insulating material. Resistances of this character are often assembled in layers and it is sometimes desirable to provide suitable terminal members which are connected to intermediate points in the resistance group.
According to my present invention, I provide complementary slots in the adjacent walls of the independent insulating blocks which form passages through which terminal members may pass and in which such members may be supported.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lY is a plan view, and Fig. 2 an elevation of a portion of a resistance group provided with the terminal members of my invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation along the line III-III of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, the resistance group illustrated comprises a plurality of bars 1, having suitable wrappings ol insulating material upon which are woundv resistance conductors 2, and also a supporting iframe 3, insulating blocks 4, and a plurality of' terminals members 5. The insulating blocks 4 are supported in channels provided in opposite sides of the frame 3, and their adjacent sides are provided with complementary recesses, or notches 6, which 'form passages through which the terminal members 5 may project.
The terminal members 5 are oi' strap form `f and each of them is given a short offset bend at each end of the passage between the insulating blocks, in order that the members may be securely held in position. The inner ends of the terminal members are provided with projections 7, about which the ends of the resistance conductors may beA wound, or to which they may be otherwise electrically connected and their outer ends are bentsubstantially at right angles to their body portions. The bent portions, as illustrated in the drawings, are drilled to receive screws by means of which conductors may be detachably connected thereto.
Numerous other well known devices may be employed, within the scope of my invention, for electrically connecting any desired conductors with the terminal members.
I claim as my invention: f
l. The combination with a frame and a plurality of resistance elements each comprising a rod or bar, a sheet or covering of insulating material and a resistance coil surrounding said sheet or covering, of independent insulating blocks having recesses in which the ends of said bars are seated and notches in their adjacent walls, and terminal members which project through and are supported in the passages formed by said notches.
2. rlhe combination with resistance units and a frame in which the units are assembled, of insulating supporting blocks having complementary notches in their adjacent sides, and terminal members that project through and are supported in the passages which are formed between the insulating blocks by the complementary notches.
8. A terminal member for electrical apparatus that comprises a body portion, an end projection in the same plane, a bent portion at the opposite end and a binding screw in the bent portion.
4. A resistance group comprising a supporting frame having opposite channels, resistance units and insulating end supporting IOO blocks therefor that are assembled in lthe channels, and terminal members which project through passages formed in and between the insulating bloels.
