SHUTTLE-BINDER FOR LOOlVIS.
Specii'ication of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application tiled February 5,1906. Serial No. 299,609.
To all L11/2,0171, t may concern:
Be it known that I, N AroLEoN BLAN- CHETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Shuttle-Binders for Looms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 'which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in shuttle binders or checks for looms andv consists in the novel construction, comlination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
' One object of the invention is to provide a shuttle binder or check of this character which will be actuated by the picker stick as the shuttle strikes the latter.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, duralile and comparatively inexpensive device of this character which will be very eilicient in operation.
The above and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by means ol' the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view ot a portion ol a shuttle box having my improved shuttle binding or checking device applied thereto,4
the device being in its normal position 5 Fig. 2 is a similar view with parts in section, showing the parts of the device in the position they assume when actuated by the picker stick to bind or check the shuttle; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 4; is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the shuttle binding or check device removed from the shuttle box.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a portion of a shuttle box of a loom, in which the usual shuttle 2 is adapted to he actuated by the usual picker stick The latter is rocked or oscillated in a slot or oponing 4 inthe shuttle box 1, which, as shown, is of the usual form, consisting of a slotted base 5 upon vwhich is adjustably mounted a side plate 6 and an end hood or bracket 7 which serves to guide the shuttle 2 into the box.
The shuttle checking or binding device S comprises a levert), which has one of its ends mounted upon a pivot stud or bolt 1.0, which is adjustable in a slot 11 formed in the baseplate 5 olE the shuttle box. This pivot stud has a .fixed collar which engages thc upper lace of said plate, and a screw-threaded lower end which enters a nut 12 adjustable in a seat formed by ribs 13 upon the under side of the plate The lever 9 is adapted to have its tree end supported upon a projecting lug 1.4 on the hood or guide 7 and to be retained thereon by the usual 'linger 15, as clearly shown in lFig. 3 of the drawings. ln the inner face olt the lever 9 is formed a' longitudinally extending cavity or channel 17, which connects two transverse slots 18-19 in said lever. In the slot 18 is pivotcd, as shown at 20, onel end ol a presser-plate or bar 21 which is adapted to seat in the groove or channel 17 and has at its free end a right angularly extending arm or projection 22 which projects into and through the slot 1). The outward movement of the presser-plate 21 is limited by a stop 23 provided in the-'outer end of the arm or projet-,tion 22. The outer 'liace ol the presser-plate 21., which is adapted to be moved out of and into the channel or groove .17 in the lever 9 so as to bind and rclease the shuttle 2, is covered by a friction or wear surface 25 which is here shown as in the lorm ol5 a strap. The latter has one of its ends secured, as at 26, lupon the pivot end of the plate or bar 21 and its opposite end passed around thc arm or projection 22 of said plate and then around a cam or eccentric 27 to which it is secured, as shown at 28. This cam or eccentric 27 is pivoted at 29 within the slot 19 in the lever 9 and has an outwardly projecting arm 30, by means of Awhich it is operated to draw upon the strap 25 and thereby force the presser-'plate 21 and the portion el" the strap upon the outer face of the latter, inwardly against the shuttle 2 to bind the latter against the inner face of the side 6 o't the shuttle box. The cam lever 30 is adapted to be actuated automatically by the pickerstick 3 when the latter is struck by the shuttle 2 and moved outwardly to a slight extent. This is ell'ected by providing in the outer portion of the slot 1 of the base-plate 5 of the shuttle box, a substantially Tshaped slide 31, which is adjustably connected to the outer end o1 the arm 30. This connection is preferably effected by means of an angular metal strap 32 and a Allexible strap of leather or the like 33. The angle metal strap 32 has one of its ends secured by rivets or the like to IOO IIO
the cross portion of the T-shaped slide 31 and at its opposite end is provided a bolt 34, by means of which the strap 33 is adjustably secured to it. This bolt 34 passes through a longitudinal slot 35 in one end ofthe strap 33 so that the latter may be adjusted upon the strap 32 to vary the length of the connection between the slide and the cam arm 30. The opposite end of the strap 33 is secured upon the arm 30 by engaging the reduced end of the latter with an opening in said strap and passing a split pin or key through a transverse opening in said reduced end, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The operation of the invention is as follows z-When the parts are in their normal position, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, the presser-plate or bar 21 is seated in the groove 17 of the lever 9 and the slide 3l is some distance from the end of the slot 4 of the base-plate of the shuttle box and in engagement with the picker stick 3. l/Vhen the shuttle enters the box and strikes the buffer upon the picker stick, the latter is moved outwardly, carrying the slide 3l vwith it and causing the latter to swing the cam 28 by reason of the connection between the two. As .the cam is actuated the strap 25 is drawn upon so that the presser-plate and the portion of the strap upon its inner face are forced inwardly to bind the shuttle between the said strap and the inner face of the side 6 of the box and thereby check its movement. As soon as the shuttle is thus stopped, the parts Vwill assume their normal positions. This-shuttle binder or check is exceedingly powerful and efficient in operation, since it will instantly stop the shuttle without injury to the same, the picker stick or other parts of the loom.
vI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is 1. In a loom the combination with a shuttle box and a picker stick, of a lever mounted upon said shuttle box, a swinging presserplate upon said lever, a cam pivoted upon said lever, a flexible connection attached to said plate and said cam, a lever to operate said cam, and a connection between the lastmentioned lever and the picker stick, to cause the latter, when struck bythe shuttle, to operate the cam lever and hence also operate the presser plate, for the purpose set forth. v,
2. In a loom the combination with a shuttle box and a picker stick, of a lever mounted upon said shuttle box and formed with transverse slots and a connecting groove, a presserplate seated in said groove and pivoted in one of said slots, an arm upon said plate projecting through the other of said slots, a cam pivoted in the last mentioned slot and-formed with a projecting arm, a strap or the like 4upon said presser-plate and having one end secured thereto and its' other end passed around the arm on said plate and secured to said cam, a slide in said shuttle box carried by said picker stick and an adjustable connection between said slide and the arm of said cam, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- NAPOLEON BLANCHETTE.
