Be it known that I, MAX Josnrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Clarke and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Check-Handling Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to check handling apparatus and .it is more particularly adanted to be used for advertising purposes by delivering checks one at a time, one check to be drawn with each purchase of an article and certain checks entitling the pm'chaser to a premium.
The object of the invention is to provide an attractive but simple and comparatively inexpensive device which can be readily fastened to a show case or other convenient supporting structure and which is provided with simple means for delivering checks one at a time therefrom.
A still further object is to provide apparatus of this character utilizing a plurality of interchangeable check receptacles any one of which may be quickly adjusted to position to have its contents removed one at a. time by the delivery meclumism.
A still further object is to provide an alarm adapted to be sounded each time the delivery mechanism actuated.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in front elevation of the apparatus; and Fig. is a vertical section taken from front to rear of the delivery mechanism and showing by dotted lines the position assumed by said mechanism. when ejecting a check.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 is a hollow base of any desired contour and preferably formed with upstanding arms 2 adapted to receive screws or other means for fastening them to a supporting structure. Arranged within the base is a bell 3 having an arm at extending therefrom and through a slot 5 in the top of the base,
said arm, when swung forward being adapted to actuate suitable mechanism within the bell so as to sound the same. Ears 6 and 7 extend upward from the top of the base and have their upper ends rounded and extending through these cars is a bolt S which constitutes a pivot for an arm 9 extending down ward from the ejecting plate 10. This plate has a circular recess 11 formed in the top thereof and extending rearwardly from this recess is an extension 12 the upper face of which is curved concentrically with the pivot bolt 8. A channel 13 is formed within the upper surface of the plate directly in front of the recess 1 1 and depending from the front end of the plate adjacent the open end of the channel is a linger piece 14 preferably in the form of a hook whereby the ejecting mechanism may be easily actuated manually. A groove 15 is formed in the bottom of the recess 11 and an opening 16 is formed in the bottom of this groove and receives the upper end of the arm 1. A coiled spring 17 is arranged upon the arm and bears at opposite ends on the basel and the plate 10 respectively so as to hold said plate normally pressed upward.
A bracket 18 is secured to the ear 6 by means of the bolt 8 and extends laterally therefrom the edges of the top portion of the bracket being provided with upstanding llangos 19 the inner faces of which have longitudinally extending grooves 20. An arm 21 is preferably formed integral with the ear 7 and extends upward therefrom the upper face of this arm being in the same plane with the lower walls of the grooves 20. These grooves are adapted to receive opposite edges of rectangular plates 22 supporting tubular receptacles 23 said receptacles extending through the plates and being open at their lower ends while their upper ends are pro vided with removable caps 24. One edge of each plate 22 has a slot 25 therein and the plates are adapted'to be moved longitudinally along the top of the bracket 18 so as to bring the lower ends of the tubular receptacles in position above the recess 11.. When a tube is in this position the slotted portion of its plate is directly above the arm 21 and in position to be engaged by a clamping screw 26. A spring band 27 is arranged longitudinally upon the bracket and constantly exerts an upward pressure upon the lower ends of the reccptacles23 disposed thereabove. A desired number of tubularreceptacles 23 may be used in connection with the apparatus the number only being limited by the size of the bracket 1.8. When the receptacles are in place one of them is disposed directly above the recess 11 while the others are arranged above the bracket 18 and in position to be slid one at a time over the recess 11 Whenever the receptacle already in position thereover is removed. Caps 24 are disposed upon all of the tubes except the one nearest the outer end of the bracket 18 which tube is left uncovered so as to permit checks to be easily dropped thereinto.
In using this improved apparatus the receptacle 25 which is directly above the recess 11 and the adjoining receptacle 23 are filled with the articles to be distributed after which the caps 24 are placed in position thereon. The end receptacle 23 is left empty and is not provided with a cap. These articles may be in the form of disks of any suitable material and are preferably of different colors one color when drawn entitling the holder to a premium although if preferred the checks may all be of the same color and provided with suitable marks or reading matter indicating whether or not they entitle the holder to premiums. The spring 27 suports the checks which are thereabove, entirely within the tubular receptacles in which they are placed with the exception of the first receptacle which is disposed above the recess 11. The lowest check of the series within the first receptacle 23 assumes a position within recess 11 which recess is of the same depth as the thickness of the check. When a person makes a purchase the store keeper depresses the finger piece 14 and causes the arm 9 and the plate 10 to swing forward and downward upon the bolt 8. The extension 12 assumes a position below the checks so as to prevent them from moving downward during the operation of the ejecting mechanism, and as the plate 10 swings in the manner stated the arm 4 is also moved forward in the slot 5 so as to sound the bell. As the plate moves downward the outer end of the arm 4 raises the front portion of the check out of the recess 11 and the same is therefore free to slide forward by gravity within the channel 13 and into the hand of the operator. As soon as the finger piece 14 is released the spring 17, which is contracted by the foregoing'operation, returns the parts to their initial positions and the next succeeding check immediately becomes seated by gravity within the recess 1 1 whereupon the operation above described may be repeated. After the checks have been ejected they are returned to the open, end receptacle 23 and when the last check has been withdrawn from the first receptacle and replaced in the last receptacle the screw 26 is removed or loosened and the first receptacle is detached by raising it from position between said screw and the ends of the sides 19. The two filled receptacles are then slid along the bracket 18 until one of them assumes a position above the ejecting mechanindefinitely for the purpose intended.

The receptacle Which has been removed is then inserted between the sides 19 at the outer end of the bracket and the cap 24 is removed therefrom and placed upon the receptacle which was filled with checks ejected by the mechanism. The machine is therefore recharged and it is obvious that by following out the operation above described the machine may be used It is the intention to place a premium check at desired intervals within the stack of checks so that one premium will be drawn after any given number of purchases.
While the machine has been described as a check handling apparatus it is to be understood that the same may be used for discharging coins without in any way changing the structure thereof although if the same is employed as a money changer with coins of different value in each receptacle 23 it will be necessary to utilize separate ejecting mechanism for each receptacle.
The preferred form of the invention has been set forth in the foregoing description but I do not limit myself thereto as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the claims.
I/Vhat is claimed is: a
1. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with a tubular receptacle and a support therefor; of a tiltable member disposed below and adapted to receive an article from the receptacle, and means for automatically disengaging an article from said member when tilted.
2. In an apparatus of the character described the combination witha tubular receptacle having an open end; of a tiltable member disposed below said receptacle, said member having a recess adapted to receive articles from the receptacle, and means for automatically ejecting articles from the recess when said member is tilted.
3. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with a tubular receptacle having an open end of a tiltable member having a recess adapted to receive articles from said receptacle, an alarm, and an alarm actuating device for automatically ejecting articles from the recess when said member is depressed.
4. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with a tubular receptacle open at one end; of a tiltable member disposed therebeneath and having a recess to receive articles from the receptacle, means integral with said member for preventing the displacement of the contents of the receptacle when said member is tilted, a
spring support for the member, and means for automatically ejecting an article from the recess when the member is tilted.
5. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with a tubular receptacle open at one end of a tiltable member disposed below, and having a recess adapted to receive articles from the recep tacle, an alarm, an alarm actuating arm ex tending into the bottom of the recess, and means for returning the tiltable member to its initial position after it has been tilted.
6. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with a receptacle open at its lower end and a support for said receptacle; of a tiltable member mounted upon the support and below the receptacle. said member adapted to receive the contents of the receptacle, means for automatically returning the tiltable member to its initial position after it has been tilted, and means for automatically disengaging articles from said member when tilted.
7. In an apparatus of the character described the ccmbination with a receptacle open at its lower end, and a support therefor; of a tiltable member mounted upon the support and having a recess adapted to receive articles from the receptacle and having a channel extending longitudinally of the meniber, means for automatically returning said member to its initial position after tilting, means for automatically ejecting articles from the recess and into the channel when said member is tilted, and an alarm actuated by said means during the tilting of the member.
8. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with a support; of a tubular receptacle detachably mounted thereon and open at its lower end, a tiltable member upon the support and below the receptacle, said member having a recess to receive articles from the receptacle and a longitudinally extending channel, means integral with said member for supporting the contents of the receptacle when the member is tilted, means for automatically returning the member to its initial position after it has been tilted, and means for automatically ejecting an article from the recess when said member is tilted.
9. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with a support; ol a tubular receptacle detachably mounted thereon and open at its lower end, a tiltable member upon the support and below the receptacle, said member having a recess to receive articles from the receptacle and a longitudinally extending channel, means integral with said member for supporting the contents of the receptacle when the member is tilted, means for automatically returning the member to its initial position after it has been tilted, and means for automatically ejecting an article from the recess when said member is tilted, and an alarm operated by said ejecting means during the movement of the tilting member.
10. In an apparatus or the character described the combination with a support; of a plurality of interchangeable receptacles carried by the support and open at their lower ends, a tiltable member disposed beneath one oi" said receptacles and naving a recess ad apted to receive articles therci'rom, means integral with said member for supporting the contents oi said receptacle when the member is tilted, resilient means for supporting the contents or the other receptacles, and means projecting into the recess in the tiltable member ior automatically ejecting an article from said member when the member is tilted.
11.. in an apparatus of the character described the combination with a support; or a plurality ol interchangeable receptacles carried by the support and open at their lower ends, a tiltable member disposed beneath one of said receptacles and having a recess adapted to receive articles therei'rom, means intogral with said member for supporting the contents of said receptacle when the member is tilted, resilient means for supporting the contents of the other receptacles, means projecting into the recess in the tiltable member for automatically ejecting an article iiroin said member when the member is tilted, and means for automatically returning the tiltable member to its initial position after it has been tilted.
'12. in an apparatus of the character described the combination with a support; of a plurality of interchangeable receptacles carried by the support and open at their lower ends, a tiltable member disposed beneath one of said receptacles and having a recess adapted to receive articles therefrom, means intogral with said member i 'or supporting the contents of said receptacle when the member is tilted, resilient means for supporting the contents of the other receptacles, means projecting into the recess in the tiltable member for automatically ejecting an article from said member when the member is tilted, and an alarm actuated by the ejecting means.

The combination with a support having a guide bracket; of a plurality of tubular receptacles slidably mounted upon said bracket, a tiltable member carried by the support adjacent one end ol the bracket, said receptacles being adapted to successively assume positions above said member, means for securing a receptacle above said member, said member being provided with a recess adapted to receive articles .l'l'Olil the receptacle thereabove, and means for auto 'mat'ioally ejecting an article from the recess when said member is tilted.

The combination with a support having a guide bracket; of a plurality of tubular IIO receptacles slidably mounted upon said. bracket, a tiltable member carried by the support adjacent one end of the bracket, said receptacles being adapted to successively assume positions above said member, means for securing a receptacle above said member, said member being provided With a recess adapted to receive articles from the receptacle thereabove, means for automatically ejecting an article from the recess When said member is tilted, an alarm operated by said means When the member is tilted, and means for preventing displacement of the contents of the receptacle when in position above the bracket and during the actuation of the tiltable member.
15. A tube having a bottom pivoted to move in an. arc extending transversely to the length of said tube to eject an article from the tube, said bottom having a handle for manipulating the same, said bottom being further movable in the same direction to cause said article to fall from said bottom into the hand of the operator manipulating the bottom.
16. A tube having a bottom pivoted to move in an are extending transversely to the length of said tube to eject an article from the tube, said bottom having a handle for manipulating the same, said bottom being further movable in the same direction to cause said article to fall from said bottom into the hand of the operator manipulating the bottom, an alarm, and means for actuating the alarm during the movement of the bottom.
17. In an apparatus of the character described the combination With a support, and a guide thereon; of a delivery member at one end of the guide, and interchangeable receptacles mounted upon theguide, one of said receptacles being disposed above and opening onto the delivery member.
18. The combination With a support and a guide thereon; of a tiltable delivery member at one end of the guide, interchangeable receptacles disposed above the guide, one of said receptacles being located above the delivery member and opening thereonto, and means beneath the other receptacles and upon the guide for holding the contents of the receptacles Within said receptacles.
