UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT N. WEST, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ADAMS LAUN- DRY MACHINERY COMPANY, OF TROY, NEINv YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT N. Vns'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes- Driers, of which the following is a speci'lication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clothes-driers, and the invention relates more particularly to that class of driers in which the articles to be dried are carried by an endless carrier or conveyor through a heating room, the articles being dried in their passage through said room.
The invention has for its object to provide a novel form of carrier to be used in connection with an endless chain or conveyor, the carriers being automatically actuated ai'ter having passed through the drying or heating room, to release the articles which they support.
To this end, my invention aims to provide positive and reliable means for temporarily supporting an article upon a conveyor, the article being automatically released att er having been carried a prescribed distance of the In this connection, my invention is applicable to that type of conveyor used 'in the 'drying or heating room of laundry establishments, the drying or heating rooms being employed for thoroughly drying collars, cutis and similar articles aiter they have been washed.
The invention further aims to provide a simple and inexpensive carrier i'or conveyors, upon which an article can be safely carried, until released therefrom; further, the invention aims to provide novel means in connection with a carrierfor automaticallyreleasing the articles carried thereby, said means being positive in its action and 'free i'rom all danger of being injured by constant use.
`With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement oi parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and referring to the drawing accompanying this application, like numerals oi'hreference designate corresponding parts throughout the s everal views, in which Figure 1. is a side elevation ol" a portion oi a conveyor, illustrating my improved carrier applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a perspective view oi the carrier detached from the conveyor, Fig. 3 is an end view oi a conveyor and carrier, the latter being constructed in accordance with my invention.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a portion o'lthe frame work or track of a conveyor, the reference numeral 1 designating a transverse beam, to which is secured a depending yoke consisting of side arms 2, 2, n hich are bent outwardly, as at 3, 3 to accommodate my improved carrier, which will be presently described. The side arms 2, 2 are provided with in\\ardly extending brackets 4, 4, these brackets supporting a track-way 5 consisting oi rails 6, 6. Upon the rails 6, G is adapted to move a two-n heel conveyor 7, said conveyor being provided with a depending arm S, which assists in supporting a link chain belt 9. The link chain belt 9 is adapted Vto travel over suitable sprocket. wheels arranged in a drying or heating room, also exteriorly oi' said room, and in connection with the belt, a plurality ol conveyors 7 are employed which will iirmlysupport the belt while it is in operation.
My invention resides in providing every other link or so o'l the belt 9, n'ith a depending stem 10 carrying a cross head 11. The cross head 11 is provided with enlargements 12, 12 in which are slidably mounted longitudinally disposed plungers la, 1d having tuberous or knobbed ends 15, 15. The opposite ends oi" the plungers are provided with holding and stripping yokes, 16, said yokes conforming to a yoke having pierced side arms 17, 17 and an inwardly extending lip or lug` 18, by 'which the yokes are supported, these lugs also serving another purpose as will be presently described.
The outer ends of the cross head 11 are provided with rearwardly extending pins or rods 19, 19, said rods being held in the cross head 11 by screws 20, 20. The pins or rods 19 extend through the pierced arms 17, 17 o1E each yoke, and are adapted to support a collar or similar article.
The side arms 2, 2 are provided with inwardly extending pins 21, 21 and 22, 22 and IOO yeyor has passed through the drying or heatupon the inner ends of said pins are pivotally mounted Weighted tripping levers 23, the lower ends of these levers being normally maintained in longitudinal alinement with the inwardly extending lips or lugs of the yoke 16, whereby as the yoke are moved into engagement 'with said levers, said yoke Will be moved rearwardly upon the pins or rods 19, to deposit the article -which they carry.
By referring to Fig, 4l of the drawings, it 'will be observed that the depending stem 10 supports tWo carriers, Which are in alinement with one another and are transversely arranged relative to the belt 9. rl`he stripping levers 23 are arranged exteriorly of the drying or heating room, whereby after the coning room, the articles supported by the carriers will be automatically released therefrom, thus permitting of undried linen or articles being placed upon the carriers, to
passA through the drying or heating room.
rlhe articles, for instance collars, are mounted upon the rods or pins 1'9 betveen the arms 17, 17 of each yoke, the rods or pins 19 passing through one of the button-holes of the collar, and firmly holding a collar YWithin the yoke until the yoke is tripped by the leven 23, at 'which time the forivardmost arm 17 of the yoke acts as a stripping plate for stripping a collar from the pin or rod 19, When the yokes are moved rearwardly, or held stationary While the cross head 1 1 moves forwardly and the plunger 14 slides VWithin the enlargement of said cross head.
I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate a drying or heating room, or a belt conveyor, as my improved carrier and its tripping or releasing mechanism can be readily I used in connection With various types of conveyors and drying rooms.
A I do not care to confine myself to the number of carriers used in connection with the conveyor or to the specific construction and arrangement of parts, as such changes as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
v 1. The combination With a conveyor of a drying room having depending stems, of cross heads carried by said stems, plungers I slidably mounted in said cross heads, yokes l l secured to said plungers and having pierced arms, rods carried by said 'cross head and adapted to extend through said arms, Weighted stripping levers supported by the frame-Work of said conveyor and adapted to engage said yokes, to strip articles from said rods, substantially as described.
2. ln a dry room conveyor, the combination with suitable belt having depending stems, of cross heads carriedby said stems, yokes slidably carried by said cross heads and having pierced side arms, pins carried by said cross rods and protruding through said arms, stripping levers mounted adjacent to said belt and adapted to engage said yokes and move them out of engagement With said rods, substantially as described.
3. ln combination With the conveyor, a plurality of cross heads supported from said conveyor, tWo yokes slidably carried by each cross head, and having pierced arms, means.
carried by said cross head to hold an article between said arms, and means mounted adj acent to said conveyor to move said yokes to release an article, substantially as described.
4. In combination With a conveyor, yokes, rods supported from said conveyor and adapted to pass through said yokes to support articles therein, and means mounted adjacent to said conveyor to move said yokes out of engagement With said rods, substantially as described.
5. In a conveyor, movable yokes supported by said conveyor, means to support articles in said yokes, means to move said yokes relative to said conveyor, to release said articles, substantially as described. 1
6. A carrier of the type described consist ing of two pierced arms, a rod protruding through said arms and adapted to support an article, and means to move said arms to strip said article from saidrod, substantially as described` 7. A carrier of the type described consisting of pierced arms, and a rod protruding through said arms to support an article, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses:
ROBERT N. WEST. l/Vitnesses K. H. BUTLER, JOHN STEvnNsoN.
