To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ADOLPHG. KAUFMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city,; county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Bottle- Caps, of which the fol owing is a specification.
My invention relates to closures for bottles, jars or other receptacles, and particularly t0 so-called bottle caps, that is closures which are fitted over the mouth of the bottle and part of the neck.
The object of my invention is to so construct the bottle cap that it may be removed readily without the use of a tool, although such tool may be used if desired.
The accompanying drawings illustrate severazhways of carrying out my invention.
Figure 1 is a verticalsection showing the neck of a bottle with my improved cap applied thereto Fig. 2 is a top view of such cap Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bottle neck and cap; Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing another form of my invention; Fig. 5 is a top view of the cap shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a vertical section of another form of washer and sealing disk.
The bottle neck A is rovided with the usual beadA forming a s oulder to hold the edge of the cap. As illustrated in Fig. 1; 2 and 3, the cap has a convex edge portion B adapted to fit over the bead A, and preferably the lower edge of said portion B is made wavy or with alternating teeth B and indentations B the tooth portions being strengthened b vertical ribs B while the intervening note I ortions are left relatively weak. A dome-s apedreleasing portionB is located at the center of the cap and preferably provided with radiating ribs B to strengthen'it. This releasing portion, which rises above the edge portion or marginal portion B, is connected therewith bya re-entering flange portion B. Through the throat or contraction B thus formed is projected the contracted neck (.l of-la sealing disk 0 made of material which will not be corroded by the contents of the bottle, and having a bottom flange adapted to engage the end surface of the bottle neck. Between the flange C the marginal portion B is clamped the inner edge of a packing ring 1) made of suitable material such as rubber. This packing ring or washer which engages the upper or end surface of the bottle neck, is thus securely connected with the other parts of the ca The tooth portions B may be provided with outward projections B at their lower ends.
A bottle closed with my improved cap is not liable to leak, but may l)( opened readily in the following manner: A downward pressure or blow is exerted on the dome-shaped releasing. portion B, and by what may be termed a lever action (the contraction or neck B forming a fulcrum) the lower edge of the cap is caused to swing outward, thus releasing the capfrom the bottle. The same result may be obtained, of course, by pressing or knocking the bottle upward against the lower surface of a table or other article. If desired, however, the customary opening tool may be used, the prongs or projections B affording the necessary purchase.
The form of construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 differs from that first described by the useof a somewhat different releasing portion.
This releasing portiori B is also raised or dome-shaped, but instead of having radial ribs, it is provided with annular ribs B Furthermore, the reentering portion or throat B, B of Figs. 1 and 3 is omitted. Instead of the packing ring D and scaling disk C, I employ a single piece D made of cork or other suitable material which at its edge is clamped between the mouth of the bottle and the inner edge of the marginal portion B. This piece D forms at the same time a scaling disk and a packing ring. In Fig. 6, I have illustrated another form of a scaling disk and packing ring. The sealing disk C has a ange made with an annular groove C into which projects the inner edge of the acking ring D made of rubber or other suita le material. This combined packing ring and sealing disk may be employed on either of the forms of my invention hereinbefore described. It will be seen by reference to Figs. 1 and 4, that the line of connection of the releasing ortion B or B with the marginal portion B, is within the lines indicating the cylindrical inner surface of the bottle neck; owing tothis arrangement, the releasing portion exerts the lever action hereinbefore described to free the marginal portion B from the bottle or other receptacle.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bottle or other mceptaele having an external enlargement at the mouth, in combination with a cap having a marginal portion adapted to fit said enlargement, and a raised central releasing portion movable toward the i receptacle to unlock the cap therefrom, the line of connection of the releasing portion with the marginal portion being within the continual ion of the niouths inner surface.
2. As a means for sealing bottles and other receptacles, a cap provided with a marginal K portion adapted to engage an enlargement of the receptacle and having alternate teeth and notches, and also provided with a central re leasing POI'LlOll movable toward the mouth of the receptacle to unlock the cap therefrom.
.3. As a means for sealing bottles and other teeth, and also provided with a central releasing portion movable toward the mouth of the receptacle to unlock the cap therefrom.
4. As a means for closing bottles and other receptacles, a cap provided with a marginal portion having teeth alternating withnotches, and also provided with a raised releasing pori tion movable toward the mouth of the recepreceptacles, a cap provided with a marginal portion having teeth strengthened by ribs and relatively weak portions between said taele to unlock the cap therefrom.
