To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. Ricn- ARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for forming letters or characters on plates or other objects by the operation of giving a die a rolling movement on the face to be impressed, and at the same time causing considerable pressure to be exerted between the two members, forcing the raised portions of the die into the other member, that is made relatively softer than the die.
The present invention has special refer ence to a rolling press designed to impress characters formed on dies, into an engraving plate, the dies being given a rolling movement over the face of the plate, and under considerable pressure.
One of the main objectsof the invention is to provide in such a rolling press, means for causing the die to have a true rolling movement over the engraving plate under considerable pressure, and to prevent any slip or sliding movement between the die and the plate to be engraved thereby.
In a form of rolling press for which I have made application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 284,424, filed October 26th, 1905, a member carrying a die blank is caused to have a true rolling movement over a matrix plate, and under considerable pressure. In such rolling press the member carrying the die blank is oscillated by an operating mechanism with which it en gages by a connection in the nature of a pivot joint, there being a sliding frictional engagement at such joint.
In the present invention there is provided a holding member carrying one or more dies, which member is given a rolling movement over a plate to be engraved, by the operation of a member. But the die holding member hasa rolling engagement with the working member, instead of. a sliding frictional engagement as in the structure of the said ap plieation.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for preventing any slip or sliding friction between the operating member and the die holding member during the oscillation of said members.
A further object is to provide means for preventing any slip between the die holding member and the engraving plate during the rolling of the die over the plate.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for removably securing a series of dies in the die holding member.
A further object of the invention is to provide a suitable gauge located in the plane of operation of the die faces, and to provide means for adjusting the engraving plate to bring its working face into such plane.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for accurately advancing the en graving plate the exact proper distance to engrave the successive lines of characters across the plate.
In the accompanying drawings representing an apparatus embodying one form of the present invention, Figure 1 shows the apparatus in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line AB indicated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view in detail of the clamping means for the plate to be engraved. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the die clamping means. Fig. 5 shows the eccentrics and arm for clamping the dies. Fig. 6 is an end view in perspective of the apparatus with certain portions removed. Fig. ,7 is a similar view, in end elevation, showing in broken lines different positions of the die holder and operating frame. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the dies. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary view'in perspective of the means for elevating the plate to be engraved. Fig. 10 shows two of the adjusting members shown in Fig. 9. Fig. 11 shows the spring means for pressing together the adjusting plates shown in Fig. 10, being a section taken on the line CD indicated in Fig. 1. Fig. 12 shows in perspective means for pressing the series of dies together in the die holder and Fig. 13 shows in perspective the die in the act of rolling over the engraving plate.
The plate P to be engraved is suitably supported upon a table denoted generally by 15; and the die D, or preferably a series of them, are carried by a die holder, denoted generally by 16. The die holder is supported to move whereby the series of dies D will have a true rolling movement over the plate P secured on the table. And this rolling movement of the 1 means of a screw 36 threaded into a nut 37 die holder is assisted by means of an operating member, constructed and arranged to have a rolling engagement with the die holder 16. In the form shown there are a pair of operating members, each in the form of a frame, denoted generally by 17, one being located at each side of the apparatus. These operating members are fulcrumed in alinement to the table or frame below the engrav ing plate P supported thereon and when the die holder is rolled over the plate P, these members will press the dies in the die holder against the plate. On a shoulder 17 of the frame rests a block 18, (see Figs. 2 and 9,) which block on its upper edge has a number of inclined faces 19. A similar block 20 has correspondingly inclined faces 21, that engage respectively with the inclined faces 19. By moving these blocks relatively endwise, one is raised and lowered. But the upper block is prevented from endwise movement by its ends engaging faces 22 of the frame. The lower block 19 is somewhat shorter so that it can reciprocate on the sup orting surface of the frame, and this block is moved by means of a threaded rod 23 engaging a threaded bore 24 in the block. The rod 23 passes through an aperture 25 in the side bar 26 of the frame, and is provided with an operating wheel 27 fast on its outer end. A collar 28 fast on the rod 23 prevents endwise movement of the rod by engaging the side bar 26 with one face, and engaging a stop plate 29 with its opposite face. The adjustmg plates 18 and 20 are yieldably pressed. together by means of a bar 8 having a bent end 9 projecting into a recess 10 in the block 20 the lower bent end 1 1 of the bar engaging one end of as ring 12 whose other end is pressed downwar by screw 13 that is tapped into a late 14 secured on the front of the frame 1.5. he latter plate serves as a guide for the adjusting blocks 18 and 20.
The operating wheel 27 is provided with graduations 30 on its periphery that register successively with a pointer 31 fast on the. frame. By this means a very small fractional movement of the upper block 20, on which the late P rests, will be indicated. By means of the vertical adjustment effected through the hand wheel 27, the plate to be engraved may be slightly lowered, so that the first impression will enter only a part of the required distance, or thickness of the character. T hereupon, the plate can be raised by the hand wheel and the character sunk therein its full height.
The plate P is adjustable transversely to the line of dies secured in the die holder 16. A clamping member or block 32 is guided be tween a pair of bars 33 extending parallel on opposite sides of the frame, by means of tongue portions 34 that slide in slots 35 in the bars 33. The block 32 is reciprocated by secured in the frame 15, as shown in Fig. 2. The screw 36 is rotatable in a bore 38 in the block 32 and prevented from endwise movement therein by collars 39 and 40. Upon rotation of the screw 36, by a hand wheel 41 fast on the end thereof, the block 32 will move toward and from the frame 15, being guided for parallel movement by the tongues engaging the side bars 33; and also by means of a rod 42 slidable in a bore 43 of the frame. A sleeve 44 secured in the bore 43 at the rear of the frame, serves to guide the rod 42 at such portion. A pointer 45 is secured on the block 32, and registers with graduations 7 on the periphery of the wheel 41, for indicating the precise adjustment of the block 32 relative to the frame. The block 32 is provided with two or more clamping means, each consisting as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, of a gauge block 46 having a shoulder portion 47 against which the edge of the plate P is clamped. A lever 48 is pivoted in slot 49 in the block 46, and has one extremity arranged to engage the under face of the plate P and force it against the shoulder 47. The other end of the lever 48 has a slot 50 through which passes a screw rod 51 secured in the block 46. A nut 52 on the rod 51 serves to hold lever 50 with its extremity-clamping the plate P against the shoulder 47. These two clamping members, are adjustable along a plate 53 secured on the upper end of the block 32, to accommodate various widths of the plate P. To secure the clamps in adjusted positions, a wing nut 54 on the lower end of the screw rod. 51 causes a piece 55 to en- TOO gage one edge of the plate 53 and locks the clamp in position.
The die holder 16 has means for positioning and securing a series of the dies D therein, such means being shown as comprising a plate 60 connected with the body portion 61 of the die holder, by means of a number of bolts 62 screwed fast into the body portion, and loosely fitted inopenings 63 in the plate 60. The lower part of the plate 60 is arranged opposite a recessed portion 64 of the holder, in which the dies D are placed. The plate 60 is slightly rocked on the bolts 62 by means of a series of arms 65, that are secured at one end to the outer face of the plate 60, by rivets 66. The bolts 62 are shown as eX- tending through apertures in the arms 65 that register with the apertures 63 in plate 60. A slight free movement is provided be tween the heads of the bolts 62 and the arms 65, to permit rocking of the plate 60 on .the bolts. A series of cams or eccentrics 67 are mounted on a shaft 68, that is swung by an arm 69; the eccentrics operating between the inner faces of the arms 65, near their upper ends, and the adjacent portion of the holder, whereby the swinging of the arm 69 and eccentrics will move these portions of the arms IIO outward away from the holder. This 1noveinent will cause the plate to rock on the bolts as an. axis, and move the lower portion of the plate (it) inward towards the recessed portion of the holder. '.hereby the dies l) are securely clamped between the holder and the plate 60. A hardened bearing plate may be arranged in the recessed portion of the holder to engage the upper ends of the dies. The dies are of uniform length, and this bearing plate is so located as to cause the dies to project the proper distance from the holder and in alinement.
For preventing any lateral movement of the dies in the holder, the clamping plate til) is provided with stop piece 71 for engagement with the end die, and the plate (it) is lengthwise movable toward a stop piece 72 fast in the frame, by means of a screw rod 75 tapped into a threaded bore 74 in the. plate 60; the rod 73 extending from one side of the frame and operated by a handle 7 The means for causing the die holder 16, having the series of dies D secured therein, to have a true rolling movement over the plate P to be engraved, as above stated, is preferably arranged in duplicate at each end of the machine as shown in Fig. 1. These means being identical, the description of one of them will answer for both. The frames denoted generally by l? shown to comprise a top cross piece 76, rigidly connected with a bottom cross pire 77, by a pair of tie rods 78, one at each side. The tie rods are preferably threaded into the lower piece 77 for ad justment relatively of the two end piecesand clamp bolts 94 serve to lock the rods in the split ends of the lower piece 77 when ad justed. The lower cross piete 77 is pivotally connected with the frame 15, by means of a fulcrum piece 79, extending downward from a block 80 that is secured .in the frame by bolts 81. The fulcrum piece 79 engages a groove 82 in the cross piece 77. At each end of the body portion to of the die holder, extends a hub or boss 83, (see Fig. l) on each of which is secured a hardened cylindrical collar 84.
On the end portion of each boss 83 is secured a gear wheel 85, whose pitch line or circle coincides with the periphery of the collars 8st. The periphery of the colla s 84 substantially alin s with the face of the die hearing the character. And these peripheries are arranged to roll on hardened plates 86 suitably set in the frame of the machine, in alinement with the shoulder 47 of each clamp block 46. By oscillating the die holder, by means of a handle portion 87, the collars ft-l will roll on the bearing surfaces 86, which would cause the dies to have a true rolling movement over the top face of the plate I were it not for the fact that the raised charaeters on the dies will lift the die holder at the interl'nediate part of such rolling movement. To prevent such ele ation of the die holder, and thereby force the die character into the plate ,l the top plates 76 of the frames 17 are constructed to have a rolling engagement with the uppermost portions of the collars 244. The lower face 8.; of each plate 76 will be given an oscillating movement by reason of the frame swinging on the fulcrum piece 79 below the table. This lower face is so curved that during the rolling or cycloidal movement of the collars 84:, such face will always engage the collars at the upper extremity of a vertical diameter of the collar; which will obviously result in the cross pieces 76, when properly adjusted relative to the fulcrum piece 79, to press the collar portions, and therefore the dies vertically down 'ard, and force the characters on the dies into the plate to be engraved. But since the character on the die is colimaratively small, the die holder will need to be oscillated through a very small angular distance in order to cause the character to be sunk into the plate. 'll1erefore,the portion. of the engaging face Sh that causes the die holder to be forced downward, need have such pressing engagement with the collar 84 during 'a comparatively short len th. From this it will be seen that there will be a true rolling engagement between. the cross pieces 76 and the die holder, instead of a sliding frictional engagement. T he curved face as may be continued in order that the die holder can swing upward througl about 90 degrees for the purpose of fzui ilitating insertion and removal of the dies; which position is indicated in broken lines at the left side in l ig. 7. in this figure the position indicated in heavy broken lines at the right, shows approximately the a mount of movement necessary from the central or intermediate position. to insure effective opcration.
In order to prevent any slip in the rolling engagement of the collars G4. with the cross pieces 76, a rack 90 is secured to each cross piece 76, to engage the gear wheel 85, secured on the hub of the die holder. This rack 90 will have its pitch line approximately alining with the bearing face as since the pitch lines of the gears coincide with. the 'peripiuu'y of the collars 1 lit will lte seen that the gear and rack will also have a rolling engz'zgement instead of a sliding frictional contact. Means may also be provided for causing a true rolling or cycloidal movement of the die holder over the table and plate 1, by providing a rack 91 secured to the frame or table on each side, in position to have its pitch line coincide with that of the gear 85, with which it engages.
Adjustment provided for lost motion caused by wear of the lower rack 9]v comprising a movable half section 9'2 that is shiftalzle endwise by means of a screw 93, in orderto reduce the space between adjacent teeth.
The cross piece 76 can be adjusted relative to the collars 84 to compensate for wear, by screwing the tie rods 78 up or down. The tie rods being locked in the cross piece 77 that is split transversely by clamp bolts 94.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The dies D are inserted in the die holder 16 and clampe therein by the handle 69, and also by screwing up the arm 7 5. The dies are all constructed of uniform length, which is such that the base of each die will operate in the plane of the two bearing surfaces 86. The plate P to be engraved is placed on top of the upper block 20 and its edge is brought against the shoulder 47 in each block 46, and clamped thereto by the lever 48. The block 20 is then adjusted by means of the hand wheel 27 until the upper face of the .plate lies in the plane of the rolling blocks 86, which will coinc de with the shoulder 47. Thereupon, the die holder is rocked back and forth one or more times as required to give the proper impression, which can be done by means of the handle portion 87 of the member. If found. desirable, the block 20 may be lowered slightly so that the first impression will not be full but extend part way into the plate. Then the block 20 can be raised so that the full impression of the dies will be effected. The plate is adjusteil across uniler the dies by means of the hand wheel 41 to bring the first line in the proper position on the plate. And then each succeeding line can be accurately determined by giving the proper number of rotations and fractions thereof of the hand wheel 41, it being known the exact 51 stance the plate will be atlvancerl by each revolution of the wheel ll, as indicated by its pointer 45. In a similar manner the pointer 31 indicates the amount the plate P is elevated or depressed by the hand wheel 27.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry a die, and a member supported to oscillate and having a rolling engagement with the die member and arranged to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die men'iber is swung relative to the t e.
In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member rranged to carry a die and having a curved bearing surface, and a member provided with a curved bearing surface having a rolling en gagement with the curved surface of the die member to thereby cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is swung relative to the table, and to press the die against the blank during such movement.
3. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry a die, an operating member arranged to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is swung relative to the table, a rack car ried by the operating member, and a toothed element fast on the die member and engaging the rack to prevent slip between the die member and operating member during the rolling movement.
4. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank. a member arranged to carry a die, an operating member arranged to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is swung relative to the table, said operating member being also arranged topress the die against the blank during such movement, a rack carried by the operating member and a toothed element fast on the die member and engaging the rack to prevent slip between the die member and operating member during the rolling movement.
5. In a rolling press, the combination ofa table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry a die, and a member supported to oscillate and having a rolling en gagement with the die member and arranged to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is swung relative to the table, said member being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement.
6. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry a die, a member supported to oscillate and having a rolling engagement with the die member and arranged to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is swung relative to the table, said member being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement, and means for preventing slip between the table and die member during said movement.
7. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry a die, a member having a rolling engagement with the die member and arranged to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is swung relative to the table, the rolling member being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement, a rack on the pressing member, a toothed element on the working member engaging the rack to prevent slip between the pressing means and the die member.
8. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry a die, a member having a rolling engagement with the die member and arranged to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is swung relative to the table, said rolling member being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement, means for preventing slip between the pressing means and the die member, and means for preventing slip between the die member and the blank.
9. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry a die, a member having a rolling engagement with the die member and arranged to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is swung relative to the table, the rolling member being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement, a rack on the pressing member, a gear on the die member engaging the rack to prevent slip between the pressing means and the die member, and a rack on the table engaging said gear to prevent slip between the die and the blank.
10. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank and provided with a plane bearing surface, a member arranged to carry a die and provided with curved bearing surfaces on opposite sides, one being arranged to engage said plane surface of the table to cause the die to have a rolling engagement with the blank When the die member is swung relative to the table, and a member provided with a curved bearing surface arranged to engage the other curved surface of the die member to have a rolling engagement therewith and thereby roll the die member over the blank, and also to press the die against the blank during said movement.
11. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank and provided with a plane bearing surface, a member arrangedto carry a die and provided with a cylindrical bearing surface arranged to engage said plane surface of the table to cause the die to have a rolling engagement with the blank when the die member is swung relative to the table, and a member provided with a curved bearing surface arranged to have a rolling engagement with the cylindrical surface of the die member at a portion located diametrically opposite the die to thereby roll the die member over the blank, and also to press the die against the blank during said movement.
12.111 a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank and provided with a plane bearing surface, a member arranged to carry a die and provided with a cylindrical bearing surface engaging the plane surface of the table to cause the die to roll over the blank, and a member provided with a curved bearing surface in rolling engagement with the cylindrical surface of the die member and contacting therewith at the extremities of consecutive vertical diameters of the cylindrical portion during a part of the rolling movement of the die member.
13. In a rolling press, the combination of a able arranged to support a blank thereon, at member arranged to carry a die, a swinging frame having a rolling engagement with the die member to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the frame is swung, said frame being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement.
14. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank thereon, a member arranged to carry a die, a frame pivoted below the table and having a rolling engagement with the die member above the table to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the frame is rocked, the frame being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement.
15. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry a die and having a curved bearing surface, a frame pivoted below the table and provided with a curved bearing surface above the table having a rolling cngagement with the curved surface of the die member to thereby cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the frame is rocked, and also to press the die against the blank during such movement.
16. In a rolling press the combination of a table arranged to support a blank thereon, a member arranged to carry a die, a frame pivoted below the table and having a face arranged to engage a face of the working member on the opposite side from the die face to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the frame is swung, and also arranged to press the die in the die member against the blank, a rack carried by the frame, and a gear portion on the die member engaging said rack to prevent slip between the frame and die member.
17. In a rolling press the combination of a table arranged to support a blank thereon, a member arranged to carry a die, a frame pivoted above the table and having a face arranged to engage a face of the working member on the opposite side from the die face, to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the frame is swung, and also arranged to press the die in the die member against the blank, a rack carried by the frame, a gear carried by the die member in engagement with said rack, and a rack carricd by the table engaging said gear.
18. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank and provided with a plane bearing surface, a mem ber arranged to carry a die and provided with a cylindrical bearing surface engaging the plane surface of the table to cause the die to roll over the blank, and a frame pivoted below the table and provided with a curved bearing surface in engagement with the cylindrical surface of the die member and contacting therewith at the extremities of vertical diameters of the cylindrical portion during a portion of the rolling movement of the die member.
19. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, and provided with a plane bearing surface, a member arranged to carry a die and provided with curved bearing surfaces, one engaging the plane surface of the table to cause the die to roll over the blank, and a frame pivoted below the table and provided with a curved bearing surface in engagement with the other curved surface of the die member to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the frame is swung, the frame being arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement.
, 20. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank and provided with a plane bearing surface, a member arranged to carry a die and provided with a cylindrical bearing surface engaging the plane surface of the table to cause the die to roll over the blank, and a frame pivoted below the table and provided with a curved bearing surface in engagement with the cylindrical surface of the die member to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the 7 blank when the frame is rocked, the frame being arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement.
21. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry one or more dies, and a pair of swinging frames having a rolling engagement with the die member on opposite sides of the die engaging portion to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the frames are swung, the frames being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement.
2 In a'rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank thereon, a member arranged to carry one or more dies, a pair of frames having a rolling engagement with the die member on opposite sides of its die engaging portion and pivoted below the table, to thereby cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is rocked, the frame being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement.
23. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry one or more dies and pro vided with two curved bearing surfaces, a pair of frames pivoted below the table and each provided with a curved bearing surface having a rolling engagement with the said curved surfaces respectively of the die member to thereby cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is rocked, and also to press the die against the blank during such movement.
24. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry one or more dies, and a pair of swinging frames having a rolling en gagement with the die member on opposite sides of the die engaging portion to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the frames are swung, the frames being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement, and means for preventing slip between the frames and the die memcer during the rolling movement.
25. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank, a member arranged to carry one or more dies, and pair of swinging frames having a rolling engagement with the die member on opposite sides of the die engaging portion to cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the frames are swung, the frames being also arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement. a rack carried by each frame adjacent the portion engaging the die holder, and a gear element on the die holder arranged to engage each said rack and prevent slip between the frames and the die holder during the rolling movement. 26. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank and provided with two plane bearing surfaces, a member arranged to carry a die and provided with acylindrical bearing surface at two portions on opposite sides of the die, the latter surfaces engaging the plane surfaces of the table respectively to cause the die to roll over the blank, and a pair of frames pivoted below the table and each provided with a curved bearing surface in engagement with one of the cylindrical surfaces of the die member to thereby cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is rocked, the frames being arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement.
27. In a rolling press, the combination of a table arranged to support a blank and provided with two plane bearing surfaces, a member arranged to carry a die and provided with a cylindrical bearing surface at two portions on opposite sides of the die, the latter surfaces engaging the plane surfaces of the table respectively to cause the die to roll over the blank, a pair of frames pivoted below the table and each provided with a curved bearing surface in. engagement with one of the cy lindrical surfaces of the die member to thereby cause the die to have a rolling movement over the blank when the die member is rocked, the frames being arranged to press the die against the blank during such movement, a gear wheel secured to each said cylindrical member of the die member, a rack on the table on each side in engagement with the gear wheels respectively, and a rack secured to each frame in engagement witl1 the adjacent gear wheel.
28. The combination with the frame Oi. means for adj ustably supporting the engraving plate, comprising a block having a series of inclined faces on its upper edge, the block resting on an upper face of the frame and slidable thereon, a screw rod engaging a threaded bore in the block, means for preventing end wise movement of the rod in the frame whereby its rotation will reciprocate the block, a second block having a pair of similar inclined faces engaging the inclined faces of said block, the second block being prevented from end wise movement whereby the shifting of the said block by the screw rod will elevate and depress the second block, a wheel fast on the screw rod and provided with graduations on its periphery, and a pointer on the frame arranged to register with the graduations to indicate the adjustment of the second block.
29. The combination with the frame of means for adjustably supporting the engraving plate, comprising a. block having a series of inclined faces on its upper edge, the block resting on .an upper face of the frame and slidable' thereon, a screw rod engaging a threaded bore in the block, means for preventing end wise movement of the rod in the frame whereby its rotation will reciprocate the block, a second block having a pair of similar inclined faces engaging the inclined faces of said block, the second. block beirg prevented from end wise movement whereby the shifting of the said block by the screw rod will elevate and depress the second block, and a spring member arranged to press said two blocks together.
30. The combination with a frame and a supporting surface for a plate to be engraved, of a block slidable horizontally in guide ways in the frame, clamping means carried by the block for ei'igaging the plate along one of its edges, means for sliding the block in said guide ways, and means for indicating the amount of such movement.
31. The combination with a frame and a supporting surface for the plate to be e":- graved, of a block slidable horizontally in guide ways in the frame, a plm ality of clampin means carried by the bloc li for engaging the plate along one of its edges, means for securing the clamping means in adjusted positions along the block, and means for adjusting the block in. said guide ways.
32. In a rolling press, the combination with a frame, rd means for supporting the engraving plate or. the frame, of arms havirtg guide ways, a block slidable horizontally in the guide ways, clamping means on said block, a screw rod rotatable in the block, and
engaging a threaded bore in. the frame to move said block back and forth, a wheel secured on the screw rod and provided with graduations on its periphery, and an indicator on. the block arraiiged to register with such graduatiors to indicate the movement of the wheel a; .d block.

In a rolling press, the combination with a frame arranged to support an engraving plate, of a die holder having a rolling movement over the plate, and. means for securing a series of dies in the die holder, comprising a platemovable to and from a recessed portion of the holder, arms fast on said plate, and eccentrics arranged between the said arms and the holder to rock the arms and move the plate to clamp the dies in the holder.
37. in a rolling press, the combination with a frame for supporting a plate, and a die holder movable over the plate, of means for holding a series of dies in the die holder,
the holder body having a rabheted portion,
a clamping plate arranged to swing adj acent said raoheted portion to clamp a series 01'' dies there between, arms secured to the clamping plate, a shaft having eccentrics thereon arranged to swing between the holder body and end portions of said arms, whereby to clamp the dies, and an operating arm of the eccentric shaft.

In a rolling press, the combination with a frame arranged to support a plate, of a die holder having a rolling movement over the plate, a clamping plate movable on the die holder, means for swinging the plate to clamp a series of dies in the die holder, an abutment on said plate arranged to engage an end. die of the series, an abutment 0n the die holder arranged to engage the die at the other end of the series, and means for moving the clamping plate endWise to clamp the dies between said two abutments.
