NETE STAE LUDWIG Lirriii, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
RAILWAY APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed February 4, 1907. Serial N0. 355,6 26- To all 'wh/07M, t 11i/wy concern.-
Be it known that I, LUDWIG LIPTAI, a subject of the King of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county Of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Appliances, Of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to railway appliances and its Object is to deviate the impact of a collision from a rectangular direction to one Of an acute angle, so that the danger Of destruction to railroad stock and to life Of the passengers is considerably diminished.
The drawings illustrate in Figure 1 a side elevation Of the end of a car, in Fig. 2 a horizontal cross-section of the same, in Fig. 3 a top view Of the other end of the car, in Fig. 4 an end view of the same, in Fig. 5 a detail of construction, and in Fig. 6 a diagram of a number of cars.
The body Of the car is indicated at 1, and the usual platforms 2 are Organized-to carry an inclined frame 3, having supporting beams 4, slidable in brackets 5 of the platform. Between the frame and the platform are springs 6 for taking up part of the impact of concussion. It will be seen that the platform, as well as the frame 3, are at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the car. The frame 3 is provided with a number of rollers 7, preferably cone-shaped, and made of lengthwise corrugated material. The rollers are supported in the frame by means of Ournals 8, and each roller carries an arm 9, capable of acting upon a crank 10, Or similar device, supported in a bearing 11 Of the truck, the other end of the crank or shaft being formed according to the result to be accomplished by operating it, for instance as the movable part of an electric contact. The purpose Of this device is to disconnect, whenever rotation is im arted to either of the rollers 7, mechanica devices, such as brakes or valves, or electrical devices, such as contacts, so that the power is shut olf Of the train and the brakes applied to the wheels.
cated at the frontand rear-end of each train,
and in case of collision between two trains, running On the s ame track, the frames will obviously be the first members to meet, and one of the saine glides up unto the other, causing, by contact with the rollers of the other train, rotation Of its own rollers aswell as of the rollers of the other train. The levers on the rollers will coact with the devices controlling the power and the brakes of the train, and by shutting Off the power and applying thebrakes, the cars or the trains are brought tO standstill.
It is obvious that a collision at right angles to the front or rear end of the car of a train will cause the utmost destruction. rI`he invention illustrated in Fig. 6, showing lthe front and rear ends of the cars formed at an angle diiierent from a right angle to the axis Of a train, causes, in case Of a collision, a gliding Off of the individual cars, and the diminution of the imp act, which is facilitated by a frame 16 On each end Of the cars, provided with a series Of vertical rollers 17, which may be used for similar purposes as the rollers 7. i
As new and useful is claimed and desired tO be secured by Letters Patent of the United States 1.. In a railway appliance, the combination with a car having powerand brake-controlling devices and its ends formed at angles different from right angles to the axis of the car, of a frame at each end Of the car, a plurality Of rollers in said frame, and means controlled by said rollers and adapted to Operate said powerand brake-controlling devices.
2. In a railway appliance, the combination with a car having its ends formed at an angle different from right angles tO the axis of the car, a frame at each end of the car, a plurality of rollers in said frame and adapted to coact with the corresponding rollers of an adjoining car.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this second The modification, illustrated in Fig. 5, i day Of February, A. D. 1907.
comprises a shield 13, slidably fastened to the frame 3 by means of a bar 14 and controlled by springs 15, located between the end of the frame and the shield.
