l'Be it known 4that I, CHARLES J.`HARK1Ns,
a-eitizen ofthe UnitedStates, residing at Bufale, in the county of Erie and State of Im reve ent in Gage-Cocks, of which the v vThis invention relates to gage cocks which testing them as tothe level of the Water in the same. f
' Heretofore gage cocks have usually been so constructedv that when they became leaky the boiler had to be shutdown in order to gage cock which often was attended with considerable inconvenience and loss oi time work in which the The'object of this invention is to provide a gage4 cock in which a leali may be stopped without necessitating shutting down oi the boiler and which can be interclianged to permitre air or replacement ofthe worn parts 'to bede erred until such a time as will be more convenient. l
In the .accompanying drawings: Figure l is a longitudinal section of one form of my improved gage cock. Figs. 2 and 3 are cross sections thereofin the correspondingly nuinbered lines in Fig. l. Fig. 4` is a detached sectional view of a modified construction of the reversible rear casing section of my iin.w proved gage cock and the parts connected theiewith.y v V l Similar, letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
yThe gage cock shown in Figs. 1-3 and ein-A bodying my invention has a tubular or hollow body or casing composed essentially of a C.v I The front section may be provided at its front endwlth an external screw thread a, as
same in an opening of the boiler. The rear section B is reversible and may be `:onnected at opposite ends. with. thc opposing ends ol the front section and the bonnet by moans from. eachother. rl`he means ior this purpose shown in the drawings, as an example, consists in providing -opposite ends of tlf.; rf; er section with external screw threads which er gagewith internally tlneaded sockets' a?, l) l formed, respectively, at the rear end of the front body section and the front end of the bonnet. The front section 'of the body is provided centrally with a main longitudinalY bore d of comparatively small diameter and at its front end with a bore D of larger diame' ter forming a valve chamber. A valve seat e is formed on this section at the junction of its front and central bores which tapers rearwardly.
. F represents a check valve arranged in the chamber D of the front body section and having a rearwardly taperingface which is adapted to' engage with the valve seat of said body section.' This valve is provided with rearwardly-projecting stem f of angular'or iiatsided cross section which is arranged in the mainA bore of the front body section and terminates at its outer or rear end short of the outer end of said main bore.
the valve chamber D by any suitable means but preferably by a cross pin g secured to the front body section in iront of the cheek valve, as shown in Fig. 1..
The outer end of the bonnet is provided K The checkvalve may be prevented from escaping 'liroinv with an internally screw threaded opening which receives a valve shifting spindle H having an external screw thread which Works in said opening of the bonnet and a handle, wheel or. knob l1, at its rear end whereby the samem ay be turned. The rear end of this valve spindle is ingor socket fi. Y l
'.lhe centralpoi'tion of 4the rearbody section is providedwith a lateral outlet in which a discharge nozzle J is secured and at opposite ends of this section the saine is provided with. heads K, K having axial openings or ports le, wbereby the interior or main valve provided with an axial `openchamber l1 of this section is connected respec'tively with the interior of the front body section andthe bonnet. At the' inner ends ol' the port openings Ligt@ the rear body section is provided with valve seats Z,"Z which `preferably areof conical form and taper outwardly ln opposite directions from the interior ol' this section.
)d represents 'the enlarged central part of a reversible valve stem and'm, m its two reduced shanks arranged at opposite ends ofI thc central part. 'l`he central part M of this stem is arranged within the main valve chamber, its front shank m projects through the front port lr into engagement with the rear end oi the stein of the check valve and TOO ITO
