Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. April 23, 1907.
Application filed March 3, 1906. Serial No. 304,105.
To (LZZ w/wne it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM J. ARCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brighton township, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention refers to improvements in filters, more particularly filters for domestic use and is designed. for the purpose of providing a device of this character which will be simple and cheap in construction, efficient in operation, capable of being readily taken apart and cleansed or re-assembled, of economical manufacture, and providing facility for inspection of the interior at all times.
The invention comprises generally a middle frame adapted to receive and support a filtering stone or material at its middle transverse portion, adjacent removable cylinders of glass or other suitable material, a surrounding frame, with packing devices and mechanism for clamping the parts tightly together; also a rotating cleaning, scraper; means for introducing the supply water; means for drawing off the scouring or cleaning water and sediment, and means for withdrawing the filtered water, as shall be more fully hereinafter described.
Referring now to the drawings; Figure 1. is a view in front elevation of my improved sectional view thereof on the line II. II. of separable water filter. Fig. 2. is a vertical Fig. 1. Fig. 3. is across sectional view on the line III. III. of Fig. 1.
2 represents a middle stone bearing body portion of the filter which may be cast metal or other suitable material having at its middle interior portion a seat 3, preferably tapered, for receiving and holding the filtering stone or material 4. This stone, which may be Tripoli stone, is merely set in the tapered seat by making a tight grinding fit therewith without the use of any holding cement or other means, or it may, if preferred, be setinto the receiving seat without any preliminary finishing, using an intervening body of cement or other plastic material capable of hardening.
Tapped into one side of the stone holding portion 2 is the withdrawal faucet 5 for carrying oil' the dirty Water and accumulated impurities from above the filtering stone, and stone being cut down at one edge or perforated from the top outwardly to the side as indicated at 6 to provide an aperture registering with the faucet.
7 and 8 are water enclosing shells, preferably formed of heavy glass cylinders seating against the upper and lower faces of the stone bearing body portion 2 with intervening packing gaskets 9 of rubber or other suitable material, which cylinders are tightly clamped against these bearings by means of the surrounding yoke 10. Said yoke bears upwardly against the bottom portion of lower cylinder 8 as clearly shown, with an intervening packing gasket 11. An outlet nipple 12 is passed through the bottom portion of the yoke, extending upwardly into the interior of the lower cylinder 8, with the bottom portion of which it makes a water-tight joint by means of an intervening gasket 13, it being understood that a suitable opening is provided in the bottom of cylinder 8 downwardly through which the nipple 12 extends. 14 is a withdrawal faucet for the filtered water connected with nipple 12 in any suitable manner as by means of an intervening elbow 15.
16 is a water inlet nipple threaded. around its exterior as clearly shown, tapped through the upper internally threaded terminal 17 of yoke 10 and bearing downwardly against the upper end of cylinder 7 by means of an inter vening washer 18 and. packing gasket 19, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The nipple 16 is provided with a nut extremity 20, and it will thus be seen that by turning said nipple the entire apparatus may be tightly clamped together so as to make a fluid-tight construction throughout.
Connected with the upper portion of nipple 16 by hollow pipe fittings or other mechanism of any suitable construction, is the inlet faucet or cock 21 controlling the supply of water to the filter from pipe 22, al though ordinarily this faucet may be kept open to utilize the water pressure at all times except when it is desired to take the apparatus apart. The upwardly extending fittings or connections between the nipple 16 and inlet faucet 21 may be of the construction shown, or may, if preferred, be a single integral cast section; and with either construction is provided at its upper portion a stuffing box 23 providing for insertion of a rotatable scraping shaft 24. This shaft is provided at its upper portion with a handle 25 and scraping blades 26 or other suitable devices at the lower end whereby the upper surface of the filtering stone may be cleansed from impurities or sediment deposited from the Water.
As shown, the embracing yoke 10 isengaged by projecting guides 27 extending from the middle section 2 whereby these ports are maintained in alinement.
When assembled in this manner the entire apparatus is very compact, provides for all of the various functions necessary or desirable in a device of this character, while the interior of the filter may be viewed through the glass cylinders at all times. This latter feature of the device is an important and valuable one, as it permits of observation of the internal condition without the necessity of first taking the apparatus apart.
A further feature of advantage is that the glass cylinders avoid the necessity of internal finishing while they protect the metallic parts from corrosion and are readily and easily cleansed.
The apparatus may be of various sizes, forms or design; it is very efficient in opera tion, simple and economical in construction and not liable to get out of order, and is well adapted to the objects in view. It may be changed or varied by the skilled mechanic in various details of construction, within the scope of the following claims.
