lEtlZ Cit-i GUT-titty? Patented. April 28, 190?.
Application filed m 28,1903. Serial No. 319,077.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, liner-man l3. BU- CIIANAN, of vVohurn, county of Mid-disses, State of Massachusetts, have invent ,d an Improvement in Electric Fuses or Cut-Outs, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is s specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts;
This invention relates to electric fuses or cut-outs having fuse-indicators, and for its object to provide improved means for 6 ereting the fusedndicetor when the fuse-Wire ruptures:
Figure 1 shows in side elevation an electric fuse or cut-out embodying this invention. F lg. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail showing one end of the fuse or cut-out, the iuscindh cater and means for operating it. l 3 is a sectional detail, similar to Fig. 2, showing the fuse-wire as riwture'd and the fuse-indicator in the act cl being ejected. Fig. 4 s sectional detail of the support for the actuatingspring i'or'the use-indicator. Fig. 5 is e r tional detail showing modified inesns n connecting the actuating spring for the l LlSP/ lildicator with the fuse-Wire. Fig. (i is 2. detail of the actuating spring shown in l i a represents the shell or case of the electric fuse or cut-out, which is herein shown as eve lindrical, but it may be of any other desirable form. t, I) represent the end caps of seid shell or case, a the main fuse-wire, and a the shunt fuse-Wire, both of which are contained in said shell or case, and are herein connected to the end caps. "i nis form of electric fuse or cut-out shown merel vior'the sake of illustrw 5 my invention, as I desire it to he 11nd: stood that my invention me T he applied other or forms of inclosed filled electric loses or cut-outs.
The fuse-indicator herein shown consists of a small circular disk 0, cl leather or other material, placed in an aperture formed in the Well of the shell or case a, at any dcr' ihle part thereof, and for the purpose oi inmcating when the fuse-wire ruptures, said disk is ejected.
As my invention particularly resides the means for operating the fuse indicator, do not desire/to limit it to the construction or form of the fuse-indicator which is employed.
t I The forrn herein shown, however, is simple,
cheepto manufacture and easily discernible.
n spring f is employed the actuator for the filSGdllCllOltOl', and this spring is located beneath the fuse-indicator e, and is herein shown as made helical, and in Figs. 2', 3 and 4, as having at its upper or outer end an eye f through which the fuse-Wire (Z passes, and in. Figs. 5 and 6 as having its upper or outer end extended down through the center of the spring and connected with the fuse-Wire c. The spring may be connected with either the shunt fuse-Wire or main l'usewire. A support is provided for the spring f, which, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and l, consists of a cap 9 adapted to be placed in the aperture in the shell or case, the flanged head or end of Winch is located upon the inside of the shell or case. The spring, is contained in said cap and is supported upon the inside of the head or end thereof. .-.hc cap is made shallow, its length approximately equalling the thickness of the Well oi the shell or case, and the fuse-ind cator c is so proportioned that the sot/eatingspringf, when compressed, will occupy e. position directly beneath it, so that when said spring; is released and permitted to resume is normal condition the indicator Q will he engaged and ejected. [is the esp 9 herein shown approximately equals the thickness oi the Well of the shell or case, the disk (1 will he made to snugly iit it so as to he confined or held in place by it, that is to say, by frictional engagement one with the other.
[is show-n in .lligs. 2, 3 and e, the Walls of the cop g perforated to provide for the passage through it die-metric lly of the fuse Wire, and the actuating-spring, which is contained in these-p is con'ipress-zed and the Wire through the eye which is formed on said spring, and thus acts to hold said spring compressed. when the "fuse-wire ruptures spring will he released and will immediately resume its normal condition, and the luseindicstor will he ejected. This cmistrnctien is prefe tor small fuses. For large a plate It is placed against the inside of the sneil or case, over the aperture, which as a support i or the spring, and
said. plate has sn'iall hole through it through Whiel'i the downwardly extended end of the actuating spring passes, and said end 1s connected to hisewire, so that the actuating wire.
spring will be held compressed by said fusel idien the fuse-wire ruptures the spring-will be released and permitted to resume its normal condition and the fuse-indicatorwill be ejected, as before described.
Having thus described my invention, what I as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. lnauelectric fuse or cut-out, a shell or case containing a fuse-wire, a fuse-indicator, and actuatingspring for said indicator which is located beneath but disconnected. the indicator, and which is connected e l h d compressed by said fuse wire,
, ly described. an electric fuse or cut-out, a shell or case containing a fuse-wire, fuse-indicator, means for holding it confined, and an actuating-spring for said indicator which is located beneath it, and which is formed. with an eye through which the fuse-wire passes, whereby said spring is connected with and held compressed by the fuse-wire, substantially as descrioed.
P. in an electric fuse or cut-out, a shell or case containing a fuse-wire and having an aperture, removable disk contained in said aperture, and a spring located beneath said disk but disconnected therefrom which is normally held compressed by the fuse-wire and which, when released by the fuse-wire rupturing, operates to eject the disk, substantially as described.
t. in an electric fuse or cutout, ashcll or case containing a fuse--wire, a fuse-indicator, actuating-spring for said indicator which is located beneath it and which is connected t 1 and held compressed by said fuse wire, L. cap containing said spring through anich the fuse-wire passes, substantially as described.
5. In an electric fuse or cut-out, a shell or case having an aperture, a fuse-wire contained in said shell or case, a cap placed in said aperture, an iinlicating-disk placed in said cap, a spring for ejecting said disk also placed in said cap beneath the disk, which is connected with and held compressed by the fuse-wire, substantially as described.
5. In an electric fuse or cut-out, a shell or case containing a fuse-wire, a helical spring connected with said fuse-wire and normally held compressed by it, and a fuse-indicator located adjaccmtsaid spring, which is engaged and operated by said spring when the latter is released, and means, independent of the spring for holding the indicator confined substantially as described 7. in an electric fuse or cut-out, a shell or case containing afusc-wire, a helical spring havii'ig an eye at one end through which said fuse-wire passes, and a support for said spring upon which it is held compressed by said fuse-wire, substantially as described.
