Description

tiiiitiiil Sm-tiri @met @ffm/f WILLIAM nl., MA nLEY, orV NEW' YORK, N. Y. Letters .Patent No. 85,115, dated Dwmber 22, 1868,
nnnovn'nmm nt rmownocxs.
T he Schedule referred to in tune Letterlrjltent and making put ofthe me.
To -all whom it may concern Be it known'tlizit I, WLLLTAM R. rIVIANIIEY, of the city, comit-y, and Starte of New certain new and useful Improvement-s in Pillowflocks for the shafts of the puddles of foatheriiig-puddlewheels tor steaiiiers, zuid for other purposes to which 4it may be applicable; und that the following is :i full,
clear, and exact description and specific-ation of n iy said invention. x
Tle object ot' my improvements is primarily to onable the pillow block or boxfhearhig of theyshaitt of n feathi:ring-paddle-lniard, or of zisiinilar slnift or gudgeou, to be securely-.coliiiectcd with the :irni of the pmhlle-wlieel, or with :i siinilar'er'in oi ber.
The objectofthe second part of my invention is to relieve the cap of the pillow-block and the. cap-bolts of lateral strains, although the cavity in whichthe lining or brass is inserted, is eylindrioal.- lo this end,
My invention consists, first, in constructing thestock of the pillow in two parts, euch' having a check-plate, so that these cheek-plates cnn he applied to the opposite sides of the arm, and cam lie secured to each other, and to the arni between them, bythroughfboltsoriivets passing through both cheek-plates, and through the portion ofthe :i1-ni between them, so esto draw the two parts of the stock closely against the said arm.
The sec-ond part of my invention vconsists in coristr'ucting the stock of thu-pillow-block with a cylindrical bore or cavity for the lining, extending around more than half the box or lining, upon which the shaft revolves, :nid with the orificeof said cavity about the diameter' of the sliaitto which the pillow-block is fitted.
In order that my invention may be fully undeistinid,
l will proceed to describe the pillow-block of one of the puddle-shells of :i featlieriiig-paddle-wheeliuwhich both parts of my invention are embodied.
lfigure l. of the' awonrpanyiiig drawings represents :i side view of said pillow-block, with portions removed, :uid ofa portion of the arm of the wheel, and
Figure 2 represents :i plan ofthe samiwitli -hali of the cap of thei'iillow-lilock removed. i
ln this example the stock of the pillow-block is constructed of two side pieces,A and A', eachof which is formed iii-one piece with a check-plate, @that enibmices oneV side ofthe arm C, to which the pillow-block issecur'ed.
The two cheekplates b b are perfoiutrd with holes for thebolts i: e, by which thcv are secured to euch other, and to the arm C lwtwcen them. Correspondinghokss also :ire formed iii the arm C foi' the passage ol' theholts.
When the two side pieces ero applied to. theel-ni, :nid their chock-plates :irc bolted together', stares m, oi' wood, arc driven through both side pieces of the stock ofthe pillow-block, to forni a lining for tlic shait to tui-ii in, and the stock thus formed'is surmountod by the rnpfl), which also, inthe exampleI represented, A
is lined with wood, in', und is secured iii place by four vsp-bolts, e.
The stock arid ,oep are bored out to receive the 1iniiig oi' luixJn-m', iii which ihr shall revolves; :ind in York, have invented,
order that the second partof rny invention may be en'ibodied in the pillow-block, the stock's so high that the cylindrical cavity, produced by boring, ex-
tends from r to i, by wayof s, around nearly two'- thirds the circuihierom-eht the shaft-opening E in the liiiiiig,.so that the month of this cavity from fr, directly across to i", is but little larger than the diameter of the shaft.. I
By this construction, the advantages due to a. bored cylindrical seat for .the liningare secured., while, at the saine time, the sides of the cavity extend above the diametric line t t, and sustain the lateral strains of the shaft, thereby relieving' the rap and cap-bolts of such strains.
The first part of'niy invention may be used witlmut` the second, by-coustrueting the parts of the pillowblock as represented at Figures 3 and 4, where theA 'cap l) covers half the slialtfcavity, :niddivides the lateral strains with tliestock.
The stock of the pillow-block in this exemple is coustructed, asbefore described, of two parts A A', with eheekqilates bb. I
In both examples thus described, the pillow-block is' formed substantially of three pieces', viz, the two side pieces A :uid A' and the cap D,
The first part of any invention may, however, be einbodied, bycoiistructing the pillow-block of two partsl only, as represented at Figures 5 and 6. I
In this cese, each side' piece, A, is constructed so as to for'in ahalf cap for the shaft as well half the stockv ofthe pillow-block, and the lnii'ig-staves fm, may be driven eridwise lthrough both side pieces after they are secured-to the arm, the shaft being afterwards introduced endwise through the hole or shaft-opening E. The above-'described inode of constructing the stock of the pillow-block in parts, with cheek-pieces, not culv ailiirds great facility for securely connecting it with the arrn ofthe wheel', but also enables it to be constructed of wrought-iron, because the parts of the pillow-block are of suoli shape that they can be readily forged in dies to the desired forni. Having thus described the' several modes in which I have contemplated the application of the principle of my invention, IWhat I olaiin vas my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction oftlie'stock of a pillow-block,A
with side pieces provided with 'cheek-plates, substantially as before described.
Also, the construction of the stock of the pillowblock with a cylindrical cavity for the lining, embracing morethan half the shaft, land with a mouth large enough to admit the szr'rd shaft, substantially as before
