Beit known that I, Gnonen N.I1INCHMAN, acitizen of the ,United States, residing at Webster Groves, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and j useful At'ldingdiachine, of which thefollowing' issuch a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
. My inventionrelates to an adding machine, and more particularly to that class of adding machines'in which the individual items, as well as the totals, are printed upon a strip or sheet of paper.
The object of my invention is to provide scribed a symbol or character has been printed adjacent to each total to distinguish the total from the items. According to my invention, however, I print adjacent to each item a symbol or character preferably polygonal in form,whereby the items and totals aredistinguished and at the same time means is providedfor facilitating the checking of the items. 7 are the addingwheels mounted upon a shaft 8 provided with a comb 9. Below the adding wheel shaft 8 is a shaft 10, upon which are mounted idle wheels 11 which are adapted to mesh with the adding wheels 7. Meshing with the idle wheels 11 are intermediate wheels 12 mounted upon a shaft 13 provided with a comb 14,5513 shown in Fig. 2. The intermediate wheels 12 are driven by means of an axially movable wheel 15 moving upon an axle 16. The intermediate wheels 12 mesh with printing wheels 17 mounted upon a shaft 18. The adding wheel 7, idle wheels 11, intermediate wheels 12, driving wheel 15 and printing wheels 17 are indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The peration of these wheels in adding numbers is identically the same as in my prior applications above referred to. The adding wheels 7 are normally out of mesh with the-idle wheels 1.1 so that when the individual items are placed in the machine bythe operation of the keys, the printing wheels 17 will be positioned from the driving wheel 15 through the intermediate wheels 12 without in any way allecting the adding wheels 7. and, consequently, move the type 40 -down-' wardly so as to be out of the path of the printing hammer 22.- When moved in this position the pawl 41 will engage with the notch 45 in the disk 39 so as tohold the type i 40 out of printing positionuntil the various wheels are returned to their normal position,- when the 0111i?- 14 in the shaft 13 will engage with a pin 46 on the disk as, so as to return the type it) to its normal or printing posi- ,tion. The pin 46 pIOjOLtS at both sides of the disk 36 and is adapted to come in rontart with the comb 47 which forms the'stop for the intermediate wheels 12.
