Description

s? o 3 a Wimp/d v VD" GEORGE WELLQS, or os K LoosA, IO A,
.Ltters PatentNo. 85,043, dated December 15, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN. mamas FOR enem-sm m'roas.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of-lzhe lame.
', To all whom it may concern .Be it linown that I, Gnoner i A. WELLS, of Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska, and State of Iowa, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Riddles for Grain- Separators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, inwhich "Figure l is a plan view, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section.
The same letters, in both figures, are used to desig-.
nate the same parts.
My invention consists in constructingthe riddles of grain-separators froma single sheet of metal, swaged into the form set forth, and having 'ova'l perforations. The. riddles, as ordinarily constructed, where metal plates are used, have longitudinal ribs soldered to their upper face, forming channels through which the grain metal, which is formed, by swagi'ng, into the'for clearly shown in fig.- 2, in which the fiat bottoms of the longitudinal channels 'are shown-at A, andthe parallel ribs are shown at B. These ribs, being formed in the plate itself, give greater staunchness tothe riddle,
ancljcannpt, as in the case of those that are solde'rlsd on to the plate, be displaced.
The holes 0. are arranged in the bottom of the channels, as shown, and they are made elliptical, conform-..
ing to the shape, of the grains of wheat, which will therefore fall through them, while oats will be carried forward, and discharged, with. the other'refuse, r verthe end of the nddle. The holes are placedwith their longer axes transversely across the'channels.
. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
1. A riddle for'a grain-separator, formed name single sheet of metal, swagedinto fiat channels A, separated by parallel ribs B, substantially as set forth.
- 2, A riddle for a graimseparator, constructedwith r transverse elliptical openings 0, placed across the channels A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name .to
this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
