DANIEL F. GREASER `AND HARRISON H. GREASER, OF PITTSBURG,
' PENNSYLVANIA.
EMERGENCY-BRAKE Fon VEHICLES.
To wl 'lu/tom, it may concern:
lBe it known that we, DANIEL F. GREASER ,and HARRISON H. GREASER, citizens of the i the main object of' the invention is the pr'o.
' between the tread of vision of an emergency-brake in which a suit able form of brake-shoe or sled isv interposed the wheel and the roadbed when the. momentum of the vehicle is to be stopped in combination with` an improved mechanism for operating said shoe or sled, as will presently appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of an automobile or motorcar, with a portion thereof in sectibn to show the invention in the position it assumes-when out ofuse. Fig. 2 is an'enl'arged cross-sectional view taken on` line.2 2 of Fi 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. ig. 3 is a modified form, as applied to railroad-wheels; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the device, sholwing the shoe or sled in contact withthe rai Referring to the drawings, .the numeral 1 designates the floor of the body of the automobile, which is provided with the openings 2 and 3 therethrough. Secured upon the under surface of the -iioor and depending therefrom are journakbrackets 4 and 5, in which. is journaled a shaft 6, carrying the two chains 7 and 8, which are adapted to. be wound thereonto operate the shoes or sleds 9 and 10, pivotally secured by means of the right-angled arm 11 to the sleeves 12, a rod 13 bein i connected to one end of each sled and to t ie chains 7 and 8, whereby the shoes or sleds are moved so as to describe substantially an arc of a circle.
Pivotally connected to a plate 14 is anarm 15, 'whose reduced portion 16 fits' slidably within the sleeve `12 and is providedwith a pin 17, which passes through the o ening or slot 13 in said sleeve, so as to limit t e downward movement of the shoe or sled, a coiled spring 1.) being interposed upon the reduced priirtion 16, so as to normally hold vthe shoe downward Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 28, 1905. Serial No. 267,446. y
Patented April 16, 1907.
In order to quicken the downward movement of the shoe or sled, so that they will engage the periphery of the wheels 2() at their point of contact with the ground, we provide the spring 21, which engages a lever 22, carried upon the shaft 23, the other end of the spring being connected to a stationary bar 24, the spring exerting a tension downward. so as to reduce the proper eii'ect.
In or er to operate the devicedthat is, rotate the shaft 6 in either direction-we mount thereon a pinion 25, which is adapted to mesh with a pinion 26, carried upon the short shaft 27 and' journaled between a pair of brackets 28, the said short shaft also having mounted thereon a ratchet-wheel 29, which is adapted to be engaged bya pawlV or detent 30. In order to operate this pawl or de-4 tent so as to release .the ratchet and allow the shoes to be thrown into operation, we provide a link 31, a .bell-crank Ilever 32, pivoted in the floor of the automobile in the opening 3, and the connecting-rod 33, connected to the bell-crank lever 34, pivoted so as to opcrate .in the opening 2 in the floor ofthe automobile. lTo the other member of -this bellcrank lever 34 we connect a spring-actuated rod 35, which is operably connected to the steering-post 36 of the automobile, so as to be operated upon by a hand-"levell 37, pivoted near the top of the steer'ingpost and readily accessible by the operator of the automobile, aspring 38 being so mounted as toexert a tension as to hold the pawl or detent'in -en gagement with the ratchet-wheel.
In order to operate the shaft so as to wind the shoes or sleds in 'inoperable positionafter being in use, we provide a handle or lever-39, whichis provided with an oll'set 'end 40, carr incas ring-actuated awl or detent 4],by. 5 y n F h p y9 means o which the lever is rocked or oscillated so as to rotate the ratchet, and colise-l qently the shaft 6, so `as to wind the chains x 7 and 8 thereupon and raise the slices or sleds. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, this form of device is applied for use upon railway-cars, and in this instance We form the slices, instead of lat segmental pieces in the other views, with a shouldered tread 42 for engage-- ment with the rail 43 andwith a depression 44 inv its projecting llange 45, which is adapted to engage the periphery of the earwhe'el 46 and form a receptacle for the Ilange 47 thereof, the spring-actuated sliding rod 12 being pivotally secured at 48 to the pro ico i IIO lieeting llange 49, whieh is adapted to he exterior of the vnr-tthvel.
