UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER LAMOI-IE, OF RATIBOR, GERMANY.
AUTOMATIC COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 9, 1907.
To all whom, it TrtCI/Z/ concern:
Be it known that I, PETER LAMCHE, master joiner, a subject of the King of Prussia, and a resident of'Ratibor, a city of Silesia, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic couplings, and is illustrated in the annexed drawin s, in which Tigure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan.
Each wagon possesses a coupling-hook a and a coupling-eye b. The coupling-hook a is revoluble in vertical direction and con nected to the pivot c, which is mounted in the free end of the draw-rod c, projecting from each wagon, or two wagons, coming together, the hook slides with itsnose d up and to the coupling-eye,until it falls into the same. The eye 1) possesses a front bow-shaped part 6, the two shanks of which can slide in the housing of the eye I). The one of these shanks f is provided with athread and carries the wormwheel g. The worm en aging in the wormwheel 9 is mounted on the shaft 71,, on which at both sides the cranks Q1 are fixed. By rotatiiig the shaft h by means of the cranks a rotation of the worm-wheel g, carrying the threaded nut, is effected, and consequently the bow e of the coupling-eye b is drawn back and the coupling is tightened If it is not intended that two wagons on coming together should become coupled, the handlever Z is previously moved to the left, Fig. 1, into the dotted position. On the axle m of this lever Z the arm n is mounted, which is connected by a short chain 0 with the hook a.
By throwing over the lever Z into the dotted position the arm n is also brought into the dotted position, and consequently the hook a is raised, and issprevented from falling into the coupling-eye of the adjacent wagons. Consequently in this case a coupling of the wagon is not effected, but the same remain separate, one behind the other. On throwing the hand-lever Z over toward the left a resilient finger fixed on the same springs into a notch 19 in the side plate g. The device is so arranged that there is a lever l at each side of the wagon. When it is desired to uncouple two wagons, the coupling is first slackened by shifting forward the bow e by means of the parts i h g and the worm. The lever Z is then placed in the dotted position, and thereby by means of the arm n and the chain 0 the hook is lifted out of coupling-eye of the neighboring wagon.
Having thus put forth the object and features of this my invention, I declare that what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
1. An automatic coupling for railwaywagons comprising in combination, a hori zontal coupling-hook (1 adapted to move only upward, a pivot c, stationary relatively to the respective wagon on which pivot said hook is revolubly mounted, a coupling-eye, b, a nose d on said hook, having a slide-surface, adapted to slide up and to engage with the coupling-eye, means for tightening the coupling and means adapted to be operated by hand for preventing at will the automatic engagement of the coupling.
2. An automatic coupling for railwaywagons comprising in combination, a horizontal coupling-hook (1 adapted to move only upward, a pivot c stationary relatively to the respective wagon on which pivot said hook is revolubly mounted, an adjustable coupling-eye, having a bow 6 provided with two shanks, one of which is screwed, .a wormwheel having a threaded nut arranged on,the screwed shank, a worm engaging with said worm-wheel, means for operating said worm at will, a nose cl on the couplinghook, having a slide-surface adapted to slide up and to engage with the couplinge'ye, a handlever, an axle on which said hand-lever is mounted a lever-arm fixed on said axle and, means connecting said lever-arm with the coupling-hook, whereby when the handlever is operated the automatic engagement of the hook in the coupling-eye is prevented.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 13th day of May, 1904, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
