Specification of Letters Patent.

To a, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES KARPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at College Point, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Rotary Cutter for VVoodworking-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in rotary cutters for woodworking-machines.
The object of the present inventionis to improve the construction of rotary cutters for molding and other woodworking machines and to provide a simple and inexpensive one having a plurality of cutters or tools capable of ready adjustment and adapted to be readily renewed when worn out.
A further object of the invention is toprovide a rotary cutting device adapted to make a smooth clean out either against, with, or across the grain and with which the work will require less sandpapering than heretofore.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rotary cutter which will not require much pressure to push the work through the machine. j
Furthermore, it is the object of the invention to provide simple and effective means for securing the cutters or tools in their adjustment and for effectually preventing the same from being displaced by the pressure incident to the use of the rotary cutter.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. v
In the drawings, Figure 1. is an elevation of a rotary cutter constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the stock or head. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the adjustable cutters or tools. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1,'the set-screw being removed.

1 designates a stock or head having a central circular opening 2 to receive a shaft or mandrel and provided with an annular series of projecting peripheral cutter-supporting extensions 3 and interveinng clearance-recesses 4, having a slight inward taper. The outer face of each extension is inclined to the radius of the head, and the said extensions 3 are provided in their outer faces with dovetailed grooves 5 to receive dovetailribs 6 of cutters or tools 7, which may be of any desired number and which may vary in form.

The extensions are provided at opposite sides of the grooves or ways with fiat bearing-faces which lie beyond the said grooves or ways and which receive similar fiat faces located beyond the dovetail ribs at opposite sides thereof. The dovetailed grooves, whichextend the entire length of each extension 3,
. are centrally arranged and are open at each end,'and the stock or head is provided at each extension with a transverse perforation 8, enlarged at one end to form an annular recess 9, which intersects the dovetailed groove 5. The perforation 8 is threaded to receive a setscrew 10, which is provided with an enlarged clamping-head 11, adapted to engage the adjacent side edge of the dovetail rib 6 at the point where the recess 9 intersects the groove 5. The head 11 is provided at its outer face with the usual groove to receive the blade of 1 a screw-driver, and the inner face of the head is flat and is arranged in parallelism with the side faces of the stock or head 1. The setscrew 10, which is readily. adjustable, is adapted to firmly hold the cutter or tool 7 in its adjustment, and it effectually prevents the cutter or tool from being accidentally displaced by the pressure incident to the use of the rotary cutting device. As the sharp side edge of the dovetail rib is adapted to bite into the inner face of the set-screw, there is no tendency of the set-screw to accidentally unscre. through the rotary motion of the cutting de' vice.
The cutters or tools 7 are tangentially ar ranged, and they are provided with tapering projecting portions having cutting edges 12, formed by' beveling the engaging cutting ends, and the beveled end faces 13 of the cutters or .tools are arranged in alinement with the adjacent side walls of the clearancerecesses 4. The cutters or tools have steep bevels, and as there is ample clearance-space afforded by the recess the rotary cutting device will make a smooth clean cut when cutting with, against, or across the grain, and the vanced to preserve the proper position of their cutting edges. The cutters take the full width of the head, as the dovetailed ribs offset the cutting edge from the head and do not affect the same. The outer'faces 15 of the cutters or tools are concavely curved in crosssection, and the cutting edges 12 are curved, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The concavely-curved cutting edges 12 are designed for cutting molding but a cutter or tool having a straight cutting edge or a cuttinge dge of any other desired form may be employed, as will be readily understood. As the cutting ends of the tools or cutters are beveled, as shown, the said tools or cutters do not require a skilled mechanic to sharpen them, and when they are worn out they may be renewed without discarding the stock or head 1.
In practice the rotary cutting device will be provided with a suitable gage for enabling the cutters or tools to be accurately adjusted.
It will be seen that the rotary cutting device is adapted to make a smooth clean cut and that it is adapted to effect a saving in both time and labor, as it ill enable the material to be run through a machine with little pressure, and it will not require the services of a skilled mechanic to sharpen or adjust the cutters or tools.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is+
1. A device of the class described comprising a stock or head provided with a plurality of peripheral extensions and having intervening clearance-recesses, said extensions being provided with grooves, a plurality of tangentiallyarranged cutters adjustably mounted 011 the said extensions and extend ing into the grooves thereof, and setscrews mounted on the stock or head and provided with heads engaging the cutters and securing the same in their ad ustment.
2. A device of the class described comprising a stock or head having a plurality of peripheral extensions and intervening recesses, said extensions being grooved and thestock or head being provided with transverse perforations, the latter being enlarged at one end to form recesses which intersect the grooves of the extensions, cutters mounted on the extensions and extending into the grooves thereof, and set-screws arranged in l the said perforations and having heads located in the recesses and engaging the cutters at the points of intersection of the recesses and the grooves. j 3. A device of theclass described compris Q ing a stock or head provided with spaced pe ripheral extensions having dovetailed grooves, said stock or head being also provided with l transverse perforations enlarged at one end l to form recesses, which intersect the dovetailed grooves, cutters having dovetail ribs arranged in the said grooves and exposed at the points of intersection of the grooves and the recesses, and screws mounted in the perforations and having heads located within the recesses and provided with flat inner faces for engaging the dovetail ribs at the side edges thereof. A device of the class described comprising a stock or head provided with an annular series of peripheral extensions having tapered projections and provided with dovetailed grooves or ways and having flat bear- 1 ing-faces at opposite sides of the grooves or ways at points beyond the same, said stock or head being also provided with inwardlytapered clearance-recesses, located between the said extensions and' having inwardlyconverging side walls, and tangentially-arranged cutters provided with dovetail ribsof the extensions, said cutters having flat inner faces at opposite sides of the ribs to fit against the flat faces of the extensions, and having beveled faces at their engaging or cutting ends arranged in the same plane as the contiguous side walls of the clearance-recesses.
5. A device of the class described comprising a stock or head provided with an an nular spaced series of peripheral extensions having centrally-disposed dovetailed grooves or ways, which extend throughout the length of each extension and are open at each end, i the outer face of each extension being inclined to the radius ofthe head, said stock or head being also provided with clearance-recesses located between each of the said extensions, and tangentially-arranged adjustable cutters of a width coincident with the width of the stock or head and having cutting edges of corresponding width, said cutters being also provided with central longitudinal dovetail ribs side faces of the cutters and mounted in the ways, and means for securing the cutters in their adjustment.
