Letters Patent No. 84,930, dated December l5, 1.868. I
IMIPROVNIENT IN STOVE-PIPB DAMPERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettersj Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern .t
Be it known that I, LEVI O. ALLEN, of Gardiner, county of Kennebec, State of Maine, have invented a new anduseful Improved Stove-Damper; aud I do hereby declare that the following is 'a full and clear Adescription thereof, reference being had to the'accompanyingA drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
vIn the drawings- Figure l represents a side sectional view of a stovepipe with mydamper;
Figure 2, a cross-section of pipe, showing the bottom view of the damper; and i Figure 3, anothersectional view, vertically cut through the pipe.
This invention consists o'f a damper which shall -reflect back the heat when shut, and still allow the escape of the smoke in a sufhciently rapid manner to keep up the fire. Y
In constructionJ forni my damper of two semi-ovate plates, hinged together at the stiaight sides. plates, A and A', are constructed of such a size and shape, in reference to the pipe in which they are to be placed, that when spread out to the full limit allowed by the sides of the pipe, they being centrally hinged in the same, they will form an angle of ninety degrees to each other, and forty-five from the horizontal line drawn across its axis. This, however, is not imperative, but only gives the greatest per cent. of reflected' heat, which, generally moving upwards in the central part of the iiue, is thrown back, and the smoke allowed to pass by the edges' of the plates A and A', scallops a a, 85e., being cut around their edges in order to prevent a too close joint.
The manner of operating these plates is as follows: The plates A and Aare hinged upon a shaft, B, which is arranged in the stove-pipe so that it can be V moved longitudinally through it.
Each plate has one socket, c, which meet in the middle.
In the bottom side of these sockets are cut slots D These a washer, H, on the other end of the shaft, preventsv vit from being pulled through the pipe.
This washer is made with avhole in the lowerY part large enoughto be slipped over the shaft, and a smaller socket in the upper part, into which the neck of the shaft-end is slipped, thus preventing the Washer from coming off, unless lifted up, until the lower hole is on a line with the shaft. v
The advantages of this device are, that I obtain a simple and cheap damper, easily manufactured, and
one that reflects back the greatest per cent. of heat from the flue.
Having described my invention, -\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination and arrangement of the two semi-ovate plates A and A', hinged together upon and operated by a common shaft, B, put through the pipe or flue horizontally, substantially as hereinshown and described. 2. 'lhe arrangement of the slots D and D', in combination with the pintles E and E', upon the shaft B, substantially as shown. Y
3. -In combination with the shaft B, the key F and -washer H, arranged and constructed as described and shown.
