UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ROOT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
FOLDING DOOR OF STOVES.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No.
To all whom, t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES Roo'r, of Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements for Doors of Stoves and Grates, and that the .following is atull, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes them from all other'things before known and of the usual manner of making, modifying, and using the same.
Many devices have been made to fold back andA conceal doors for similar purposes as those devised by me but without the entire" convenience and advantage which my improvement possesses, in most instances they involve a complicated operat-ion in opening and closing them or they are so placed in contact with the fire'chamber that they become injured by the heat and rendered unmanageable.
Hy device consists in projecting a hollow chamber or open pilaster on each side of the fire place shown at in the drawing, of suitable dimensions to allow the doors to slide int and admit a free circulation of air without impeding or cutting off the radiation of heat from the stove in any manner on the sides and by the :tree passage of air all around the doors they are kept sufficiently cool not to be injured or warped so as to prevent their readily working. The doors (o) open from the center either way and there is a` division horizontally so as to admit of the portion above the grate or below to be opened independently. Each of these doors are formed of three more or less sections jointed together and each section is paneled. To form these doors I cast the sections together in the manner of butt hinges. A bar (Z2) serves as a division be- 8,493, dated November 4, 1851.
tween the upper and lower doors. It runs along opposite the upper bar of the grate and is grooved on its upper and under side in which grooves the bottom of the upper doors and top of the under doors slide there being similar grooves at the top and bottom of the fire place for the same purpose, these grooves extend into the pilasters above named into which the panels slide, turn and i'old around as clearly shown in the cross section Figui?. The doors by this arrangement open clear back to the jamb so that an ash pan or other convenience can be introduced the entire width of the fire place, and when closed they inclose perfectly the space forming a tight door-all this requires but the simple action of sliding back or drawing out the door without other adjustment more than in an ordinary sliding door. In addition to this convenience my doors are divided above and below the bar as before named so that either the top or bot-tom portion can be opened or closed independently to regulate. The other parts of the grate or steve may be of any desired pattern and the doors and pilasters made highly ornament-al.
Having thus fully described my improved doors for grates and stoves what I claim therein as new and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent is- The sliding and folding doors in combination with pilasters by which I prevent the heating of the doors and warping consequent thereon and admit a free radiation of heat from the side of the stove substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
J AMES ROOT.
