TRIWIIVlER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 26, 1907.
Application iiled August 8, 1906. Serial No. 329,769.
To all whom t 7am/ U concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trinnners for Sewing-Machines, oi' which the following is a specifica.- tion.
This invention relates to trimmers for sewing-machines, and it has for its object to provide a simple and convenient trimming attachment which may be operated by the movement of the needle-bar for the purpose of trimming fabric as it passes beneath the presser-foot simultaneously with sewing the seam.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which may be adjusted laterally without interferingl with the operation thereof.
Further objects are to. simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.
Writh these and other ends in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consisting in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying` drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the invention may be made when desired.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trimming attachment constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view ci the same.
Corresponding parts in both figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved attachment is mounted upon a base-plate l, having a slot 2 for the passage of a thumb-screw, whereby the attachment may be secured in position for operation upon the bed-plate of a sewing-machine. To one side edge of the base-plate 1 is secured a blade 3, having a cutting edge A and an upward-extending lug 5, upon which latter is pivotally mounted a blade 6, having a cutting edge 7, that cooperates with the cutting edge il of the blade', the two combining to form a pair of shears. Pivotally mounted upon the lug 5 above the blade 6 is a lever S, having a curvilinear or ogee-shaped lower edge 9, that is adapted to engage the correspondingly-shaped upper edge 10 of the blade 6, which latter will thus be operated by the lever 8 when the latter rocks upon its pivot.
The lever 8 is provided with a handle portion which includes a U-shaped or laterallyoffset member 11 and an arm 12. The oiset member 1 1 is disposed between the lever8 and the arm 12, with each of which it is hingedly connected, as by means of pins 13. The arm 12 has a slot l5, whereby it may be operatively connected with the needle-bar of the sewing-machine to which it is applied.
In operation the improved attachment is mounted upon the bed-plate of the sewingmachine adjacent to the presser-foot, the presser-bar being spanned by the offset portion 11 of the handle member of the lever, which permits the shears to be adjusted as close to the seam as may be desired. The slotted arm 12 of the handle portion of the lever is placed in engagement with a lug or stud upon the needle-bar the vertical reciproeatory motion of which will thus serve to operate the lever 8, whereby the shearblade 6 is actuated, said blade serving in conjunction with the iiXed blade 3 to trim the edge of the material that is being operated upon. The slot 2 of the base-plate of the attachment enables the latter to be adjusted laterally, such adjustment being rendered possible by the jointed members constituting the handle oil the operating-lever, said jointed handle portion being capable of adjustment, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, so that the slotted arm 12 will properly engage the needle-bar in any position occupied by the base-plate of the attachment.
This improved trimming` attachment is simple in construction and inexpensive, and it may be easily and effectively applied to and used in connection with various makes of sewing-machines.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In a trimming attachment for sewing- IIO pivoted upon the lug and having an ogeeshaped lower edge adapted -to engage the Correspondingly-shaped upper edge of the movable blade7 and an olset handle hinged to said lever.
2, A trimming,` attachment for sewing-maehines Comprising a base-plate havingl a vertically-disposed stationary blade, a movable blade pivoted upon the stationary blade, an operating-lever pvotally supported adj aeent to the movable blade adapted to engage the l latter, and a jointed handle member hingedly connected with the operating-lever and including a laterally-offset portion and a slotted arm.
ln testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT H. PARKER.
