and Josera W. SononND'aLnN, both. citizens of the "United States, and residents, respecvented certain new andnsefill Improvements in Safety-Fuses, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
Our invention relates more particularly to fuses for arcdghts; and its objects are, first, to permit the repairing or replacing of the luso-Wire Whenever necessaryv without disconnecting or removing it from the circuit,
and, second, to provide a simple and economical Way of connecting the ends of the fuse This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described, and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of my invention.. Fig. 2 is a similar View sliowing. the lid of the tubular casing separated. from and placed above tlie saine. Fig. 3 is View similar to Fig. l, showing the lose with diierenosliaped terminals. lfig. e is a crosssection taken on dotted line e 4, Fig. Fig. 5 is a lan View of one end ci the ruse, having mod.` red means applied thereto ifor'retaining the removable section of the casing in place. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the form of my invention shown n'lligs. l and 2, Vbut with inodi fied means for retaining the lid thereon.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a tubular shell or casing, which is made of suit alole insulating material, is or any desirable length and diameter, and lies its ends closed by metal plugs B B. Flug E are preferably cylindrical, andere of suc-li. length that they extend beyond the ends et the casing A to provide contacts for tfno wires or the circuit, and their inner ends terminate a slight die tance nearer the center o? length of tlie casing than 'the end edges cfa eevrnental opening l) wliose sides are parallel W1 the axis of the casing, and whose ends preferably transl verse. This opening aiiords access to tlie inside of the casing, and, it will be observed, ero tends from near one end. of tlre saine 'to the 'otl'ie-r. A. lid or cover D closes'tliis opening,
and is so shaped as to form, together Wit-lr the' casing, a cylindrical housing;r for E, as'will liereinait inner ends otpln which the ends of the. cover rest W tlse inseMwiire ignore fully appesi of Bettendorf and Davenport, intheV county of Scott and State of lowa, have in- '.lllie form shoulders einst in. its K seat, and this cover is removably retained nl its seat by means of cli s a o, which latter are so shaped as to exten partially around .the
- casing, so that when secured to said casing by screws b (or otlierwiselat a point diametrically opposite the `cover their ends Willrlap past the side edges of tne same, and retain it in place with suiiicient pressure to prevent the accidental displacement thereof.v There are preferably two ofthese clips-one near each endand their ends are turned outward 'to facilitate their being spread apart slightly by the lingers of 'the operator when it is desired to remove the cover. l also prefer to recess' the longitudinal edges of the opening C at its center of lengtlysubstantiall f as shown at X in the drawirifs, to afford y a purchase for the `fingers on the sides of the cover. i
The ends of the plugs B B Within the casing are provided with a lug c, extending there'- iroin, and each ot' these lues has a screw (l tapped into the side facing tie cover l). The ends of a suitable longitudinally disposed :fuse-Wire E are bent around the barrel of these screws and securely held by-tiglitening the latter. il do not wisli to be confined to plugs having cylindrical outer extensions, as the same may lie dispensed with and other metal terminal extensions c as sliown in Fie. .3 be substituted their lace. Both of these forms of terminals are in common use, and while l make no claim of inventor ship 'thereto they are essential to a practical fuse connection with 'the other parte of my' invention'.
In. l show a modified forniolE the clamp or clip for securing the cover oil the casing in. place. This clip consists of a metal .l5-and. or r'errule lowing the edges thereof next tlli,
cover recessed, a"

To tar bands are revetoed on. tl' aires until tte recesses g are in suoli position '1* f t adjacent ends of the oofeoan los removed therefrom. oovers seated in its proper place, lvyrevolv said bands until their recesses ore in such po tron that the ends of the cover cannot be moved. therefrom the casing will be se cureiy closed. ll'lhat We claim as l, A safetyl'use c of insulating open the casi' nie .1 hen 'tire
