Description
delitti tant aientittica t f Lette/rs .Patent No. 84,611, dat@ December l, 1868.
Yrivnnovrnvxnrrr 1N CLTIVATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the' same.
To all 'whom 'it may conce/rn.:
Be it known that we, ISAAC H. CHAPPELL and J AMEs MONTGOMERL both of Decatur, in the county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gultivators; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, suicient to` enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appeitains, to fully under stand and construct the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation oi' our improved cultivator;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the same; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view of part of it.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several gures.
The nature of our invention consists, first, in a novel connection ofthe draught-pole to the seat-bar, whereby an easy management of the cnltivator-plow frame .is obtained; secondly, in a novel means of elevating the cultivator-plow frame by a roller pivoted between two standards, to which the frame is connected by chains, and to which it can be secured in an elevated position when the plows are ,out of the ground.
A, in the drawings, may represent the axle, on which the wheels B move.
On the centre of this axle A is secured the seat-bar C, the forward end-oi which is slotted at c.
In this slot c is pivoted a pin, a, wh ich passes through a bar, Z, the whiie-tree-I), and draught-pole E, anut, d, moving on its threaded end, holding the diiierent bars together. f
rlhe bar b issecured at its rear end to the under side of the front cross-piece G of the frame to which the draught-pole E is fastened.
These crosspieces,'F and G, are secured to the sidebeams H I, which converge towards the forward end of the ame.
On the inside of these beams H I are fastened standards J J of the plows K K', which are braced to the standards N N' of the plows O O', secured -to the outside of' beams H I, and to the rear of standards J J', the axle A passing between the two sets of standards.
0n the rear ends of beams H I are formed blocks It fi, to which handles P P are attached, their forward ends being fastened on the cross-piece G.
On the axle A, outside of beams H I, are secured uprights, R R', between which a roller, S, is pivoted.
Attached to this roller are chains lr fr', which hook over pins or hooks s s', on the rear side of cross-piece Gr.
By means of these chains and hooks the plow-frame can, be set at any depth required.
The end ofthe draught-pole 1G is provided with a pin or hook, c, over which the lever-hook-T onthe roller S, may. be hooked when it is desired to elevate the plow's entirely out of and over the ground.
The advantages of our improved attachment of the draught-pole and seat-bar are many.
The draught-pole E, being pivoted laterally on pin a, allows a lateral movement of the plow-frame, while a horizontal movement is given to it by the slot c, in which pin a is pivoted. v
The seat, with the drivers weight, balances the draught-polaoand assists in elevating the plow-frame.
"he hook T may be used as a lever on the roller S, to elevate the 'arne momentarily, to avoid stones, stumps, rocks, Sac., While, by the chains fr/rand hooks s' s', the frame can be set to any required depth.
Having th'us desciibed our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl 1. A cultivator, the draught-pole and plow-frame of which are pivoted on the seat-bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. v
2; The attachment ofthe draught-pole to the seat bar, by means of the pin a, pivoted in slot c and nut il, substantially as and for ther purposes set-forth.
ISAAC H. CHAPPELL.
JAMES MONTGOMERY.
