HANDSAW ATTACHMENT- Speccaton of Letters Patent.

Application led December 1S, 1906.A Serial Nox 348,437.
To cti/Z whom t may cbncern:a
Be it known that I, WALTER C. SENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Handsaw Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to handsaw attachment and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is toprovide an attachment adapted to be used as a trysquare or a miter, and which when not in use be folded up into close proximity of the edge of the saw-handle, aod thus occupy but small space and be out of the way. The attachment is xed directly to the blade of the saw and cooperates with the upper edge thereofwhen used as a try-square and with the rear edge thereof when used as a miter. A swinging member is provided, which is adapted to lie against abutment provided at the edges oi the handles, and the said swinging member operates as a work-engaging stop when the attachment is used in either of the cap acities of a try-square or miter. The said swinging member is provided with, a pivoted portion, which may be swung into alinement with the said member, and thereby elongate the latter, or which may be swung into closed relation with the said member, thereby reducing the space occupied by the same.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the attachment in one position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attachment in another position, and Fig. 3 is a section cut on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The saw-blade 1 is provided with a straight upper edge 2 and a straight rear edge 3, which is disposed at right angles to the edge 2. The abutment 4 is riveted or otherwise secured directly to the blade 1 and is located at the edge of the handle 5, AThe said abutment is provided with an upper portion 6,
which extends at right angles to the edge 2 of the bladel, and a lower portion 7, which extends at an angle of forty-five degrees to the edge 3 of the blade 1. The member 8 is pivoted upon the blade 1 of the saw at a point directly opposite the point of merger of the sections 6 and 7. The said member 8 is pivoted, as above stated, at a point near its lower end, so that the said member 8 is at portions throughout its length located opposite both the sections 6 and 7. The catch-lock 9 is pivotally connected to the upper end of the member 3 and is adapted to catch over the upper end of the section 6 and hold the said member 8 in close contact with the side of the said section 6. The bar 10 is pivoted at its lower end to the pivot-pin 11, which attaches the member 8 to the blade 1. The said member 3 is provided near its lower end with a cross-pin 12, and the bar 10 is provided in its edge with a recess 13 for the reception of the said pin 12 when the said bar 10 is swung down into alinement with the member S. Thus the said member 3 may be elongated, and the said bar 10 is swung down into the position above indicated when the member 8 and the said bar coperate with the saw edge 2 in providing a try-square.
By disengaging the loclecatch 9 from the upper end of the section 6 and swinging the member S and bar l() upon the pivot-point 11 until the edges of the said member 8 and bar 10 come in contact with the edge of the section 7 the said bar and member 8 may be used in cooperation with the saw edge 3 for marking oli an angle upon the work, the legs of which will be disposed at forty-five degrees to each other.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A handsaw attachment comprising an abutment fixed to the saw-blade and having sections disposed at an angle to each other, a pivoted member connected with the sawblade at a point opposite the point of merger of said sections and having portions adapted to abut against either of said sections and a catch pivotally connected to the upper end of said pivoted member and adapted to engage the upper end of said abutment.
2. A saw attachment comprising an abutment fixed to the side of the saw-blade and having sections extending at an angle to each IOO other, a pvoted member connected with the l In testimony that I claim the foregoing as saw-blade at a point opposite the point of my own I have hereto afIiXed my signature merger of said sections and having portions l in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
adapted to engage either of said sections, a l /VALTER C. SENNETT. bar pivoted to said pvoted member and itnesses:
adapted to be folded against the same or VILLIAH H. GULLIVER,
swung into alinement With the same. f C. F. TENNANT.
