Referring now more particularly to the details of construction it will be noted that the rotary member 5 which operates the links 8 is provided at one side as heretofore referred to, with a sheave 19 over which the chain 12 is designed to pass, and the central portion of such member is recessed so that when the members are in position shown in Figure 1, the links 8, 8 are received in such recess thereby allowing the links to move as far to the right as is desirable and also supporting them laterally to" prevent a turning movement on the pivots. As indicated in Figure 3, the lower ends of the links 8 are forked to receive the ends of the members 20, which members 20 extend through the doors and are provided with bolts 21 on their outside ends. It will be noted from Figure 1 in which the doors are shown in closed position, that the pivotal point 9 from which the links 8 depend, is slightly to the right of the pivot 6 so that the weight of the doors and the material thereon tends to move such pivot point 9 to the right instead of to the left and therefore when the parts are in this position there is no tendency of the doors to open, and in fact they are held securely shut. The member 5 is prevented from moving farther to the right under the weight of the doors and the material by the connecting rod 18 heretofore referred to, which rod is pivoted at one end to the member 5 and at the other end to the member 17 operated from the drum 11.
The locking attachment just referred .to also constitutes a means whereby the danger of operating the crank when the doors are to be opened 1S avoided which means will now be'deseribed in detail, reference being had particularly to the detailed showings in Figures 5 to 8. The member 17 consists of a collar provided with a lever arm 18, the 001- lar being loosely mounted upon the shaft 10 and being recessed upon the side toward the drum 11 which recess is, as shown, in Figure 8, provided with an inwardly projecting lug mounted upon the shaft 10 intermediate t e member- 17 and the drum 11 which member 24 has a: lug 25 projecting from the side and adapted to engage the lug 23. A third collar 26 is mounted upon the shaft 10 intermediate the I collar 26 and drum 11, which member has on o posite sides thereof, lugs 27 and .28 respectlvely, as indicated in Figure 7, the lug 27 being adapted to engage a lug 29 projecting collar 24, or additiona from the end ofv the drum 11, and the lug 28 being adapted to engage the lug 25 on the collars with lugs if more slip is desired and such collars are added. This arrangement constitutes a slip connection which is designed to cause only a slight movement of the member 17' and the connecting rod 18 while the drum 11 is being rotated a sufiicient distance to raise the doors to closed position. The drum 11 will rotate nearly a full revolution before its lug' 29 will engage the lug 27 on the collar 26, and the collar 26 will rotate nearly a full revolution before its lug 28 will engage the lug 25 on the collar 24 and the collar 24 will rotate nearly a full revolution before its lug 25 will engage the projection 23 of the member 17, or in other words the drum 11 will rotate over two revolutions before the arm 18*will be positivcly operated, but after such engagement theparts will all rotate together. The arrangement whereby a plurality of turns of I the operating lever are secured reduces the power necessary to operate the lever and such feature is necessitated by the great weight of the doors. It will also be apparent .that on the reverse movement the drum will have to be rotated over two revolutions before the member 18 will be started in its return movement. When the doors are in open position it will be seen from Figure 2 that the connecting rod 18 will occupy the position as indicated, the arm' 18' being in substantially a vertical position. Vihen the shaft 10 is revolved a trifle over two revolutions the member 5 will be rotated. raising loo the links 8, 8 and bringing the parts into the position shown in Figure 1 and the rod 18' will be moved to the right by virtue of its engagement with the member 5 during which time the slip connection including the collars 24 and 26 coacting with the drum and the member 17 will allow the shaft to rotate freely. Just before the arm 18 reaches'the position shown in Figure 2, however, the lugs of the slip connection will come into engagement and the arm 18 moved positively to the right. arm 18 swings is greater than the radius of the winding drum andthe pivot point 30 of the member 18 is nearer to the axis of the member 5 than is the sheave 19, the positive actuation of the member 18 at the end of the stroke produces the slack in the chain 12 as indicated in Figure 1. The connecting rod 18 will, when in the position shown in Figure 1, constitute a locking device for the member '5 and consequently the doors, for the reason that the pivotal points 30 and 31 of the rod will be on a line with theaxis of the drum 11.

The operation in opening the doors is as follows: The pawl 15 having been released, the handle upon the shaft 10 is revolved a suflicient number of turns to unwind the chain 12. During this time the doors cannot open because, as before stated, the pivot point 9 is to the right of the supporting pivot 6 of the member 5 and furthermore the member 18 remains in the osition indicated in Figure 2 until the sha t 10 hasrevolved a sufficient number of times in areverse direction to cause the lugs of the slip connection I There is, however, no jerk upon the handle as y 'it will be apparent that the slip connection provides for the revolutions of the drum incident to the opening of the doors before the lug on thecollar positively engages the member 17. There will therefore be no danger to the operator in releasing the pawl and in maintaining hishold upon the handle.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. In combination, a gravity opening door, an operating shaft, an operative connection between the shaft" and door, means independent of the. operative connection for holding the door closed, and means operable by the shaft to release such holding means after the operative connection has been moved to a position to allow the door to open.
2. In combination, a gravity opening door, an operating shaft, a flexible operative connection between the shaft and door, means independent of the flexible connection for holding' the door closed, and means. operable by the shaft to release the holding means when the flexible connection has been unwound from the shaft sufficientlyfo allow the door to open. 3. In combination, a gravity opening door, an operating shaft, an operative connection between the shaft and door, means independent of the operative connection for holding the door closed, and means operable by the shaft to move such holding means to securing position afterthe door is closed.
4. In combination, a pair of swinging gravity-opening doors, links and a rotatable member secured thereto for closing the doors, a rotatable operating shaft, a flexible connection between the member and the shaft, an independent connection extending i i from the member to a position adjacent the shaft for holding the door closed, and means connected to the shaft whereby such independent connection is brought into operation when the doors are closed and whereby such independent connection is released on the reverse rotation of the shaft after such reverse movement has unwoundthe flexible connection.
