Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 199'?.
Application led December 10. 1906. Serial No. 347,218.
T0 a-ZZ whom, it muy colte/frm:
Be it known that I, .llowalan O. CARTER,
a citi/ten. ot the Lnited States, residing at Detroit, in the county ol Vi'ayne andtate oit Michigan, have invented certain new and separately to'the driving-wheels, or both thrown in, as desired.
The objectI is to provide a simple wellbalanted construction in which iniury to an j engine or a crank-shaft will not disable the t t inediate shats, and this sliding is etl'eeted lnaeliine.
Aeeoriling to niy invention :wo engines or two sets oi engines, preferably disposed vertically, are located at the iront of the iranie at either side of the long-itialinal niedian line thereof. Eaeh engineorsettiseiluippedwith a longitudinal -i'aiil -J-1hal"(. two miei-mediate i sliattsare lozated in ahneizient. therewith. t mounted on a transverse rod t;
means is provided for eoupfing either or both the intermediate shaft sw ith the cori esponiling crank-shaft, and gearing is provided het een the intermediate shaits and a central longitudinal driving-shalt.
In the drawings, Figure] is a plan view. Fig. 2 a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail of the elzitrli-operaiing foot-levers. Fig. 4 is a detail o," one ofthe eliiteh devi:
, Reiriing to the drawings, A indii'ates a suitable l'ranie `For the autoiiioliile,a11d B the driving-wheels thereof. lAt the Front oi" the ii'anie at either side ol" the longitudinal n1ei lever A.
(lian line are disposed two sets C of vertiral engines D, very st itably ol the gasolenemotor type. by the traine and overlie two longitndinal crank-shinr ts E, n hit-h are joui-nailed in iront cross-pieee F. Each erank-shal't is prol vided advantageously at its rear end w ith a level' Z, so that subsequent pressure upon fly-wheel H. v y
I I are a pair of interinediate'sha; ts located in rear of and in alineinent with the crank- Ashafts and suitably joiirnaled in cross-pieces Also journaled in 1 these cross-pieces is the Forward section M ol' 1 the driving-shaft N, wliieh extends rearwaid K and L of the traine.
'in lthe plane of the longitudinal center of' the machine and connects with the axle N of the drive-wheels. y O and P are the Casin-gs of ordinary forms of gearinff.
'lhese engines are st .pported i the drive-shaft between the two adjai-ent parallel cross-pieces 1i and L and the gearing is very sinipy etleeted by providing the section M ofthe drive-shaft n ith two sprocketwheels Q and lt, the one. iii rear el the other, and the shirts l each with a. sprocket-wheel S, opposed to one of the sprockets Q and R.
l itie intermediate shafts I are eoitpled to the eranli-shirits by ineans ol' cone-clutches T, the inale nieinbeis or cones U beingr carried by the ;oy\;,aytl ends of the intermediate shafts and the iieiiiale `members V being cariied by the rear ends of 'the erank-sliaits irninediately behind the ily-n heel.
lt w ill he inderstood that the cones are splined to .slide longitudinally on the interingt upward and rearward to crank-arms f,
borne by spaced roeli-S eeves g, which are Each of these sleeves rai-ries a rigid 'opstanding lootl-l ver Y conveniently loi'ated or the operator.
Mounted on the rod li, interiiediate the sleeves g, is a rock-sleeve lc, which carries a ioot-levtr Z, which is disposed to rock its sleeve in the opposite direction from that in which pressure of the ehaiii'l'enrs foot reeks the sleeves g. A transverse pin or rod m, carried by the ,foot-lever Z, is disposed to hear against the front of the sltanks ofthe levers l', so that both of the foot-levers Y may he thrown rearward by depressing the 1t will le understood that either set of engines nay he thrown in by pressing the appropriate lever Y forward with the foot and that pressure upon both levers will tlrow in both sets. 'Ile forward inovenent of either or both of the levers 'l' necessarily. shifts the this lever will throw out either set or both, as the ease may be.
