Description

`useful improvements in piston-rod glands,
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
DALTON RISLEY, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO CLEVELAND METALLIC PACKING COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND,
OHIO.
PISTON-'ROD GLAND.
No. 845,122. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed April 28, 1906. Serial No. 314,217.
A' the packing is confined by virtue of the engagement with follower 12', the latter being under constant pressure exerted by the tension of coil-spring 4 in the following manner: Follower 12 is provided with a reduced inner end 14, providing a shoulder 15. A ring 16 seats on reduced portion 12 and abuts shoulder 15 thereof. It will thus be observed that ring 16 is engaged by one end of coil-spring 4 and, due to the relation just described as existing between ring 16 and the follower, the latter is retained under constant pressure.
Cap 9 is formed with openings 9 to receive a Spanner-wrench whereby the cap may be removed and replaced, it being observed that by removing cap 9 cone 11 the packing-rugs 12, and the follower may all be removed without disturbing spr ng 4, which latter is retained against movement by flange 6 of the gland, the tension of the coil-spring forcing ring 16 to a position to engage said flange, a sl ght space existing between flange 6 and ring 16 in order that the follower may i be automatically moved bythe spring to i take up wear as the same occurs. It will consequently be observed that the packing, together with its appurtenant parts, may be removed without disturbing spring 4, and, further, by simple removal of bolts 7 the entire gland may be instantly removed, permitting access to the spring.
By providing the gland with the parts as described a great saving in time is effected in removing and replacing the packing, since I entirely obviate disturbance of spring 4, which is the source of great difficulty and tedious operation in the replacement of the individual parts in assembling the same.
In Fig. 2 I show a modification which essentially differs from the preferred form indicated in Fig. 1 in that the gland as an entirety is removed instead of a component.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DALToN RIsLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at O.naha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Rod Glands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to certain new and l and has for its pri Ainary object the provision of a gland so constructed and related to the stuffing-box that the metallic packing rings or segments may be removed or replaced without disturbing the coil-spring, which I latter retains the follower for the packing in engagement with the packing rings or segments to thereby assure absolutely steamtight joints.
With the above and other objects in view the invention further consists in the details of construction and combination of parts now to be fully described and later pointed l out in the claims.
Referring' to the accompanying drawings, 'wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views, f Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view l of my invention, showing the saine applied to j a piston-rod; and Fig. 2 is a like view of a j modification embodying the same principle of operation.
In practice a stuffing-box (designated 1) is employed which embodies an annular wall 2 and a fiange 2', projecting outwardly therefrom, wall 2 being spaced from the pistonrod 5 to provide a chamber for the coilspring 4.
My invention particularly resides in the construction of gland, the latter being designated 5 and being formed with a'flange 6, projecting inwardly and abutting flange 2 of the stuffing-box. rIhe gland 5 is suitably secured to the stuffing-box by bolts 7 and further embodies a threaded part 8, which is l part thereof, as I have indicated preference engaged by the shell or cap 9, which latter for. In this form of the invention I thread has threaded portion 10 for t hat purpose. i the interior of the stuffing-box (designated The interior outer portion of cap 9 receives l 1) as at 20 and secure a threaded ring 21 cone 11, which provides an abutting surface j thereto, which ring, projecting inwardly, for the metallic packing rings or segments forms an abutting surface for ring 16, 12, which are preferably of the form disj against which coil-spring 4 engages. The closed in Letters Patent granted to John gland 5 is formed with an inwardly-project- Badeker, December 20, 1904, No. 777,655,
ing and exteriorly-threaded wall 22, which October 17, 1905, N o. 801,959, and October j engages in a threaded depression 23, formed 17, 1905, No. 801,960. The opposite face of in the stuffing-box.
ICC
By mere removal of bolts 7 gland 5 may be instantly removed, thereby permitting access to the packing and related parts without disturbance of spring Li', as in the prel ferred form of the invention.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of the invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence l consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the scope of the claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. ln combination with a stuffing-box having a spring therein, a gland secured to said stuffing-box, a cone engaging said gland and the packing held therein, a folj lower engaging said packing, a ring seated on sa d follower and normally engaged by said spring, and a projection spaced from the ring engagement therewith to restrict the outer movement of said ring.
2. ln combination with a stuffing-box having a spring therein, a gland secured to said stuffing-box, a cone engaging said gland and the packing held therein, a follower engaging the packing, a ring movably mounted on said follower, a spring engaging the ring and a projection receiving support from the stuffing-box to restrict the outer movement of said ring and spring when the gland and packing are removed.
3. ln combination with a stuffing-box j having a spring therein, a gland on the stuffing-box, packing having one side thereof engaged by the gland, a follower for engaging the opposite side of said packing, said follower having a reduced inner end forming a shoulder, a ring seating on said reduced portion and engaging said shoulder and being engaged by said spring, and a projection for engagement with said ring to restrict the outer movement thereof, said ring being normally out of engagement with said projection.
4. ln combination with a stufling-boX having a spring therein, and a gland secured thereto, packing engaging said gland, and said spring, and means wherebysaid packing may be removed without disturbing said spring.
5. ln combination with a stufling-box having a spring therein, and a gland secured thereto, packing disposed between said gland and spring and under constant pressure exerted by said spring, and means whereby said acking may be removed from engagement with said spring and whereby the latter will be retained against outer movement. j
6. ln combination with a stuffing-box having a spring therein, and a gland secured l thereto, packing disposed between the gland l and spring and under constant pressure eX- erted by the spring, and means for engagei nient with said spring whereby its outward movement will be arrested when said packing is removed.
7. In combination with a stuffing-box having a spring therein, and a gland secured thereto, packing disposed between the gland and spring and under constant pressure eX- erted by said spring, and a projection normally out of engagement with the spring to engage the latter and arrest the outer movement thereof when said packing is removed.
8. ln combination with a stuffing-boxhaving a spring therein, and a gland secured thereto, an inwardly-extending flange carried by the gland, a removable cap on the gland, a ring engaged by said spring and normally out of engagement with said flange, packing disposed between said cap and spring, and a follower having a reduced portion with a ring seating on said reduced portion.
9. ln combination with a stuffing-box having a spring therein, a gland secured to said stuffing-box and formed on its inner end with an inwardly-extending flange, a cap threaded into engagement with said gland, packing engaging in the cap, a follower for the packing having a reduced portion forming a shoulder, and a ring movably seated on said reduced portion and abutting said shoulder, said ring being engaged by said spring, and being forced thereby into engagement with said flange when the packing is removed.
10. In combination with a stuffing-box having a spring therein, a gland having threaded engagement therewith and means for restricting the outer movement of said spring when said gland which contains the packing is removed.
11. ln combination with a stuffing-box havin0`- a spring therein, a gland having threaded engagement with said stuffing-box, packing disposed between the gland an spring and under constant pressure exerted by said spring, and means whereby said packing may be removed without disturbing said spring.
12. ln combination with a stuffing-box having a spring therein, a gland having threaded engagement with said stuffing-box, packing disposed between the gland and spring and under constant pressure exerted by said spring, and means for engagement with said stuffing-box whereby said packing may be removed and be replaced without disturbing tlie eXtreme outer movement of the spring and the means for engagement with said spring when the gland and packing are removed.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DALTON RISLEY.
