Be it known'that I, JOHN ,Cnozinn, a subj ect of the King of England, residing at Ste.
Agathe, in the county 'of l otbiniere, Province'of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to railway-rail joints.
The object of my invention is to provide a rail-chair which will form a solid support for the meeting ends of rails and prevent depression thereof by the weight of a train passing thereover.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient locking means for binding the parts of my rail-chair together on a rail, so that the parts are firmlyheld against detachment; and my invention consists of the construction, combination, and arran ement of parts as herein illustrated, descri ed, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a,
part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my invention to the abutting ends of two rails. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken approximately on line2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken approximately on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken approximately on line 4 4 ofFig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the tread, 6 the web, and 7 the base-flanges of a common form of railway-rail. To bind the ends of the abutting rails together, I provide a main member, having a base 8 which is of greater width than the base-flanges 7 of the rails to be bound. One side of this base 8 has a flange 9, which fits closely to the upper face of the flange 7 and the web 6 and terminates just below the bottom face of the tread 5. Adjacent the edge of the base 8, opposite the flange 9, said base is provided with a T-shaped channel or groove 10, in which is disposed a jaw having a T-shaped base 11 of approximately the same size and contour as the groove or channel 10. On the T-shaped base 11 is a flange 12, whichextends upward and inward toa point just below the under face of the tread 5 of the rail andcloselyflts that side of the rail, all as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The flange 12 is provided witha plurality of slots 13, Figs. 1 and 2, through which are projected the fastening-bolts 14, the openings in the flange 9 being round. Thesebolts are provided with the usual rounded heads 15 and have their opposite ends provided with the screw-threads 16.
Longitudinally of the bolts and at their screw-threaded ends are provided a plurality of grooves 17 of approximately the same depth as the screw-threads 16. After the parts are adjusted to the proper position and the bolts '14 inserted the nuts 18 are placed on the bolts and tightened up in the usual way. Each of the nuts 18 is provided with an interior chamber 19, in which'is loosely ID0111113- ed a member 20, on the surface of which is provided a cam-surface having an edge 21, said cam-surface approximating the interior contour of the chamber 19. This edge 21 is adapted to engage the grooves 17 when the nuts are tightened up, so that a reverse movement of the nuts is prevented. When the nuts are being tightened up, the camsurface of the member 20 is carried back into the chamber; but the nut is prevented from working loose because the edge 21, being engaged in one of the grooves 17, strikes against the edge of the chamber 19 and prevents further reverse niovement of the bolt.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings the preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise form shown, for many of the details may be changed in form or position without affecting the operativeness or utility of my invention. I therefore reserve the right to make all such modifications as are included within the scope of the following clairrs or of niechanical equivalents to the stru ctr res set forth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I clain as new, 'anddesire to secureby Letters Patent, is
1. A railway-rail chair comprising a base having a flange on one side and having a T- shaped groove on the opposite side thereof, a jaw having a T-shaped base disposed in said groove and having a flange extending from said base provided with slots therein, and
bolts projected through the flange of said first member and through the slots of said second member and nuts on the bolts provided with rockable locking means.

Arailway-rail chair comprising a base having a flange on one side and a groove on its opposite side, a jaw having a base disposed in said groove and. having a flange extending from the base, bolts connecting. said flanges in, nuts disposed on the bolts, and a rockable locking member carried by each of the nuts adapted to engage in said grooves.
3. A railway-rail chair comprising a base having a flan e on one side and a groove on its opposite side, a jaw having a base disposed in said groove and having a flange extending from its base, bolts connecting said flan es and provided with grooves therein, nuts isposed on the bolts and provided with a charm ber therein, and a locking member rockably and provided with longitudinal grooves therehaving a flange extending from said base;
bolts disposed through said flanges and said Web and provided With longitudinal grooves;
nuts disposed on the bolts; and, a rockable locking member carried by the nuts adapted to engage said grooves.
