Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907.
Application filed July 11, 1904. Serial No. 216,118.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLANDOW S. PER- KINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newbern, in the county of Craven and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tool and Tool-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination household tools, and comprises a compound tool and tool-holder.
The object of the invention is to provide various iniplei'nents in one and the same device and to so arrange such implements relative to a novel and peculiar handle common to all the implements that other tools and implements may be held and operated by th said handle.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing a combination screw-driver, can-opener, icepick, and tack-puller in position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section on the line at a, Fig. 1. Fig. at is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the combination screw-driver, can-opener, and tackpuller.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The handleof the device consists of two diverging arms 1 and 2 joined by an end 3, a bar 4, and a cross-bar 5, having an inclined flange 6, extending from the edge of the arms 1 and 2 between the latter, the said flange cross bar thus dividing the handle-opening into separate spaces 7 and S. In the space 7 is pivoted at 9 to the arm 1 a corkscrew 10, which is held in a notch 11 of the cross-bar 5 by a beveled catch-pin 12, and the screw is swung into a seat 14 of the end 3 to be used. A tubular holder 13 is made on the arm 2 in the space '7 and extends from the cross-bar 5, which closes this end of the tube through the said handle end 3. This'tube is provided to hold an ice-pick or other similar implement 15. A nail-puller 16 is formed at the end of the s ace 8 opposite the flange 6, and the meta thereof closes the said space at this end only on one side. The other side is left open, and shoulders 17 are formed in the said metal, with a groove 18 between the shoulders. The bar 1 and the flange 6 assist in holding an implement comprising a tack puller 18 edge-tool 19, and a screw-driver 20, which is St ted on the shoulders 17.
A hammer 21 is formed at the end of the arm 2, and projecting therefrom is a lid-lifter 22. A jaw .23 projects from the arm 1 and terminates in a hook 24, and at the intersection of the arm and the jaw is a bail-hook 25. Upon the inner side of the jaw 23 is a projection 26 and semicircular openings 27. The peculiar construction of the jaw with the aid of the lifter 22 will grasp and hold apan or plate by inserting the edge or rim thereof between the lifter and the jaw. The openings 27 not only lighten the device, but permit the working therein of a pan or plate edge in lifting. The weight and shape of such handtools usually being objectionable, one side of the hammer metal and adjacent edge of the lifter is removed to reduce the weight. The handle-arms are convened, and the parts thereof lie within the bounds of the arms, so that there is no obstruction in handling the same.
It will be observed that the interval be tween the jaw and the lifter is sufficient to permit the insertion of the tools herein mentioned or of any other implements capable of fitting therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a toolholder comprising arms joined at one end by a portion having a groove adapted to hold round tools, a shoulder on each side of the groove and adapted for square or angular tools, the bar 5 standing edgewise across the interval between the arnis and flush with each side edge of the arms, the flange 6 inclined from one edge of the bar to the edge of the arms opposite said bar edge and forming a wedge abutment for all of said tools, and the bar 4 located between the grooved portion and the flange, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
