IMPROVEMENT 1N Boor-chimeneas.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sme.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itlknown that I, OLIVER M. ALAMs, of Milford,
in the county of Worcester, and in the 'State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Boot-Crimpers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side elevation.

Figure 3 is a section of, one of the movable jaws.
Figure 4 is a top view'of the movable plate.
'Ihe nature of my invention consists in the improved faceof the sliding jaws, and in the manner of operating said jaws, as will be hereinafter fully described.
To enable others' skilled in the art to make .and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the construction of my invention, I use the clamp or fulcrum a., and screw c, and screw-nut d, such asare in. common use in boot-crimps of this class.
I out a'slot through the top of the clamp or fulcrum a, to suit the size of the screw, and entirely-across the I then construct my jaws, b b, the width of the sides of clamp a, and about an inch long. To this jaw an arm extends up about one and a half inch,making the entire length of the jaw about three inches. On each side, near the top, is cut a groove, an eighth of an inch in depth and width, as seen in fig. 3. The inner side of these jaws, from about half way up, descends from a straight line ou'tward, forming an obtuse angle, thus' leaving the space between them wider at the lower end -thanat the middle.-
The faces of these jaws are cut in rows of teeth, which are segments of rows, in straight lines, at right angles `across the faces of the jaws, as seen at iig. 3, to give greater power in holding the leather than whenl the teeth are in lines entirely across the face. of the jaws,

By making the teeth or clamping-lines serrated or in segments, the open spaces and the solidcross-lines, alternating, give to the jaws a much rmer hold, as the leather is compressed or indented between the teeth indiierent directions, and making them less .liable to slip. I regard 'this a great improvement in boot-crimps. j
I may find-it convenient to make the rows of teeth in diagonal lines to each other, in quarter sections, on the face of the jaw, in segmentsf The plate d is slotted, as seen in fig. 4, and the upper end of the jaws b b passes up through it, and the grooves'are made to tit in the plate, so that, as the plate moves up or down, the jaws move with it.
The screw c is made to pass through the plate l and fulcrmn or clamp a, and, after Vit is thus inserted, the screw-nut e is screwed on it, as seen in iigs. l and 2. This nut is tapered on its four sides, to correspond with the inclination given to the jaws b b. y
The machine thus arranged is ready for operation.
In its operation, the leather to be crimped is litted to the treo, and the screw c turnedup until its end will rest on the back edge of the boot-tree, and the clamp and jaws descend iar enough to take hold ofthe leather between the jaws and clamp, when the screw o is then turned, bringing the nut e up between the jaws, pressing them tightly in on the leather, and griping firmly,-
by the teeth, on its surface, making altcrnations on the face or gripe, not so liable to slip as if the edge of the teeth passed entirely across the face of the jaw.v As the screw is turned, the clamp and jaws are carried up, causing the leather to .be drawn with them, thus crimping the same, and giving it the required crimp or shape required in a boot-leg, to tit the instep.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The jaws b b, with serrated or segmental rows of teeth, in straight lines, at right angles to the jaws, as described, and in combination with plate d, and clamp c, screw c, and screw-nut e, constructed and operating as and for the purposes set forth.
