Description

No. 843,962. I PATENTED FEB. 12, 1907.
A. MGMURTRIE.
PLASTER HOLDER FOR OUTLET BOXES. I APPLICATION FILED JUNE 14. 1906.
UNITED snares;
parent? orrien ADNAH MOMURTRIE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS & BETT S '7 COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
PLASTER=HOLDER FOR OUTLET BQXES.
Specification of Letters Patent. 1
Patented Feb. 12, 19 07.
Application filed June 14. 1906- Serial No; 321,616.
To all whom, it may concern: Be it known that I, ADNAH McMURTItIn, of
I New York, N. Y., have invented certain Imgrovements in Plaster-Holders for Outletoxes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings designating like parts.
This invention relates to outlet-boxes or similar members for electrical conduit systems, and has for its object the provision of plaster-holders for such members;
It is especially applicable to boxes made of pressed steel, which are usually smooth, and therefor non-retentive of plaster when cov- 'ered up by plaster in walls of ceilings and in similar situations; but it will be understood that my invention is not limited to use upon boxes of pressed steel.
The various features of my invention will be illustrated and described fully in the accompanying drawings and specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 showsinperspective. a box to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a view, on an enlarged scale, in longitudinal sectionof a plaster-retaining device constructed in accordance with my invention. similar views of modified forms of such devices, Fig. 6 showing in longitudinal section still another modification applied to a box.
In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and description as a convenient form to enable ready and complete understanding of my improvements the reference-numeral 1 designates an outlet-box of the type commonly used for. interior con-- dult systems for'electric wiring, which, with its cover 2 and retaining-screws 3 for the cover, may be and is shown as of well-known plessed-steel construction, the material being considered in this instance as pressed steel merely for illustration.
In accordance with my invention I provide a plaster holder or retaining device 4, secured to the box by the screw 3 and projecting above the cover 2 to such a height as to engage the plaster covering the box after it has been set in the wall, ceiling, &c., and preventing the laster from cracking away from the cover the box.
The devicejl is shown on an enlarged scale (er-holder 14 with a Figs. 3,4, and are screw 3 may be passed. This is asimple and inexpensive form oi the device and may be applied to any existing box.
In Fig. 3 the plaster retaining and attaching portions 4 and 5 are the same as that 11lus traied in Fig. 2, but are permanently secured to the screw 3 by a solder or other extrane ous fastening ma;erial 7.
In Fig. 4 the plaster-retaining portion 8 is formed integrally with the head 9 of the fastelling-screw and provided with a slot 10 In Fig. 5 the body portion 11 has an aperture 12, in which lies the fastening-screw 13, the body and head being vswaged together and held by frictional contact.
In Fig. 1 I have shown at the right-hand lower corner a sli htl -difl'erent form of plasretaining portion 15 to project above the cover, a screw 16 being provided to pass through the shank 14 into the side of the box 1.
In Fig. 6 the plaster-holder 17 has a central aperture 18, threaded to receive the shank of a screw 19, secured by a lock-nut 20 to a lug 21 in the side of the box- 1. The member 17 in this instance serves to hold the cover 2 in place.
Having thus illustrated and described my invention fully and various styles of its embodiment, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the specific forms shown and described nor in general otherwise than as set forth in the claims read in connection with this specification. 3
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y a 1. A plaster-retaining device for electrical outlet-boxes and the like, comprising a plaster-engaging portion, and an attaching portion having fastening means, substantially as described.
2. A plaster-retaining device for electrical outlet-boxes and the like, comprising a body or attaching portion, and a plurality of plaster-engaging wings, substantially as described.
3. A plaster-retaining device for electrical outlet-boxes and the likefcomprising a body member having a threaded attaching portion above saidcover, substantially in the man- 10 to permit said device to be secured removner and for-the purpose set forth.
ably to said box, and a plaster-engaging Signed at New York city, in the county of Wing, substantially as descrlbed. New York and State of New York, this 24th 4. A plaster-retaining device for electrical dayof May, A. D. 1906 outlet-boxes and the like, said device having 1 ADNAH' MOMURTRIEP means to permit its attachment to said box Witnesses:
in position to secure in place the cover of said R. P. HARRISON,
box, and plaster-engaging means to project WM. H. MCCORMICK.
