Description

NO; 843,852. PATENTED FEB. 12, 1907. G. A. STELLER; J11. vFUSE 0R ELECTRIC GUT-OUT.
APPLIGATION FILED MAY 28, 1906.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
CHARLES A. STELLER, JR, or JERSEY CITY, NEW JERsEr.-
Fuss on ELECTREC our-our.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb.'12, 1907.
Application filed May 28,1906. Serial No. 319,192.
To all whom it mlay concern:
' Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. sw rm, I Jr.-, citizenof the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and.
State'of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Fuses or Electric Cut-Outs, ofwhich the following is a specification."
hepresent inventionrelates to an improved fuse or electric cut-out of that typle which are commonly employed u on switc boards, panel-boards, knife-switc es, &c.
The object ,of'theinvention is to-provide a deviceof this character which is extremely.
simple and inex ensivein construction and 1 which is peculiar y designed so that the fuse- 'moved. 2' is..a'longitutlinal sectional wire can be easily replaced without the necessity of providing a new case andterminals.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof "and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and a co mpanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a; pg'spective view of the im--' proved electric cut-out with the cover'review of the same, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line as a: of Fig. 2. 7
Corresponding and like partsare referred toin' the following description and indicated a in allthe views of the'drawings by the same 4 reference characters.
The numeral 1 designatesthe body of the case, which comprises the two ends 2 and .:the opposite sides 3, the iipper and lower edges of the latter projecting slightly beyondthe ends 2 Y At the top" of the case the projecting portions of the sides 3 are formed with the grooves 4, within which the cover 5 is slidab y mounted. At the opposite side of the case the rojecting edges of the sides are. connected by the bottom piece 6, the ends of which do not extend entirely to the end pieces 2 of the case, but are spaced somewhat therefrom. The terminals comprise the shanks 7, which fit against the rear faces of the ends 2, where they are held in position by the screws 14 and the heads 8, l
which project outwardly from oppositeends of the case and are formed with the slots or notches 9 for convenience in attaching the cut-out to the usual binding-posts.' In the present instance the notch 9 at one end of the case is disposed longitudinally with re- .spect thereto, while the notch at the opposite end is dis osed transversely, thus greatly facilitatmgt e operation of removing or placing the cut-out in position. The inner at 10and extend into the case through the inner end s are bent upwardly and inwardly, so that their extremities are completely s1: aced from the inclosin walls of the case. A screw I1 is located at t is extremity of each of the shanks 7 and these screws serve as a means for connecting the. fuse-wire 12, which may be of any suitable size, according to the current which it is desiredtO. carry." lf desirable, plastic'inaterial 13, such as plaster, ofparis, may be placed at the points where the 'fill up any openings which may remain. -When this case has once been placed in \p osition, it"will-be'apparent that when one fuse placed in position by simply s ipping 'the cover 5 from the body portion 1 of the case andloosening the screws 11. i, The .case, includ'ng the body, cover, and
suitable dielectric onirisulatin'g material,
into shape.
is claimed as new ispieces and oppositely-disposed sides, a cover the combination of a case comprising end ends of the shanks 7 are reduced in width shanks 7 enter the case in oner to completely bottom, is preferably constructed of some [1; In a dev ce of the character described, the combination vof av case comprising end oose ly mounted upon the case, a bottom, the ends of which'are spaced from the before 2. In a device of the character described,
spaces left between the bottom piece 6 and t eends 2. Itwill also be observed that these is blown a new fuse can be quickl and easily such as hard rubber, papiermac he, or other material adapted to be pressed or molded Havingthus described thejinventiomiwhat l pieces and oppositely-disposed sides, a cover removably connected to the case, a bottom having the ends thereof spaced from the '1 before-mentioned end pieces of the case, .a
1 pair of terminals, each of which comprises a head and a shank, the shanks being secured to the end pieces ;and extending inwardly withinthe case, while the'heads project outwardly and are provided with means for forming a connection, anda fuse-wire having its ends detachably connected to the inwardly-extending shanks of the terminals.
. I 3. 1n a device of the' characte'r described, the combination of a case comprising'end pieces. and oppositely-disposed sides, a cover detachably connected to the case, a bottom having the ends thereof spaced from the before-mentioned'end pieces'of the case, a
' pair of terminals each of which comprisesa shank and a head, the shanksbeing secured to the' before-mentioned end pieces and project 'ing inwardly within the case, while; the heads project outwardly and 'are provided with means. for forming a connection, plastic -materialplaced at the points where the shanks of the terminals enter the case, and a fuse-wire having its ends detachably connected to the inwardly-extending shanks of the terminals. v
4. "In a 'deviceofthe character described, the combination of a case comprising en'd pieces and oppositely-disposed sides, the lower edges-of the sides projecting somewhat beyond, the end pieces, a removable cover for the case, a pair of terminals each of which comprises a shank and,a head, the shanks being secured to the'end pieces between the before-mentioned outwardly-projecting edges of the sides and extending inwardly within the case, while the heads are provided with means for forming a connection, a bottom for the case, the ends of which are spaced from the before-mentioned end pieces, and a fuse-wire having its ends detachably con nected to the inwardly-extending shanks of the terminals.
5. In a device of the character described} the combination ofa case comprising end pieces and oppositely-disposed sides, the longitudinal edges ofwhich project outwardly beyond the end pieces, a cover slidably mounted between'the outwardly-projecting portions of the sides upon the front of the case, a bottom located between the outwardly-projecting edges of the sides upon the back of the case, the ends of the bottom bein s aced from the before-mentioned end .0 p .n r pieces, a pair of termmals each of which com- .iprises a shank and a head,- the shanks being secured to the end' pieces between the out- 'wardly-projecting edges of the sides and extending within the case where'they are bent upwardly and inwardly and reduced in crosssection, while the heads of the terminals extend outwardly and are provided with means fpr making a connection, and a fuse-wirev having its ends detachably connected to the inwardly-projecting portions of the shanks
