HOUSEHOLD CLEANING APPLIANCE.

Patented Feb. 12, 1907.

Application filed September 7, 1905. Serial No. 277,440.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM B. DUNN,

Jr., and JonN TAYLOR, Jr., citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Household Cleaning Appliances; and wedo hereby de.

clare the fo owing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

lhis invention, which relates to household cleaning appliances, contemplates the production of a simply and inexpensively constructed device of this character. adapted for brushing or dusting the walls and ceilings of rooms, and particularly for cleaning windows both outside and inside, the device to this latter end being provided with a curved handle portion, whereby access to the exterior surfaces of the panes may be readily had while the operator is wholly within the room and at a safe distance from the windowopening.

One of the important features of the invention is a means for rendering the device yieldable, the handle portion including in its preferred form a coiled-wire section, whereby all danger of breaking of the panes by unintentional blows with. the head or by undue pressure is avoided.

The invention in detail is set forth in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The drawings show the improved appliance in its preferred forms of embodiment. In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a household cleaning appliance embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the upper handle portion inverted and connected to a different form of head. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modified form of appliance.

Referringto the drawings by numerals, and first to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 designates a cleaning-head adapted for washing windows. Obviously this head may be a brush, sponge, or the like, and a wiper may be substituted for the finishing operation. The handle'2 is composed of adjustably-connected sections,

1 two being shown but this number may be 5 increased if a longer handle is desired. The

i lower handle-section has a part 3, rcferably irectangular in cross-section, its ower end I being rounded and tightly fitted into one end,

of a curved part 4, preferably formed of coiled wire, the wire being coiled upon itself at the other end to provide a handhold 5. The handle part 3 is equipped with a plurality of straps or loops 6, slidably confining a part 7 of the 11 per handle-section, which to part is also pref rably of rectangular cross section. The parts 3 and 7 are therefore lengthwise adjustable relative to each other,{ whereby to vary the length of the handle, as will be understood, the adjustment being fixed by a set-screw S in one of the straps or loops or by anyother suitable means. The part 7 is rounded at one end and fits closely in one end of a curved part 9, preferably formed of coiled wire, the cleaning-head being fitted in the other end of the coiled-wire part. The opposite end of the part 7 is rounded and maybe tapered to fit the socket of a dust-brush, (see Fig. 2,) the said part being first inverted for the purpose.

The parts 4 and 9 being curved, access to the panes at their outer surfacesis readily afforded, the operator remaining wholly within the room and at a safe distance from the .windowopening. The employment of 0 yielding material for the art 4 or the part 9, or both, renders the wor easier to perform, and there is no danger of broken windows by accidental striking or undue pressure.

Fig. 3 illustrates the device in a modified 5 form, the handle-sections 10 11 being in telescoping relation and secured in adjusted position by a set-screw 12. In this form the upper section 10 has an integrally-bent rigid end portion 13, the yielding function of the 9 handle being obtained by the coiledwire part 14.

We claim as our invention A handle for household cleaning devices eomdprising a plurality of slidably-connected In testimony whereof we afiix our signarigi sections, the upper of said sections betures in presence of two witnesses.

ing reversible and havingdiflerently-shaped WILLIAM B DUNN terminals whereb cleaning devices having L JOHN TAYLOR JR.

differently-shape sockets may be attached thereto, the lower of said sections having a Witnesses:

curved yielding portion terminating into a EDWARD BOYKIN. handhold. A. B. WEBB.
