` A. W. HAGER AND JOHN s. GROVE, OF WAVERLY, IOWA.
Leners Patent No. 84,854, dated November 24, 1868.
DOG-POWER.
* dwf- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of our invention. Figure 2 is a detail plan View ofa portion of the slats. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. This invention relates to machines for utilizing dogs,
- by causing them to drive slight machinery, as churns,
washing-machines, grindstones, and the like.
It consists in the general combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A A A, B B B is the general frame of the machine.
Two inclined pieces of Wood, E, aiiixed to the corner-posts, A, of the frame, afford the bearings for the shafts of the end rollers C C', and the intermediate rollers D. v
TWO of Asuch rollers are` mounted on shafts, a, and support the upper half of the two centre belts, N.-
O O O, Sac., are foot-slats, aixed to the belt, as shown, and are pivoted with 'short end buttons, c, breaking joints with each other, as shown.
The end rollers, O C', are flanged, to retain the belts.
The shaft of the rollers C is provided with a crank, L, to which is connected a rod, K, Working on the crankpin c. This rod is pivoted at d to a Working-beam, I, arranged on the outside of the frame, and pivoted to one ofthe posts A, at b, as shown.
J is a sliding extension on the working-beam, to ad-d just the length of the beam to the desired throw of the churn-dashers, or otherpait ofthe machine being driven.
This extension is formedwitha tongue which slides in a corresponding groove in the beam I, and is provided with a band, P, which slides in the said beam.
Q is another band, aflxed to the beam, through which this extension J slides.
The churn-handle is attached in any suitable manner to the end, R, of the extension J, or ifa grindstone, or washing-machine is to be driven, a connecting-rod, attached at this front crank to the crank of the grindstone or machine.
R are extensible joints, tc adjust the incline of the endlessbelt of slats to the Weight of the dog, a smaller dog requiring a greater incline than a larger one.
G is a brake for stopping the machine, one end of which is pivoted to or on the posts, outside of the frame, in sncha manner that it will bear upon the drive -of the fly-wheel M, on the shaft of the rollers C', and outside of the frame.
H is a sliding weight, to adjust the brake to the power of the dog, a large dog requiring that the weight be farther from the fly-wheel than a small dog.
The weight is formed with a tongue, which slides' in a corresponding groove in the brake-beam G.
Thus, by our invention, We are enabled to utilize the surplus energy of household-dogs, and thereby enable the owners thereof to receive some remuneration for the expense of their support.
The bearings of the endrollers G consist of short pieces S, which are provided with tenons, as shown dotted, which have a slight longitudinal play in slots made in the pieces E. The said pieces S fit in jogs cut in the pieces E, and their ends abut against the shoulders of the said pieces.
f are keys or wedges, inserted between the said ends and shoulders, for the purpose of pushing back the pieces S, and thus tightening the belts.
Ve are aware that a dog-power machine, consisting chiefly of an endless belt of slats, running on rollers arranged upon a frame, is not new, and therefore We do not claim it broadly; but having thus described our invention,
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the extensible working-beam I J, weight H, connecting-rod K, crank L, drums C C', rollers I), adjustable bearings S, and the endless belts, consisting of the transverse slats O, and the pivoted buttons e, arranged to break joints with each other, all operating as described, for the purpose specified.
