HARMON F. LUSHBAUGH AND OSCAR Z. HURD, OF
ELLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 84,291, dated November 24, 1868.
IMPROVED ANIMAL-TRAP.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARMON F. LUSHBAUGH and OSCAR Z. HURD, of Mount Pulaski, Logan county,
' State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improved ADimaIJIrap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in .which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional eleva- Vtion of my invention.
Figure 2 represents a plan of saine, the cover being removed.
Figure 3 represents a detail of my invention7 hereinafter described. l
Similar letters indicate like parts.
It consists of a box A, figs. 1, 2, and 3, of a convenient length and height, having at the top a trapdoor, a, liig. 1, one end' of the box being square and covered with a grating, b, g. 1,1),1),l b2, &c., iig. 2, while knob k, on the end of the shaft, operates the spring by turning the shaft.
To this shaft are tixed rods an, m, fm2, 85e., iig. 1, m,
iig. 2, passing through it, while another rod, o1, figs. 1 i
and 2, passes through the top of the shaft, atrightangles to m, lm-, m2, &c., all tlre/ rods being nearly as long as the width of the box, leaving only space enough between their extremities and sides and cir- :cular end of the box for them to revolve freely A series of rods, o, o', 02, 85e., tig. 1 o, ig.- 2, curved, as shown, is attached to the side of the box, their ends falling between the rods on., m, Ste.
A platform, p, .of the same width as the door c, iigs. 1 and 2, is pivoted at one end, while the other rests on the spring q, figs. 1 and 3, and is connected, bythe 'link j, figs. 2 and 3, with the pawl 1', fig. 3, the pawl lbeing pivoted at s, so that, the end of the rod n. will engage with it, and prevent the shaft B from revolving.
To the sides of the box, at the top, is pivoted a rocks. shaft, E, iigs. 1 and 2, having numerous lance-heads, 1, 2, 3, 4, Ste., attached to it, while 'a similar rockshaft, F, also provided with lance-heads interlacing those on. E, is pivoted at the bottom of the box.
To E is attached a weight, H, figs. 1 and 2.
.A platform, t, gs. l and 2, extending entirely across the box, is pivoted at one end at u, so as to form a continuation of the platform' p, while the other extremity is supported by the link lv attached to the .lever Iw of the rock-shaft E, the rock-shaft F also being connected, by a link, e', to the lever z of the shaft E," The levers and links are seen in tig.'1, and the lever inA fig. 2.
The bait being suspended at g, and the spring wound up by turning the knob k, the pawl preventing it from unwinding, the trap is ready for use. A rat having passed well on to the platform p, depresses it, disengaging the pawl lr, and allowing the shaft to revolve, the rods m, my', m2, &c., strike him and push him into the trap. The ro'ds o, 0, Sto., and m, m, Snc., p'reventing the rat from retreating, he passes on to the platform t, which falling, by means of the links' and levers, opens the lance-points, allowing him to pass through, the lances immediately, by the action of the Weight H, resuming the position shown in tig. 1 effectually preventing the rat from returning. When the pawl is disengaged, the vshaft makes a half revolution till the other end of the rod, engaging with thepawl, sets the trap again. The rats maybe taken out through the trap-door, ,or the grating may be made movable for l this purpose.
The trap being Vonce set, Will continue to act till the spring is unwound or the box is filled. l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination ofthe shaftv B, coil-spring h, rods rmy m1 m2 m3 'm4, o, and wn n n3, platform p, with its springs q, link f, and pawl lr, as and for the purpose speciiied.
2. The combination of the platform t, links 11 and x, levers Iw and z, rock-shafts E and F, with their lanceheads and weight, as and for the purpose specified.
3. An animal-trap, formed by the combination of the part-s hereinbefore described, as and for the purpose specified.
