Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, 1907.
Application filed December 6, 1905. Serial No. 290,470,
- I To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. D. MER- WIN, a citizen of the United statespand a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Starting-Cranks, of which the following is a specification! My invention relates to improvements in starting-cranks, andhas for its object to provide. acrank susceptible of being carried 'only in one direction.
view of the device of my invention applied to an automobi1e motor. Fig.2 isan enlarged perspective view of the device of my invention. ..Fig.' 3 is an enlarged vertical View in mid-section of the same. verse vertical sectionof the ratchet and spring-pawLemployed in my invention, bee ing taken on the line 4 40f Fig. 7. Fig. '5 is a transverse ,v'erticalview 'in' midfsection, taken on the, line 44 of Fig.
lan view of the inner faceof the outer memberemployedinmy inventiong; Fig. 7 isa side elevation of thedevice of my invention. My invention is designed to overcomeyt-he 4" isa transacoidental backward movement of the starting-crank used in automobile-motors and the like, The backwardmovement ofthe starting axle ofsuch motors is frequentl' occasioned by premature sparking and, t e like,
'and such backward movement, when carry- -ing the 'startingrcrank with it, is a frequent cause'of injuryfto the handof the operator. To this-end I have provided the crank8, prober 10, which. is cylindrical in. section. The
inner-face of the member 10- is ratcheted, as
' the outer face of. the member '12, The mom i I c [a ly greater than the thickness of the memindibated in the drawingsby the numeral 11', to occlude theoorresponding depressions on ber 12 is of a diameter corresponding to that of the member and is ratcheted uponitsperiphery, as indicated by the numeral '13, to
engage with" the spring-pawl 14, which is mounted on the member 15. i The pinj16 is lindri'cal in formand of a length considerbers 10 and 12. "The member 10 is rigidlyand concentrically. mounted uponthe pm 16, and-themember 12 is loosely and'axlally mounted upon the said pin '16. The inner face of'the' member 12 is recessed, as 111K117- cated by the numeral 17, and across-pin 18 extends radially through the pin 16 at a I thrust into shaft 19 then throws the 7. Fig. dis a .eted periphery, a spring-lpawl pen point just beyond the inner face of the.mem-' ber 12. The startingeshaft 19 is ratcheted upon two of its sides, asindicated by the numeral 20, and is provided with a-bore21, into which the inner end of the pin 16 is thrust when thest'artingmrank isin use. When pin 16 has thus been the inner end of the place, the occluding ratcheted faces of the members .10 and 12 are in contact, and the cross-pin 18 engaging with the the starting-shaft to beratchets 20 causes revolved in the desired direction to start the starting' shaft of a, motor apertured to receive a crank-pin, a crank by which the crank-pin its caused to. revolve and to drive the starting shaft in the redetermined di- 'motor; In the event offa backward acci-, dental movement of the starting-shaft 19. the spring-pawl 14 engages with one of the- (indi'cated by 13,) causingthe memrection; the-remainder; o the mechanism providing means whereby when the startingshaft. itself is caused to a direction 0 posite to they desired and pre-' determined ireotionby any accidentalcir cumstances the crank -pin willbecome disengaged from the aperture in the .starting'- shaft;-'so-that the crank willnot be carried backward by the backward-revolution of the starting-shaft.
I-lavingthus describedmy invention, what claimia's new, and desire to havesecured to .me by the grant'of Letters Patent, is
1. In adevice 'ofthe class described, av crank, a-pin carried-by the crank, an outer member mounted on the pin and having a; ratcheted innerface, an inner member loosely rotate backwardly in' mounted on the *pin' and having a ratcheted outer face, a recessed inner. face and 'aratchadapted to engage with said'ratchete hery, 'a-starting-shaft adapted to receive t e inner end of the pin and ratcheted on'its outer face, and
a cross-pin mounted radially throirghf-the former-named pin and adapted to? engage withthe outer ratcheted face of'the startingvolved .in the opposite directi'cn, substan- I adapted to engage-with the ratche-tedf'aceof.
