IMPRVEMIEINT IN MOULDING-MACHINERY.'
To all whom it may conce/m.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. HonnoBrN, of the town and county of Bennington, in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inMoulding-Machinery, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top'view of a moulding-machine, embracing my improvements, and

Figure 3 represents a view in elevation of one of the arms which support the reversible follow-board; to which the patterns are attached, showing the devices for locking the followboard and asks in position.

My invention 'relates to that class of moulding-machines in which the pattern is automatically separated from the mould; of which class myformer patent, of February,28, 1 865, is a representative; and the object of my invention is to provide means whereby the mould automatically maybe' separated from the pattern, to inspect it, and correct any defects, and the parts of the ask again be united, and caused to register truly.
The improvements herein claimed consist- First, ina novel method of combining in a mouldingmachine a reversible follow-board with a horizontallymoving mould-carriage, whereby either section of the dasl. may be removed from the follow-board, as deslre Second, in a novel method of combining in a moulding-machine a reversible follow-board, and detachable moulds with locking-devices to hold the moulds upon the board while being reversed.
In order to carry out the objects of my invention, I
mount upon a strong frame a bed-plate or carriage, to which a horizontal movement is given in either direcf tion by suitable mechanism. Afollow-board is mounted in suitable journals in a frame, :movedup or down, at the willof the workman, by suitable mechanism. Patterns may be attached toeach side of this follow-board, `which can be revolved on its axis. The flask is placed on the fo1low-board,and the sand rammed in the usual way. A cover is then clamped on the ilask, the follow-board and iiask are raised, turned upside down, and then lowered upon the sliding carriage. Another flask m'ay be placed on the upper side or the followboard, and rammedas before.
When the workman wishes to inspect the mould, he
' raises the follow-board far enough to lift the pattern above the mould, and runs the flask out from beneathV the follow-board, in order to correct any defects in the mould. When his examination is completed, the mould may be run back under the follow-board. The parts are made to register accurately, and are locked in their proper positions by suitable stops.

A follow-board,-E, has large studs, e, in its ends, mounted in bearings, f, in arms F, which move vertically endwise in suitable guides on the frame. These arms and the follow-board are raised or lowered by'v lmeans of racks g, into which pinions G, on each end of a horizontal shaft, y', take. rEhis shaft is rotated by a hand-wheel, G', or other suitable' device. The arms are held at any desired height by a pawl, h,which takes-into a ratchet on the shaft g', and prevents it from running backwards. A link-rod, h, connects this pawl with a treadle, H, held up by a spring, h2, attached to the frame, which spring tends to keep the pawl engaged with the ratchet, but the workman can release `a thumb-bolt, t'.

A flask, K, of any proper well-known construction,
is placed upon the follow-board, and' fastened by these screws. Patterns and flasks may be secured to each side of the follow-board. The liask, if heavy, may
-be fastened to the follow-board by vertical bolts and wedges.
When the flask K has been packed with sand, in
the usual way, the cope L is put on, and locked by hasps Z on it, which hook over staples lo on the flask.
The follow-board and mould maythen be raised high enough above the carriage C to allow them to be revolved half round;- the mould is then lowered upon the carriage G, and the flask released om the follow-board by unscrewing the bolts J. The follow-board is thenraised again, thus removing the pattern om the mould,I which is run out from beneath it by the carriage O, and inspected by the workman. In case of any defect in the mould, the flask is again run in, and the follow-board lowered. upon it, the accurate register of the parts being secured by the screws J.
The range of motion of the carriage is limited by suitable stops,.which abut against the frame when the carriage has reached the end of its traverse in either direction.
I- am aware that Whitels .English patent, No. 106, of 1858, shows a horizontally-moving carriage, in coinbination with vertical raunners, and do not therefore broadly claim, under this application, a horizontallymoving mould-carriage.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. The combination, substantially as described, of
the reversible follow-board with the sliding carriage C, for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the flask with the reversible follow-board and the clamping-screws J, as and for the purpose set forth.
