To on whom it nwty concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. D. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsboro, in the county of Jefferson 'and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversing-Gear and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to reversing-gear for steam-engines; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the reversinggear. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the reversing-gear. Fig. 3 is an end view of the reversing-gear.
A is the driving-sh aft of the engine, and B is a guide-block rigidly secured to the said shaft by a screw 1) or other approved fastening device.
0 are two adjustable guide-plates secured to the guide-block. D are adjusting-strips between the said plates and the guide-block, and d are slots in the said plates. E are the screws which pass through the said slots and engage with the block.
F is an eccentric provided upon one side with a block having guide-grooves The block abuts against the guide-block B, and its grooves engage with the inturned edges 0 of the guide-plates C. The eccentric is provided with a hole or opening 9 to clear the shaft, and it has a slot G on one side of this hole.
H is an inclinedoperating-plate which is slidable in the slot G and provided with lugs h, which extend partly around the shaft and which form bearings which slide upon the said shaft.
I is a bar which projects from one end of the inclined operating-plate and which is slidable in a slot in the guide-block B.
J is a collar secured to the projecting end portion of the bar I and encircling the shaft A. The collar J is provided with a circumferential rib j, and K is a collar which engages with the said rib and which is provided with projecting pins 7c for the reversingslever .to engage with in the usual manner.
When the parts are in the positions shown in the drawings, the slide-valve of the engine is moved in one direction by means of the eccentric. When the collar J is slid longitudinally upon the shaft by means of the reversing-lever, the inclined operating-plate moves the eccentric crosswise of the shaft A and places it in a position suitable for moving the slide-valve in the opposite direction, and the engine is consequently reversed.
The guide-block B has a cylindrical projection I) on it, which can be used as a pulley to drive the belt of a speed-governor.
What I claim is 1. In a reversing-gear, the combination, with a shaft, and a guideblock secured thereto and provided with guide-plates,- of an eccentric provided with a grooved block which is slidable on the said plates and against the end of the said guide-block, said eccentric having also an opening to clear the said shaft and a slot at one side of the said opening, and an inclined operating-plate slidable in the said slot and provided with a projecting bar for moving it back and forth, said plate having also guide-lugs which project from one side of it and which slide upon the said shaft.
2. In a reversing-gear, the combination, with a shaft, a guide-block secured to the said shaft, and guide-plates provided with inturned end portions and adjustably connected to the said guide-block; of an eccentric provided with a grooved block which engages with the inturned end portions of the said guide-plates and which abuts against the said guide-block, said eccentric having also an opening to clear the said shaft and a slot on one side of the said opening, and an inclined operating-plate slidable in the said slot and provided with a projecting bar for moving it back and forth, said plate having also guidelugs which project from one side of it and which slide upon the said shaft.
3. In a reversing-gear, the combination, with a shaft, and a guide-block secured thereto of an eccentric operatively connected with the said block and slidable crosswise of the said shaft, said eccentric having also an opening to clear the said shaft and a slot on one side of the said opening, and an inclined reversing-plate slidable in. the said slot and having guide-lugs which project from one side of it into the said opening and which engage with and slide upon the said shaft.
