Description

- Seu-ita ama JOSEPH CHARLEVILLE, OF ST. LOUIS COUNTY, ,MISSOURL Laws Patent No. 84,260', dated Novanta 24, 186s.
IMPROVED STEP-LADDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH CHARLEVILLE, of the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Step-Ladders andI do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature'of this invention is in the adaptation, to
lan ordinary step-ladder, of a top seat or foot-board, in
such wise that the same may be easily adjusted and secured or removed.
To enable those skilled herein to make and use my said ladder, I will now` fully describe the same, referring to the accompanying Figure l as a sectional elevation of the ladder, with the foot-board secured thereon; to
Figure 2 as a plan of 'the foot-board when disconnected from the ladder; to
Figure 3 as a det-ail elevation of the tenon-end of the step-ladder rail or bar. Y
I construct the step-ladder, A, generally in the usual form, and of the usual materials.
Said ladder has therails or side bars a, and the rounds or steps b, and the said rails a are connected, by the journal c, withthe brace d. y g
A simple rope, e, may be used, as in other similar ladders, to prevent the rails and bracesfrom spreading unduly.
The parts thus described are known to me to be in common use, and I do hereby expressly disclaim any or all of said parts as my invention.,
My improvements, however, consist in adding to said ladder A the foot or seat-board B,'and for this purpose I arrange the upper end of the rails a with the tenons j, as shown in fig. 3.
To correspond with said tenons f, I cut the mortises gin the seat-board B, thereby permitting the board B to be easily adjustedon the upper end of the rails at.
In order to further secure and brace the said `seat-` boards, so that the same shall not tip when' bearing the weight of a man, I secure, to thebottom side of the seat-board B, the brace-arm G, in a permanent manner.-
Said arm G curves forward, and abuts on and against the round or step b, thus supporting the rear end of the seat-board. It will be seen that the manner now described of securing the seat-board. B upon the rails c is firm and strong, and at the same time it may be easily disconnected when not needed, and the person using the lad der is then relieved of the labor of carrying a ladder made heavier by the said board B.
Having thus fully described my invention,
The rail a, its tenonl f, in combination with the mortise g of the seat-board B, and the brace G, and step or round, b, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand, in presence of- JOSEPH CHARLEVILLE. Witnesses:
