Be it known that l, JOHNL. BULLooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hester, in-the county of Granville and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful lm rovemen ts in Tob aoco-Curing Apparatus, o which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in furnaces or heaters for drying apparatus, and

, more particularly for tobacco-curing houses.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical knockdown or sectional furnace which may be readily adapted for use in tobacco-curing houses or the like of different sizes.

These sections are arranged in longitudinal alinement with each other, with their adjacent ends telescoping or overlapping, so as to form a continuous fire-box. Each of-the sections consists of two rectangular side plates 9, having apertures located adjacent to their upper edges, and atop plate 6, also of rectangular form, with longitudinallyextending flanges 7 depending from its side edges. The flanges 7 are arranged at right angles to the top plate 6 and are also formed at suitable points with apertures which register with the apertures in the side plates to receive transverse fastening-bolts 8. The top plates are exposed to the direct contact of the flames from the fire in the furnace, and I preferably make them thicker than the side plates in order to prolong the life of the furnace. One end of rectangular side plates the section 3 extends through a suitable opening in one of the walls of the housing 1 and is closed by a suitable door 10. The fuel is inserted in the fire-box through this outer end of the section 3. The section 5 has its outer end closed by a cap or end plate 12, which has on three of its sides right-angularly-projecting ianges adapted to-engage the outer faces of the top and side plates of the section 5 and to be secured thereto by bolts or other suitable fastenings.y A thimble 13 projects from the end plate 12 and is telescoped byone end of a horizontally-arranged flue 14, the other end of which is connected to a-vertical flue 1 5. The latter has its upper end connected to one end of a flue 16, which extends around the housing 1, and has at its opposite end an outlet-flue 17 projecting outside of Y the housing.

By constructing the furnace as above described it will be seen that it may be quickly and easily set up or taken down, and when taken apart it may be packed in a small space for shipment or storage. By making it of a plurality of telescoping sections a greater or less number of them may be employed, according to the size of the house or shed to be heated, so that the proper temperature may be readily maintained in the latter.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A furnace of the character described, comprising a plurality of knockdown sections arranged in end-to-end alinement with their adjacent ends telescoping or overlapping, each of said sections comprising side plates, top plates, and detachable fastenings connecting said top and side plates, a door closing the outer end of one of the endmost sections, and a cap or end plate closing the outer end of the other endmost section and provided with a thimble for the reception of a smoke-flue.
