Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
Application filed April 16,1906. Serial No. 311,946.
Means and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart'to which-it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a frictiondriveparticularly adapted for automobiles to produce variable-speed gearing between the motor and the driveshaft of the vehicle in either direction Without varying the speed of the motor or reversing the same, the object of my invention being to provide a drive of this kind in which the pressure on the bearings of the crank shaft of the motor is balanced, thus avoiding the excessive friction and rapid cutting out of the parts subjected to wear, with the use of friction-gearing now generall employed; and it consists in the features 0 construction and combinations of arts hereinafter fully described and claimed In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, F1gure 1 is a plan view of a friction-drive constructed in accordance with my invention. a Fig. 2 is a side elevatlon of the same. perspective ,view. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail section, on an enlarged scale, on the line 4 4 of Fig 3. In sai drawings, A indicates the crankshaft, driven by the motor. At its 0 posite free ends said shaft A carries disks from which counter-shafts C, disposed parallel with each other, are driven, The latter are journaled in bearings D, movably disposed on the cross-bars E of the frame, as herein after described, and are suitably held against longi tudinal movement therein. On each of said shafts a friction-disk F is mounted, the latter being longitudinally movable thereon, but
held against revoluble movement relatively thereto in any suitable manner, preferably by means oi a longitudinal groove G in said shaft C, into-which a projection disposed on the hub of. said .disk extends. The hub of each of said disks F is provided with an annular groove H, which is adapted to be en- ;is moved in one direction. preferably held against rotation relatively to Fig. 3 is afragmentary detail both plungers J, carried by vbearings l) of said counter s aft gaged by suitable devices for imparting longitudin al movement to said disk, such means being common, and therefore omitted from illustration. The said bearirgs D are laterally movable and each of same carries a plunger J, which latter enters a sleeve K, disposed on a bracket Ii, mounted on each of the end portions of said cross-bars E, said plunger having a reduced free end and bein provided with a collar M, between which an an annular shoulder N, disposed in said sleeve K, a spring 0 is disposed,;which latter normally maintains said plunger J and said bearings D at the outer limits of their movement. The extreme free end of saidplunger J is inclined in order to form a cam-face P.
Longitudinally movable in bearings K,
disposed upon the outer free ends of the the otl: er face inclined and said inclined face being adapted to engage the cam-face l? of said plunger J to force the same inwardly against the axis of said spring when said rod The said rod Q is said bearing L. The said rods Q are disposed' parallel with said counter-shaft O, and
each rod passes through two of said bearings L and is adapted tosimultaneously engage the adjacent The said rods Q are moved simultaneously, thereby bearings D relatively to'said cross-bars E and forcing said disks F into peripheral contact with the duter facesof said disks B with greater or less pressure, as desired, the sprin s 0 serving only to normally maintain said, isks F out of peripheral contact with said .disks B. Any suitable means for simultaneously imparting longitudinal movement to said rods Q and to said disks F may be provided but I have omitted illustration of such means as appliedf to said disks F, as I deem it unnecessary to go into needless detail, as this will berea'dily understood by any person skilled in the art: By imparting s1- multaneous movement to said rods Q by means of the rock-shaft S, journaled in the side bars T of the frame and likewise to the disks F when it is required to vary the speed- '-simultaneously shifting the positions of said gearing or reverse the same, the pressure and strains on said crank-shaft A are equalized, and the bearingsthereof are obviously entirely relieved of any strain due to the pres sure exerted by saiddisks F on said disks B. I am thus enabled to apply great pressure upon said disks B, and thus noduce the frietion necessary to transmit t e power of the motor to, the drive-gear of the vehicle or ings or other source of trouble. thus render ing my drive particularly adapted of automobiles.
Iolaim as myinvention-"- x 1. A friction-drive for transmitting power, comprising a main shaft geared to a source of power, disks rigidly mounted on the ends thereof, a eounter shaft disposedadjacent to to the uses 1 and outwardly of each of said disks, hearings i m which said counter-shafts are ]()lllflfll(3(l at both ends, supports on Walsh said bearings are movably disposed, means disposed in operativ-e relation to all of said hearings to simultaneously impart movement thereto toward and away from tlie ends of said main shaft, and disks disposed on said 'countershaft and adapted to be maintained in peripheral contact with the outer faces of said first-na1ned disks.
" 2. A. friction-drive for transmitting power comprising a main snal' t geared to a source 0 power, disks rigidly mounted on the ends thereof, a counter-sh aft disposed adjaoent to and outwardly of each of said disks, bearings in which sail oounter siial'ts are journaled,
3 disks on said "counter-shaft, supports on other machine without danger of hot bean.
which said journals are movably disposed, springs disposed 1n operative relation to .e'y'aid hearings to maintain the same normallyiat the outer limits of their movements, and moans disposed in operative relation to said bearings for simultaneously moving the same against t1". e action of said springs thereby imparting lateral movement to said shafts to force the disks thereon int-o peripheral con tent Wit-11 the outer faces of said disks on said main shaft.
