Be it ltnown that liften 11a iirinnison 'Connn'r'iy of iortlai l., ititilnioinaii county, Urogon, have invented certain non' and uselul liniirovenients in Logging-Engines, oli which the following is speeiiention. l
.ln logging-engines as usually constructed two winding-drums are employed, one ior the matin or hziuling cable and the other lor the,
trip-line, which is ettnched .at-one end to the hauling/sable, for the purpose ol dragging it bank into the woods alter s. log hauled to the eng. e. The innin drinn, or the one on .if'nieh the werking estilo is wenn d, should have reat poner and be operated nt i, eoinparativey slow speed, while the nuxiliai y or 'trip line drum, having -no other lunetion than that oi'" dragging the hanlingwahle linut: into the woods, hws power, hut. should he capable of l'iigh speed to insurithe quiet; return of' the linnlingnil le nud 'l'aoilitate the drnwing in oi the logs. lt. is undesirable in obtaining the de." rat io ol' speed between the mein end e to. usen veri," large genr on. tlnzine..l t drinn with a sniall barrelv on ol the enhle, it np the auxiliary drum to the t or hauling ont thel trip-line and z de n drnin ot snilieient eepneity to tn f the trip-line, which e' vionsly iii-.ust he `4man ilo the length ol the, hauling-cable.
For the puriose l obtaining the desired of speed hetween the two drunis withe out increasing their dinnieter to an oltieetionthle degree various systems ol' eonipnnnd have been devised, which have generally been effet-,tive ns hir as regulating the speed of the drnnis is eoin'erued, lint have beenobjeetional)le on aeeonnt ot' the drunis operating in opposite direi-'ions and eoiling at least one ottheoablestroni the underside--Y n method whieli in nn appuiratus ot' this hind is very undesirable, as it necessitates tht` raising ol the drum in the trnine, causing a tendweakness, and iu ense 0l zt shit-.lt line nllows the cable tojdrag on other parts oll the inaohine. 'l`he gipsy head or wineh employed l'or supplenientary work should be mounted to overwiud its eoinparntiwi)Y small cable and he operated rapidly. 'llnIl overwinding oll the line vhas heen obtained by i inunting the wint-,h on the shatt ot the innin drum l; but the sneed .ot this shaft is too slow vl'or the work o the wine-h and hns nn excess oi' poner.
has heen i i i l l l i l i i i i l The objects, therefore, ot' my invention are to provide n logging-engine having main and auxiliary drums between which the desired ratio ol speed is obtained. without running into very large di nineters.
A ll'urther object is to provide drums operating in the saniedireetion and permitting their eahles to be wound over instead of under theni and the gipsy-wineh to be located on the high-speed-dru1n Shaft.
A further ohjeet is to place the drums as low its possible .in the traine, making the appli ent ion ol lall strains direet and overcoming the ohjeetionable leatnres ot' the ordinary niethod ol eonipound gearing without increasing the eost ol' construction.
'.llhe invention consists generally in various,
:constructions and combinations, Lall as hereinafter' described, and particularly pointed ont in 'the elainis.
ln the aeeonii'ianying drawings, lorining part ol" this speeitieation, Figure l is a pla-n view ot a logging-engine, the niain and auxiliar)r drums embodying niy invention being illustrated iu horizontal set-tion. Fig. 2 is a seetional `view on the line a' .r ol' Fig. 1., and Fig. l is a side ele\fation. v
ln the drawings, 2 represents a. suitable base or traine whereon n shalt 3 is journaled and operated troni the engines 4 in the usual nianner. 5 is a pinion keyed on the shaft 3 find meshing with a gear (i, secured on a shalt 7, hnving benriugs S on one side ol' said 'traine and on a bar t), extending lengthwise ol' said t`rni-ne,near the niiddle thereol". A elutehshoe l() ot' suitahle ninteriahsiieh. as woo'd,is seein-ed to the gear and has a wedge-shaped lare to enter a soeket l1, l'ornied on the head l2 ot n drinn 13, whieh is loosely mounted on said shalt 7 and is adapted to slide into engagei'nent with said eluteh-shoe, but norinally is held out ol eontaet therewith by a spring lil, eoiled about the said shalt be-- .iti ol'- gear G thereon. Allange in is provided on the head i7 at the opposite end ot' the drinn to reeeive a bi-alui-strap it), eonnerted with a shatt 2t), that `is roeked by a. lreadle 2l, loented within eonvenient rezu'h olv the operator. 'lhe druni is moved lengthwise 'on the shnl't to leek the l`ri t ion-eluteh by rotating a loosely-n1ounted toothed sleeve in engagement with a tixed toothed ring said sleeve hein-g operated lby a lever 21 o r other suitable means.
druni i3 is designed for winding up vthe trip-V line and hauhng the nnun drum-fiable beek The,l

The ring 32 ie rotated byeny suit-able means, :is the lever 36, and when operated the drum. 2? will he moved to- Ward the .internal gear end locked thereon. This dru1n2'7 .l designate :is the mein or cable-hauling drum sind provided with n Suitable enhle overwonnd thereon 'und hy memie ot' whichv the logs nre dragged into the engine, The drum. operntes :it u companiotively slow speed; hut its hnrrol is of greater diiinieter thun the drum 1.3, und it has greet power, hoth eherwterfitirs heilig` eef,`
compact end durable construction, and 'eee-h drum. will have eilI the characteristics re quired, according to the Work to be 'performed by it. The met-in. drum operating the heulingn eaole will. have greet ower and oomperetively slow speed, while t .e tri -line drum', being used merely for pulling the sull# ing-(zahle hook into the woods, will have less power, hut e high speed., and the gipsyfhead, beingfueed for light` Work around the engi-ne, will have practically the Seine olielreeteristi-es the lngh-speed drum env/hose Shaft it is mounted.
