Description
PATENTED JAN. 8, 1907.
A. SPECHT.
FASTENING FOR CHAINS. AP I0 ADOLPH SPECHT, OF POSEN, GERMANY.
FASTENING FOR CHAINS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
Application filed May 15,11906- Serial No. 317,034:-
To Ml whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADoLrH Srnonr, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of Rennplatz,,Posen, in the German Em ire, ihaveiinvented certain new and useful mprovements in Fastenings for Chains, of which the following is an exact specification.
This invention relates to fastenings for chains such as are used for the chaining up of horses, cattle, and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide means by which unintentional uncoupling is avoided. The s ecial kind of chain-fastenings to which the present invention refers consists of a U-shaped bow to which a twoarmed lever, called toggle, is pivoted, the arms of which are of different lengths.
The bow is fastened to one end link of the chain, and the other end of the chain has a link the opening of which is as large as to enable it to pass over the toggle.
In order to prevent unintentional uncoup ling, the shorter arm of the toggle bears a stud which is able to abut against the bow,
and thereby prevents the shorter end of the toggle from entering into the bow and getting flush with it. This stud has only such a size that it is possible bypressure (moving the toggle by hand) to force the stud into and through the bow.
Instead of using a stud on one side of the shorter arm of the toggle two studs, one at each side, may be used. The studs may be formed by the head or the heads of a rivet, by a pin or pins, or by a lug or lugs.
In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters denote similar parts throughout the different. views, and in which Figure 1 shows the chain-fastening in front elevation. Fig. 2 shows the same in the position for coupling or uncoupling. Fig. 3 shows the fastening in the position after coupling. Fig. 4 is an upper view of thefastenmg.
To the U-shaped bow d is pivoted at z a toggle with a longer arm a and a shorter arm I), which bears a stop 0. As to be seen from Fig. 2, the bow 01 1s connected to one end of the chain, while the other end of the chain bears a link g with an ear f. The shorter arm I) of the toggle is provided with studs e e, one on each side.
For effecting the coupling (see Fig. 2) the link 9 of the chain y is )assed over" the toggle, which then has to be rought into the flush position shown in Fig. 2. The ear slides over the toggle and the bow, and then the toggle is brought into the osition of Fig. 3, whereby the cou ling of the chain is finished.
The studs 6 prevent the shorter arm I) of the toggle from entering into the bow d, so
that the ear f of the link gcannot re ass over the toggle.- By means of such stu or studs 6 an entirely safe fastening is created and an unintentional uncoupling is avoided. In case it is intended to uncouple the chain the toggle is gras ed at its end a, and the stud or studs are 'orced through the bow, so
that toggle and bow get into the respective position shown in Fig. 2. This position can e obtained even in case the cattle pulls on thechain.
I am well aware that chain-fastenings consisting of a toggle and a bow are already known; but my invention especially consists in providing a stud or studs on the shorter arm of the toggle, as described above, thereby preventing unintentional uncoupling.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Chain fastening, consisting of a U- shaped bow and a toggle pivoted thereto, the shorter arm of which bears a lateral stud for frictionally engaging the inner side of the bow for the purpose of preventing accidental uncoupling.
2. Chain-fastening, shaped bow and a toggle pivoted thereto, the shorter arm of which bears a lateral stud on each side for frictionally engaging the inner sides of the bow for the purpose of preventing accidental uncou ling.
In witness whereo I have hereunto set my of two witnesses.
