Be it known that I, WARREN H. TAYLOR, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe-Bolt Mechanism and Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in safe-bolt mechanism and lock and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described,- and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a section of the rear face of a safe-door, showing the lock and the slide for actuating the safe-door bolts. Fig. 2 is an end view of same, showing the inner and outer plates of the door with the lock and slide on the rear plate. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the face-plate of the lock removed and showing the safe-bolts-actuating slide .in its retracted position, and Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the slide dogged by the lock-bolt.
1 represents a section of the outer plate of a safe-door, and 2 a corresponding section of the inner plate, the two plates being separated the thickness of the door. Located between the plates are the tubes 3 and 4, through which the spindle of the dial 5 and spindle of the handle 6 pass. The spindle of the dial 5 is connected in the usual manner with a series of tumblers 7, mounted within the cylindrical chamber 8 at the rear end of the lock-casing 9. These tumblers are actuated in the usual manner, and each is provided with a gate 10 to receive one end of the pivoted fence 11. Mounted on the spindle of the dial behind the tumblers is the pinion 12, which meshes with pinion 13, whose axis is coincident with the axis of the fence 11. This pinion 13 and fence 11 are mounted on a hollow sleeve, the ends of which are upset so as to lock the parts thereon, and the sleeve is secured to the lockcasing 9 by the screw 9 There is sufficient frictional contact between the pinion and fence to cause the latter to be moved by the pinion into the gates in the several tumblers as-the dial is turned in a direction to move the lock-bolt 14 out of the path of movement of the safe-bolts-actuating slide 15. This fence 11 is, in effect, a centrally-pivoted lever one member of which rests adjacent to the peripheries of the several tumblers, while the other end rests within a recess 14 in the lockbolt 14. This lock-bolt 14 is slotted centrally for the passage of the screw 9*, and is cut away on its outer face on its side adjacent to the tumblers to permit of the free rocking movement of the fence. The bolt 14 is rectangular in shape and is mounted in the rec-' tangular-shaped end 16 of the casing 9, is confined wholly and at all times within the casing, and instead of moving lengthwise the casing it moves vertically, or in the direction of the width of the casing. The rectangular section 16 of the lock-casing is provided on its outer end near its upper edge with an opening 17, through which the toe 18 of the safe-bolts'actuating slide passes. When the lock-bolt 14 is in its lowest position, there is ample room above the same for the entrance of the toe 18 of the slide 15 but when the bolt 18 is shifted by the fence to its uppermost position the bolt prevents the toe 18 from entering the lock-casing, and thus holds the safe-bolts in their locked positions. The safe-bolts-actuating slide 15 is slidingly mounted on screws carried on the rear plate of the door and is connected to the safe bolt or bolts (not shown) in any approved manner. In addition to the toe 18 this slide is also provided with the parallel shoulders 19, between which the rounded head of the crank 20 rests. This crank is connected to the spindle of handle 6 and operates to shift the slide longitudinally and also the bolt or bolts actuated thereby.
When the lock-bolt is in its lowered position, the handle 6 can be freely turned to throw or retract the safe-bolts through the slide 15. When, however, the safe-bolts are thrown to a locked position and the lock-bolt 14 moved to dog the safe-boltc-actuating slide 15, the latter cannot be moved until the tumblers have been properly set to permit of the entrance of the end of the fence 11 into the gates 10 of the tumblers 7. When the bolt 14 is elevated, the weight thereof resting on one end of the fence holds the other end of the fence against the peripheries of the tumblers and in a position to enter the gates of the latter the instant all of the gates are brought into alinement with each other and with the adjacent end of the fence. With the parts in their normal positions, with the safe-bolts retracted, the lock-bolt 14 rests in its lowermost position, ample space being left above same for the entrance of the toe 18 of the slide. When the parts are in this position, the fence rests with its members approximately horizontal, with one member resting in the gates in the tumblers and. the other in the recess 14 in the bolt 14. When the parts are in these positions, the safebolts can be freely thrown to a locked position and retracted without any interference from the lock. When it is desired to lock the door, the dial 5 should be turned to the left.
is movement of the dial rotates the tumblers and forces the end of the fence 1] out of said gates and necessarily turns the fence on its pivotal screw 9. This movement of the fence elevates the bolt 14 to a position behind the toe 18 of the slide 15, and thus locks or dogs the slide, the bolt being so held by the engagement of one end of the fence with the peripheries of the tumblers. When the dial 5 is again turned to bring the several gates 10 into alinement with each other and with the adjacent end of the fence 11, the end of the fence will be moved by the weight of the bolt 14 into the gates, thus permitting the bolt to drop. This leaves the upper end. of the rectangular case 16 free for the entrance of the toe 18 of the slide 15, thus leaving the safe- (liolts free to be retracted by turning the han- 'le 6.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts herein shown and. described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine'myself to the exact construction'and arrangement of parts herein shown and described but,
Having fully described my invent1on,what I clann as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. In. bolt-operating mechanism, the combination with a loclecasing and a sliding bolt therein, of a series of tumblers, a pivoted fence intermediate the tumblers and bolt, and connected to the latter, and devices actuated by the rotation'of the tumblers whereby one end of the fence is moved into the gatings in the tumblerswhen the gatings are brought into alinement with the adjacent end of the fence.
2. In bolt-operating mechanism, the combination with a lock-casing and a sliding bolt therein, of a series of tumblers, a device rotating with the tumblers and a pivoted fence connected with the bolt and. having frictional contact with said rotating device, whereby a rotation of the tumblers also tends to turn the fence.
3. The combination with a lock-casing a movable bolt withinsaid casing, a pivoted fence engaging the bolt for moving same, and a series of tumblers for moving the fence in a direction to shift the bolt to its locking position, of a pinion connected with the tumblers so as to turn .therewith a second pinion meshing with said first-mentioned pinion and having frictional contact with the fence.
