Be it known that I,-GUsTAv DIEZEMANN,
` of West Hoboken, Hudson county, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain cient,r and thoroughly reliable apparatusy which may be easily applied to a vehicle intermediate its body portion and springs and -I so regulated in` relation to the weight of the vehicle in order that the shock produced When the Wheels encounter an obstruction or denressionlin the road and the consequent tion will be entire y overcome, theaction of the car over the road rendered smooth and free from all sudden jolt or undue vibration,
` and, nally, the tractive power of the wheel and the speed of thecar materially increased.
To the attainment of these ends my inven# tion consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and
arran ement of parts hereinafter more fully descri ed, and then pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals ofreference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a vehicle-.body and a lspring with a suspension device constructed according to and embodying my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enfarged detail side view of the suspension device, showing the same attached to the body and spring; and Fig. Sis a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. .2.

In order to prevent the rotation of the annular packings, the same are provided in their edges Withrecesses 25 and screws 0r pins 26, which extend throughthe barrels 13 13'into said recesses, and* thushold the same duly in position.

It is to be noted that-in my improved construction I provide a plurality of frictionbearings, which may be increased by incor-f porating into the structure any number of removable heads, such as 18 47, and the yfrictional engagement of the fixed and removable heads so regulated as to eect the requisite or desired degree of retardation by turning the caps 21 21 more or less, and thereby IOO IIO
increasing or diminishing, as the case may ibe, the degree of frictional contact between the fixed and removable .heads and the fiber packings and the surfaces of the barrels contacting therewith.
It is to be noted that my apparatus is applicable to wheeled vehicles of all descrl tions, and that by its ap lication thereto t e rising and falling of the body upon the axles or running-gear and the consequent compresslon and expansion of the springs will be so retarded as to render the, action of the vehicle smooth and free from all undue jolting or vibration. Y
Without limiting myself to the details of construction, lwhich may be varied within the scope of the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is
1. A sus ension device for vehicles comprising a c'osed casing adapted for securement to la vehicle, a shaft revolubly' sup- 4ported'insaid casing, a head arranged within posed between said shaft and the ,vehicleaxle, substantially as specified.

A suspension device for vehicles comprising a closed casing .adapted for securement to a vehicle, a shaft revolubly' mounted in said casing, heads arranged upon said shaft and revoluble therewith, means adapted to cooperate with said heads to retard the rotation of said shaft, means for maintaining the lretarding means in operative relation,V
and mechanism interposed between said shaft and the vehicle-axle, substantially as specified.
4. A suspension device for vehicles comprising a closed casing adapted for securement to a vehicle, a shaft revolubly mounted in said casing, heads arranged upon said shaft and revoluble therewith, friction material arranged in` contact with said heads and adapted to cooperate therewith to retard the rotation of said shaft, and 'mechanism interposed between said shaft and the vehicleaxle, substantially as specified.
5. A suspension device for vehicles, comprising a closed casing adapted for securement to a vehicle, a shaft revolubly mounted in said casing, heads arranged upon said shaft and revoluble therewith, friction material interposed between said heads and the ends of the casing and adapted to cooperate with said heads to retard the rotation of said shaft, and mechanism interposed between said shaft and the vehicle-axle, substantially as specified.
6. A sus ension-devicefor vehicles coinprising a c osed casing adapted for securement to a vehicle, a shaft revolubly mounted in said casing, heads arranged u on said shaft and revoluble therewith, pac ings arranged independently of said shaft intermediate said heads and the ends of said casing adapted to cooperate with the heads upon the shaft to retard the rotation of said shaft, means for maintaining the adjusted relation of said retarding means, and mechanism inter osed between said shaft and the vehicle-` ax e, substantially asspecified.
7. A suspension device for vehicles, comprising a closed casing vadapted for securement to a vehicle, a shaft revolubly mounted in said casing, means arranged u' on said shaft and adapted to rotate therewrt a part of saidy means being fixed thereon and a part removable, means arranged in contact with said fixed and removable means, and adapted to cooperate therewith to. retard the rotation of said shaft, and mechanism interposed between said shaft and the vehicle-axle, sub- Istantiallyas specified.
8. A sus ension device for vehicles comprising a c osed casingedapted forsecurement to a vehicle, a shaft `revolubly mounted in Vsaid casing, ,means arranged u on said shaft and adapted to rotate therewit a part of said means being fixed thereon and a part removable, means arranged in contact with said fixed and removable means and adapted to cooperate therewith to retard the rotation of said shaft, means adjustably arranged in said casing for sealingthe same.and maintaining said retarding means in operative relation, and mechanism interposed between said shaft and the vehicle-axle, substantially as specified.
9. A suspension device z for vehicles comprising a closed casing adapted lfor .securement to a vehicle, a shaft revolubly mounted in said casing and arranged partly within and partly without the same, means therefor ar-. ranged upon said shaft and adapted to rotate therewith, retarding means in-frictional engagement with the'means arranged upon said shaft and cooperating therewith to im ede the free movement of said shaft, and mec anism interposed between the portion of the shaft without said casing and the vehicleaxle, substantially as specified.
