. UNITED "STATES PATENT, "OF C 4f EDMUND P. KINNE, 0F ALLIANCE, OHIO. ASSIGNOR To MERICKi" sweet FOUNDRIES, OF JERSEY JERSEY.
CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEWV EMERGENCY-KNUCKLE FOR (JAR-COUPLINGS- Be it known that I, EDMUND P. KINNE, a
citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Emergency-Knuckles for Car- Couplings, of which the ollowing is, a speci- My invention relates to car-couplings, and has'for its object to provide an. improved form of emergency-knuckle adapted to be substituted for the usual knuc e or hook in the draw-head of the type known as the Janney couplin either as a substitute for a broken knuo e or hook or for use in cou ling on short curves.
0 this end my invention embodies certain more definitely reference be' ad to the accompanying drawings, in i v%1ich Figure 1 is a top plan view showing to the leftfa coupling of the well-known Janney tylf in the unlocked position and to the rig t .a Janney-type draw-head, having pivknuckle in oted therem my improved emergielncy' place of the ordinary-knuc e or V hook the two couplings being in position for coupling.

being Similar numerals of reference denote correslponding parts in the several views.
11 the sai the reference-numeral drawin 1 indicates the usua Janney type of drawhead, to which is pivoted at 2, in place of the usual coupling-hook, myv improved emergency-knuckle, the same embodying a hook I v portion 3 of a configuration to interlock with the usual coupling-hook 4 of the opposing draw-head 5, a front face 6 of a configuration to conform to the inner face 7 of the jawinthe opposing draw-head 5, an outside face 8 to conform to the horn 9 of the opposin drawhead 5, an elongated shank 10,. which forms the point of pivotal connection with: the

Said emergency-knuckle is provided w th the usual pin-receiving apertures 12 and slot 13 in its hook for use with the ordinary pinpreferably cored out quite free y, as seen in lug. 3, a pillar or post 14 being provided at the intersection of the-faces 6 and 8 to actv as a buffer and to this point. It is also formed with a central rib 15 along the face 8 and shank 10, in which is formed a handheld, (shown at 16 in'dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 j By referring to Fig. 4 it will be seen that the. hole 17 in the emergency-knuckle receiving the pivot-pin 2 isslightly inclined take the wear, which'comes principally at ,.60
rearward from top to bottom, Wh10h"80i 18 to prevent the emer ency-knuckle from drop ping excessively w en used with a in 2 that- IS considerabl smaller than said ole 17.
From the a ove-description it will be's'een that said emergency-knuckle, while embbilypractically only a hook, will substanti 'y iii? the receivin -a erture in the o posing.
draw-head 5, an w e requiring no ocking-.
pin'or other form of locking device will not uncouple when once engaged by the hook of the opposin coupling even on the sharpest, curves, this eing due mainly to the fact that said emergency-knuckle is ivoted to lie outanney-type coupling-hookmustbe pivotedin order to disen gage itself from the opposing hook when re eased by thelocking device; My emergency-knuckle is free to turn, but cannot turn far enough to uncouple, because its pivot-point 21's located so far back of the hook portion 3-.that even on. the sharpest .curves theangle between the two couplings will not be acute enough to allow v gency-knuckle to turn sufiicient to uncouple. This operation is assisted' y the fact that said emer substantially said emerl the receivi -apertu're in the ency-knuckle is of a shape to:
op os' Janney-ty e coup mg or, as it is tec hni fily known, tl ie Master Oar-Builders" contour. Furthermore, the fact that my emer ency-knuckle is pivoted and is free to turn aterally in its draw-head makes it pos- I sible to couple with the hook 4 of an opposing 1 con ling on the sharpest curves, which cani not e accomplished with the ordinary hooks 4 on a curve greater than about fifteen and one-half degrees. 1 By referring more particularly to Fig. 2 it 1 will be observed that the pivot-pin 2 of the emergency-knuckle when the device is in couled position is situated close to the center line of draft on the coupling, whereby I decrease the tendency of said emergency-knuckle to turn out and disengage from the knuc- I kle 4, this location of the pivot-pin taking up some of the side motion of the coupling. While I prefer to form my improved emeri "ency-knuckle on lines substantially conforming to the receiving aperture in the opposing draw-head, my invention contemplates a configuration conforming to that of the ordinary Master Car-Builders or J anney type of couplin -hook only, such as is shown at 4, it having oen found in operation that such a configuration will operate to couple under all possible conditions, the essential feature being that the emergency-knuckle prgper is pivoted to move bodily laterally.
ith either of the above-described constructions I am able to confine my structure to a knuckle or hook proper-that is to say, dispensing with the necessity for employing a horn similar to the horn 9 of the opposing coupling, the use of which in an emergencyi l i I I 1 coupling renders the same more roperly a combined emergency-hookand (raw-head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters' Patent, is
1. An emergency-knuckle for car-couplings embodying a hook portion. front and outside faces conjointly shaped to conform to the receiving-aperture in an opposing draw-head of the J anney type, and an elongated shank adapted to be freely pivoted to its draw-head, said knuckle being cored out and having a pillar formed at the intersection of said front and outside faces to receive the wear thereon.
2. An emergency-knuckle for car-couplings embodying a hook portion only of the Master Car-Builders or J annoy type, and an elongated shank adapted to be freely pivoted in its draw-head, said parts being formed integral.
3. An emergency-knuckle for car-couplings embodying a hook portion, and an elongated shank adapted to be pivoted to adrawhead, the pivot-hole therein being inclined somewhat from the vertical.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDMUND P. KINNE.
