To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER M. KLING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State'of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to six-wheel trucks for cars.
It is applicable to railway-cars and has special features of utilityin its application to six-wheel trucks designed for motor-cars.
The primary purpose oi' my invention 1s to devise a construction of truck and arrangement of springs therefor which will obviate the practical diiiiculties experienced in providing springs of adequate strength and affordin room for the motors without unduly exten ing the length or other dimensions of the truck. To this end Ighave devised an improved center frame and bolster construction and elliptic spring-support, consisting in part of four double elliptic springs diagonally arranged, so as to provide room for the motor and also provide for the lateral and longitudinal swinging motion existing in sixwheel trucks of most approved construction. I am thus enabled to retain all the good qualities of the six-wheel truck while accommodating two. of the largest motors made for electric cars.
The improvements particularly consist in a novel construction of spring-carrying frame, a novel construction of bolster-frame, and a .novel combination of diagonally-arranged understood, I will proceed to describe a practical embodiment thereof with referencel to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a six-wheel truck, illustrating my invention. The central bolster is made up oftwo plates 1 1, bent as shown in Fi s. 4 and 5, to
impart transverse strength an rigidity and united at their ends, where they rest on longitudinal truss-beams 2. (Shown in plan in Fig. 3, in transverse section in Fig. 5, and in side elevation in Fi s. 6 and 7.) The lower members la of the y olster are turned up at their ends, as shown at l", Figs. 4 and 5, to afford thrust-bearings for the ends of the upper member 1 and give greater rigidity thereto. On the elevated center of the upper member 1 is the bolster plate or boss 1, on which the car-body rests in customary manner with capacity for limited oscillatory motion in a horizontal plane.
The rocking motion of the car-body in a transverse vertical plane is sustained by arcformed bosses 3 on arched side plates 4, bolted at their ends to transverseplates 5, which rest on brackets 6, by which theyr` are secured to the longitudinal truss-beams 2. The truss-beams 2 rest at their ends on elliptic springs 7 four in number, diagonally arranged, as indicated in the plan views, Figs. 1 and 3. The elliptic springs 7 are secured at topby clips 7a, by which the leaves of the upper member of the spring are united, and are seated at bottom on plates 8, having oblong. apertures 9, Fig. 8, for reception of the clips 10, which surround and unite the plates forming the lower member of the respective elliptic springs. are bolted on the corners of a quadrangular sup orting-frame, one side of which is shown in t e detail plan view, Fig. 8, consisting of transverse plates or bars 11 and longitudinal connecting plates or bars 11-a and longitudinal rods or bars 12 directly underneath the sprin -seats 8, with projecting ends forming roun gudgeons 12, which are received by eyes on the lower end of Vswinging hangers 13, as shown in Fig. 4, dependingby eyes in their upper ends from bolts 14 in saddle-plates 15, xed by bolts 16 to the top of brackets 17, which are in turn bolted to stron transverse beams 18, resting and secured at t eir ends in The apertured seat-plates 9 ICO brackets 19, Which are rmly bolted to I- beams 20, extending from end to end of the truck, forming the lside beams of the truckframe and united Aat their ends by cornerieces 21 tothe transverse beans 22 of the ame. 1. In a six-Wheel truck for cars the combi- .nation of a ccntralibolster and bolster-iframe porting frame is suspended from the carrying-frame of the truck.

In a six-Wheel car-truck, the combination of a transverse bolster adapted to support the-car-body and permit relative oscillation thereof on avertical axis central to the bolster, a quadrangular bolster-frame having side plates carryingarc-formed bearings concentric with the vertical axisiof oscillation, to arrest and sustain oscillation of the-body in a transverse vertical plane, springs on which said1 bolster and bolster-frame are-supported, a quadrangular supporting-frame for I said springs and means sustaining said springsupporting frame from the carrying-frame of the truck. 1
