act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a double-acting spring-hinge, the object being to provide a simple and efficient device of this character by means of which sagging of the doors supported thereby due to a loss of tension in the springs is entirely avoided; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinge constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of one of the leaves thereof. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of one of said leaves or the bottom plan view of the other thereof. Fig. 5 is a central vertical longitudinal section of said hinge on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a collar employed. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a key employed. Fig. 8 is a detail plan view of a tension-adjusting member employed. Fig. 9 is a plan view of another collar employed. Fig. 10 s a plan section of the hinge on the line 10 10 of Fig. 5.
My said hinge comprises two leaves A and B, both of which are identical in shape and size and each of which is provided at one of its extreme ends with what I will term a long flange C and adjacent its other end with what I will term a short flange D, said flanges being provided with openings disposed in vertical alinement with each other and which are adapted to register with similar openings in the flanges of the other leaf to receive a pin or shaft E, constituting the pivot upon which said leaves rotate. The body portion of each of said leaves is of greater thickness midway between than at its side edges and each is provided midway between said side edges with a longitudinal slot F, extending almost the entire length of said portion. The inner walls of said slots F serve as stops, as will be hereinafter more fully described. In assemblin the hinge the said leave's A and B are so relatively disposed that the short flange of each is disosed inwardly of and in surface contact with the long flange of the other, and on said in or shaft E are disposed loosely two colars G and H, respectively in surface contact with said short flanges D of said members A and B. The said collar G is provided with a longitudinal slotted hub I, either of the recesses in which is adapted to receive and engage one end J of a spiral tension-spring K, the other endL of the latter being similarly received and engaged in the slotted hub M of a tension-adjusting member N, disposed on said shaft in surface contact with said collar H. The latter is provided in its upper face with an annular groove 0 and with radiallydisposed recesses P in its periphery communicating with said groove 0, the said recesses P being adapted to receive a key Q, provided at one end with a lateral projection or arm R, which is adapted to be received in said groove 0 and serves as a pivot on which said key turns. The said tension-adjusting member N is provided with radial slots S in its periphery at intervals, which are adapted to register with said recesses P and receive the free end portion of said key Q to lock the same against rotation relatively to said collar H. The said collars G and H are provided each with two diametrically oppositely disposed projections T, one face of each of which is radially disposed and diametrically flush with the corresponding face of the other thereof, said faces being opposite y disposed relatively to each other, and said radial faces of said collar G being in turn oppositely disp'osed relatively to the corresponding faces of the projections of said collar H. In each of said radially-disposed faces of said projections T a set-screw U is mounted, the head of "which is preferably flat and of as large area relatively to said radial face as space will permit, said heads serving to relieve said radial faces of wear and enabling the hinge to be adjusted, as will be hereinafter more fully described. By means of said slot F each of said leaves has its body portion divided into two parts, the opposing faces of which are of relatively great width. In each of said opposing faces, at opposite ends of the leaf immediately inwardly of said flanges C and D, I provide a lateral recess V, through which one of said projections T of said collars G and H is adapted to pass when said leaves A and B are rotated relatively to each other. In turning said leaves relatively to each other in one direction one of said collars G and H will be revolved therewith by reason of engage ment of one of the side faces of the slot F therein with one of said projections T, the other of said collars being meanwhile held against rotation by the engagement of one of its projections with the oppositely-disposed side face of the slot F in the other member, the other or free projection of each of said collars G and H being adapted to pass freely through one of said recesses V, disposed in its path as said leaves are turned. 1n the said inner faces of each of said slots F of each member opposite the lateral recess V in the opposite face of said slot I mount a set-screw W, upon the head of which the heads of setscrews U are adapted, respectively, to bear,
' said set-screws W being adapted to relieve the faces of said slots of wear.
When the hinge is assembled, the said spring K is slack and said key Q will be in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6. Primarily said spring must be brought to the tension necessary to swing the door, such tension depending upon the width and weight of the door. This is effected by rotating the said member N relatively to said collar and in a direction opposite to the direction in which said collar H is normally held against revolution. Any suitable tool may be employed for this purpose, and when the desired tension has been imparted to said spring K said key Q is forced at its free end into one of said slots S in said memberN and the latter thus locked against movement relatively to said collar H. Where very light doors are employed, the tension of said spring K may be rendered greater than desirable when said member N is turned through an are equal to the distance between two adjacent recesses S and may be too slack unless turned through an are less than the aforesaid. In the latter event any slack may be taken up by adjusting said set-screws U and W, as will be obvious. The latter are more particularly adapted, however, to correct any slight inclination laterally of saidhinge when mounted, which inclination would act to cause said door to normally raise slightly .to either side of its normal position, and this obviously would be objectionable. It will be noted that in my said hinge the sole function of the spring is to maintain the door normally between the limits of its movement,
but does not in any manner carry any part of the weight of said door, the latter being carried entirely by said flanges C and D and said pin or shaft E.
I claim as my invention 1. A double-acting spring-hinge, comprising two uniform leaves each provided at and adjacent its opposite ends with flanges, said flanges of one leaf being adapted when said leaves are relatively inverted to rest upon the flanges of the other leaf, a shaft passing through all of said flanges to pivotally secure said leaves to each other, disks disposed on said shaft, radial projections on said disks, stops disposed on said leaves in the path of the said projections, the stops disposed in the path of the projections of one of said disks being oppositely disposed relatively to the stops in the path of the projections of the other disk, and a spring disposed in operative relation to said disks to normally maintain the same at the limits of their movement determined by said stops.
2. A double-acting spring-hinge, comprising two uniform leaves each provided at and adjacent its opposite ends with flanges, said flanges of one leaf being adapted when said leaves are relatively inverted to rest upon" the flanges of the other leaf, a shaft passing through all of said flanges to pivotally secure said leaves to each other, disks disposed on said shaft, radial projections on said disks, stops disposed on said leaves in the path of the said'projections, the stops disposed in the path of the projections of one of said disks being oppositely disposed relatively to the stops in the path of the projections of the other disk, and a spring disposed in operative relation to said disks to normally maintain the same at the limits of their movement determined by said stops, and set-screws disposed in' the meeting faces of said projections and said stops to relieve the same of wear and permit relative adjustment of the limits of movement of said disks.
3. A double-acting spring-hinge comprising two uniform leaves each provided at and adjacent its opposite ends with flanges, said flanges of one leaf being adapted when said leaves are relatively inverted to rest upon the flanges of the other leaf, a shaft passing through all of said flanges to pivotallysecure said leaves to each other, disks disposed on said shaft, radial projections on said disks, stops disposed on said leaves in the path of the said projections, the stops disposed in the path of the projections of one of said disks being oppositely disposed relatively to the stops in the path of theprojections of the other disk, a wheel provided with peripheral recesses disposed on said shaft adjacent one of said disks, the latter being provided with a recess in its upper face and a radial recess the other of said disks and connected at its I0 communicating therewith, a key disposed in ends therewith.
