Description

UNITED sTATEs lCHARLES w. MERRILL, oE
-Los ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
ROUTE-INDEX. f
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES W. MERRILL, a citizen of the United States, residing fat Los Angeles, in the countypofLosAngeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Route Index, of which the following is a specification. l @An ob'ect of this invention isl toprovide means w ereby a person may readily ascertain the most convenient route by which to reach a given destination from a given place.
Another object is toprovide a complete route-directoryin the most condensed form, also to give the information in the most-convenient form for ready reference.
` Another object is to provide means for as certaining at a glance the connections between one line and other lines of travel. I
' vAnother object is to-provide condensed means for readily ascertaining the distance from one place to another by a determined route and also the distance traveled by car and that to be traveled afoot or otherwise.
. A further object of this invention is to provide means for readily ascertaining the shortest and best route leading from one point to another, it not being necessary for a person provided with anv index arranged according to the principles of this invention always to refer to or pass by the same point or locality in going from one .place to another.
. ed to be applied to city directories now in use Onelof the most important'objects of this invention is to provide indexing means adaptwithout altering the arrangement or materially increasing the size of such directories.
l will illustrate the principle of this invention by referring to an application of the same covering the street-railways, the streets, residences, public buildings, land places of interest to be reached in a city. In cities where there is a concentration of car-lines at some central locality a graphic list of carlines and their connections may bemade in` the form of'a map.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention as applied to a route-index for a modern city. i`
Figure 1 is a fragmental view of an open boolcprovided with a route-index embvody- Ing this invention, showing the appearance of a page thereof which contains a portion of the thorou hfare-list. Fig. 2 shows a continuation o the thoroughfare-list. Fig. 3 is a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application sied Imis, 1905.4 semina. 265,510.
v Patented Dec. 25, 1906.l
broken fragmental view showing one of the routes of the route-'list on the right 'side and on the left side an index to be used in referuationvof the route list, shown in Fig. 5 illustrates the feature of my 4invention which adapts it to be any city directory.
In constructing ber of lists-as, for example, a thoroughfareand a place-list C.
directory containing a designating headings series of house-numbers 'which vthe route extends, said house-numbers being arranged in progressive order from one The drawings show a where the route is intersected by cross-streets,
positioned to associate them with the names of said cross-streets.
30 designates theaforementioned names of the streets along which the route extends or the car runs, said names being desirably distinguished by being printed in a different style of type. employed mainly to designate streets cross,- ing the route, as already stated, may also be where the car 'stops. The numeral 1 mayindicate a station at the end of the line from .which the numbers start. v 5 designates the headings contained in the list A of the street-designating headings. The street-designating headings 5 are followed by names 51', designating the cross-streets.
\ 55 designates street-numbers of the street named by the heading, said numbers indicating the points at which the cross-streets 51 opposite thereto' are intersected.
ring to the routes contained in said list. Fig. 4 andthe left portion of Fig. 5 show a contin-I The right page applied to this index I provide a nurnlist A for the streets, a route or car-line list B, l
list of numbered route-j 1, each followed by a 2 of the streets along* end of the route and designating the points whether numbered dwellings are actually Each of the`A of travel to i lstreets referred to or otherwise definitely The numbers 4, which are regarded as indicating the'stations or pointsl the names of said cross-streets, there being a IOO 50 designates-numbersarranged in a seriesof pairs followingeaeh of the street-designatlng headings 5, there being a air of numbers placed opposite'l tol each of t' 'e' cross-streets 51. designates one of said pair of numbers, said number referring, as hereinafter described, to one of the route-designating headings: 5b' designates the other of said pair of numbers, which refersto a number of the aforementioned row of numbers 4, which referto cross-streets in list B:
Throughout. the various lists-52 designatesnumbers inv parentheses. which indicate theV number of block's'to-be walked or otherwise traveled'before reaching acar-line in goingxtoaglvenplace or afterleaving the oar. traveling. on the route taken'.
Reference is now made tothe leftl page shown in Fig. 4- t'o explain al furtherdetail of the manner in whichA I index-1.. A @Car-line 17` is foltlien by the ynaine ("AdamsfW. of the first street along; which) the car runs from the starting-point.A Thefigure l of the ordinal.` 45 atA the leftk ofl said. name may be used alone to designate the starting-point or firststation, which kinthe illustration given inFig. 4A is ati the intersection ofl West Arlington streets, street,.as -indicat'ed by the ordinals 2, and at 2600 Arlington street,as indicated by the ordinals45. Ttrisimmaterial what number the ordinals4 beginwith if said numbers are arrangedzinA a series asoendingin regular order. Referringstill to Fig. 4=, the numbers2 down to andi including 1700 (whichisopposite Normandie S.) are alll Adamsstreet. yLikewise ofV Twentyfourth K Twenty-fourth street, but to 2400 South Normandie'street.
2400 at the left Car-line' 17 is described asrunning fromv Arlington street along West Adams street, acrossv Gimmar'on, Hermosa streets-. ac.,` to South Normandie street, thence on South Normandie street across Twenty-fifth street to Twenty-fourth street, thence along Twentyfourth street.
Referring to theY place-li'stC, de'signatesthe appropriate heading.y therefor, hotels being` referred toink the present instance. 60 designates names ofY places (or of business houses orf individuals inother applications of the invention) to be located, and 61 refersto printedmatter constituting means for designating.v the location of said places on the streets; where the same are situated.` The numbers5a, 5l), and 52 arev also usedA in connection` with` the place-listv Cto indicate the route -to'be taken andthe distance tofbetraveledlafterleavingthe car going to or before reaching the car ingoing from the points 60. For example, assume the inquirer to be at the lcrossing which is `will see that car-line 17 is the mdicat'e the nearest whole number of blocks..
prefer to arrangev thev Adams and` being at 2300 Adams house-numbers of does not refer toy 'preferably arranged Fig; 2,) he will run his eye along the numbers 51 in the left-hand column until he finds the number approximating the number on Arlington to which he wishes to go. For example, we will assume that he wishes to go to 2525 Arlington. .He will see by the list that Adams street is the street having the car-line nearest to the number on. Arlington which he wishes to reach, because Adams crosses Arlington at 2600. Then readingthenumbers-tofthe extreme right he car-line he* wishes-to take and that he should get ofl' the car at station N o. 2 on that car-line. Then he may turn to the index G of hotels, where he findsthathis nearest station to car-line 17 is 74 andthat the Angelus hoteliis one block from No. 74 on car-'line 17. By reference to the car-line list 17 he finds that No. 74 (see right-hand page, Fig. 4) isv at the corner of Third and Spring streets,-being No. 200 hird street. As the Angelus hotel is at the corner of Fourth and Spring, he will walk one blockalong Spring street to Third street and there willltake a car on line 17-namely, the West Adamsstreet and Boyle Heights car on the Los'AngelesInteriuban car-line. Hewill also have noted from the-list under the heading Car-line 17 that his car runs directly to the corner of Adamsand Arlington and that he will there be at No. 2800 Adams and No. 2600 Arlington. In eaclrinstance a number 5a found in list Ai or G isa: number used in' numbering a route-designatin g heading, i and anumber- 5b of list A or C is used in numbering a station under one ofthe car-line headings.` In thisway it is possible for one tof-determine with ease and convenience how to reachlany of the listed destinations from any of the listed points of departure.
The left portion of Fig. 3 shows a portion o f an indeXD of the numbered car-lineheadings in compact form and may be arranged alphabetically to enble a person readily to ascertain the number of a car-line containedin list B.
10 designates numbers arranged. in definite positionwith relation to oertainstations of.` a given4 car-line and indicatiirg` a crossing or junction with one or more car-lines which may readily be reached from said given carline at said station. The numbers 10 of the numbered headings `1 of said car-lines are in a row, as shown in Fig. 3, just below the cross-street-or station where said junction occurs. This feature of the index assists a person to determine what car-line to take when it is necessary to transfer from one car-line to another and where tov make connections with the various car-lines.
In this specification and the appended. claims the term "station means a point of IOO IlO
