- .1. QFMECHANICA'LF mov mzm'.
To all whom it may concern: v
Beit'known that I, J OHANN HOFMANN, a resident of West Covington, in thecounty of Kenton andState of Kentucky, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Mechanical Movements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it apvin which continuous rotary motion in either pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvedmechanical movement, the object of the invention beingto provide improved mechanism direction is converted into alternating rotary motion ,and my improvements are particu.
v l arly adapted for use on washing-machines and the like and is of simple construction and perfect in operation. I
With this object in view the invention consists in certainnovel features of construction and combinations and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described,
improvements.
, and pointed out in the claim.
1 represents the cover of, a washing-machine or'other suitable support, towhich the base-plate 2 of my improved frame-3 is secured in any approved manner. Vertical standards 4' are-made integral with base 2 Y andhave bearings 5 at their upper ends, preferably removably secured to the standards 4 by screws, as shown, for convenience in assembling the parts. In-these bearings 5 a drive-shaft 6 is mounted and has secured on one end, which projects beyond a standard 4:,
collar 7, and a'drive-gear 8 is secured on the 1 drive-shaft. on the opposite side of said'stand ard, said'collar and gear serving to hold the shaft against longitudinal movement. This drive-gear 8 receives motion from a smaller gear9, fixed to an operating-shaft 10, supported in a bracket 11 at one end of base plate 2 and in a bearing in .astandard 4 and has secured onits outer end. a hand-wheel 12 orother suitable driver.
i I Specification of Letters Patent. .Ap nmm filed February 13,1903. Serial N 143.255.
of my invention.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
The drive-shaft 6 has loosely mounted thereon, facing each other and spaced apart, beveled segmental gears 13, both meshing with a beveled pinion 14, fixed upon a vertical driven shaft 15', supported in an elongated bearing 16 in base-plate 2, and this shaft 15 forms thedasher or agitator rod of a washing-machine.
. Between segmental gears 13 and keyed to slide on drive-shaft 6 is a clutch 17, having an annular cam-groove 18, into which the upper end of the driven shaft 15 projects, and inclined lugs 19 are located at each end of the clutch, and inclined sockets 20 of greater width-than the lugs are providedin the hubs of segmental gears 13 to receive said lugs 19 and alternately lock, the segments to the drive-shaft.
' The operation of my im rovements is as follows: The operating-sha t 10 is turned to continuously revolve drive-shaft 6 and drivegear 7;in either direction through the medium of gear 9, meshing therewith. As driveshaft 6 is revolved clutch 17 is also revolved, and as its cam-groove 18 turns on the end of shaft 15 the clutch will be moved longitudinally to clutch with first one segmental gear 13 and then the other, and thus while one segmental gear. acts as a. driver the otheris an idler, and vice versa, thus alternately revolving pinion l4 and drive-shaft 15 in reverse directions.
' Various changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not confine myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such. changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spiritand scope Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1 The combination with a frame, having. a
vertical bearing, and horizontal bearings, of v a driven shaftmounted in the vertical bearing and having-a rigid projection at its upper A end, a driving-shaft mounted over the driven shaft, in said horizontal bearings, a gear on the driven shaft, two gear-segments loose on the driving-shaft always meshing with the gear on the driven shaft, and a clutch-sleeve rotatable With the driving-shaft and adapted to lock the gear-segments alternately thereto,--said clutch-sleeve having a single earn- 5 groove to receive the rigid projection on the driven shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed this J OHANN HOFMANN.
