STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. YOUNG, OF ELKHART, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWIN L. FOSTER, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
FISHING-REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11,1906.
Application filed e 16.1905. Serial No. 265,548.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen A. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Reels and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. use the same.
This invention relates to fishing-reels.
One object of the invention is to improve generally fishing-reels now in use.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a reel of the character stated embodying such characteristics as to permit the line to be drawn outwardly against the friction of the gearwheels or freely, as may be desired.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a fishingreel of such character that the drum thereof may be rotated against the friction of gear-wheels, or whereby the gearwheels may be thrown out of engagement with each other to permit of the free rotation of the drum.
WVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and mi nor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved reel attached to a fishing-rod. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the reel with the operating-handle removed and the gear and pinion in mesh. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, illustrating the gear and pinion out of mesh with each other, the operating-handle being also shown.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference characters 1 and 2 designate disks, which are spaced apart and secured in their spaced relation by means of suitable posts 3. Journaled centrally of the plates is a drum 4, having a shaft 4 passing therethrough, which protrudes through the disk 1 for the reception of a pinion 3.
Pivotally mounted upon the outer face of the disk 1 and upon one side thereof by means of a suitable pivot-pin 6 are upper and lower plates 7 and 8. J ournaled through the said plates 6 and 7 is a short shaft 9, whose outer end extends through the upper plate 7 for connection therewith of a suitable operat ing-handle 5. Arranged fixedly upon the said short shaft 9 between the said plates 7 and S is a geanwheel 10, which is designed to mesh with the aforesaid pinion 3, which latter is carried by the drum-shaft.
Pivotally mounted upon the outer face of the aforesaid disk 1 and upon the side thereof opposite to the pivotal connection of the aforesaid plates by means of a suitable pivotpin 11 is a' lever 12, having one end of a spring 13 connected between its ends, as at 14, the opposite end of the spring being connected to the projection 15, which latter is arranged adjacent the aforesaid pinion 3. This lever is detachably connected at one end to a grasping member 16, the said lever 12 and grasping member 16 being designed to throw the aforesaid pinion and gear out of mesh with each other in a manner to be presently explained.
It will be observed that the plates 7 and S at their ends opposite to their pivoted. ends are secured together by means of a suitable pin 17, to which and between the said plates is connected one end of a lever 18, which is connected at its opposite end to the pivotal joint 19 between pivoted elements 20 and 21, which latter form a toggle-lever connection. It will thus be understood that the levers 18, 20, and 21 are pivoted together by a suitable pivot-pin, as indicated by the aforesaid reference character 19. The element 20 is pivoted to the swinging end of the lever 12, and the element 21 is similarly pivoted to the disk.
The drawings disclose that the reel may be secured to a pole 22 in any suitable manner, and it will be undertood that when the aforesaid pinion 3 and gear-wheel 10 are in mesh with each other the cord or line 23 may be pulled outwardly of the reel against the friction between said pinion and gear-wheel. When it is desired that the line 23 shall run freely from the reel, it is simply necessary to employ one finger or the whole hand to exert a pull upon the grasping member 16, which will cause the lever 12 to be moved against the action of the helical spring 13 and cause the plates 7 and 8 to be moved outwardly upon their pivot-pins 6, resulting in the aforesaid gear-wheel 10 being thrown out of engagement'with the said pinion 3. It will thus be seen that the drum or reel proper may have a free rotation when a cast is made, and that the free rotation of the drum or reel proper is permitted during the time the member 16 is held against return movement, the spring 13 returning the lever to normal position and remeshing the gear and pinion when the member 16 is released.
The member 16 extends beyond the opposite side of the rod 22 from the reel, so that it lies in position to be easily manipulated by a finger of the hand holding the rod. By reason of the fact that the member 16 is detachable from the lever 12 it may be removed, so that it may be out of the way when the reel is to be used without shifting the gear.
What is claimed is 1. A fishing-reel comprising spaced disks, a drum rotatably mounted between the disks, a pinion mounted to rotate with the drum, plates pivotally secured upon the outer face of one of the disks, a gear-wheel mounted between said plates for mesh with said pinion, a lever pivotally mounted upon the outer face of the disk carrying thesaid plates, a grasping member secured to the lever, pivoted elements mounted on the said disk and pivoted tothe free end of the said lever, and to the plates for movement of the plates to bring the gear into and out of mesh with the pinion when the lever is moved.
2. A reel comprising a revolubly-m'ounted drum, a pinion mounted to rotate with the drum, a plate pivoted at one end, a gearwheel journaled upon the plate, said plate being movable upon its pivot. to bring the gear-wheel into and out of mesh with the pinion, winding mechanism connected with the gear-wheel, a pivoted lever, a member carried by the lever for movement thereof, connections between the lever and the plate for movement of the latter to bring the gear out of mesh with the pinion when the lever is moved in one direction, a spring arranged to hold the lever yieldably with the gear in mesh With the pinion,
3. The combination with a fishing-reel comprising a revoluble drum, means for, revolving the drum arranged for movement into and out of operative position, and means for moving the revolving means, said means including an operating member arranged to extend beyond the opposite side of a rod to that to which the reel is attached.
4. A reel comprising a frame, a drum journaled in the frame, a pinion connected with the drum for rotation therewith, spaced plates pivoted to the frame at one end, a gear journaled between the plates, means for revolving the gear, said plates being movable upon their pivot to bring the gear into and out of mesh with the pinion, a lever pivoted at one end between the ends of the plates opposite to their pivot-point, a lever pivoted to the other end of the first-named lever, said second lever being pivoted to the frame, a third lever pivoted to the first two levers at their pivotal union, a fourth lever pivoted at one end to the frame and at its other end to the third lever for movement of the first three levers to move the plates upon their pivot, a spring connected to the fourth lever and to the frame, and arranged to hold said lever with the gear in mesh with the pinion, and a grasping member connected with the fourth lever for movement thereof.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature A. E. KINivEY, H. O. SHATTUOK.
