To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leslie, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to fence-posts and its primary object is to provide a cement base to which the post may be readily and firmly secured and which is provided with means protecting from injury that portion of the base projecting above the ground.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherem Figure 1 is a vertical and central section of a fence-post constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 2 designates a cement base which has its upper portion reduced to provide a vertical extension 3 and a horizontal shoulder 4. Metal members 5 are recessed into the sides of the extension 3 and extend from the upper end thereof to points below the shoulder 4, the upper ends of the members being turned down into engagement with the extremity of the extension. The members 5 have a width equal to that of the extension 3 and so reinforce and strengthen the same as to prevent injury thereto. The post 6, which is preferably constructed of wood, has its lower end reduced to provide a depending extension 7 and a shoulder 8. The post 6 is applied to the base 2 to position the extension 7 in engagement with the extension 3, the shoulder 8 in engagement with the upper ends of the members 5, and its lower end 9 in engagement with the shoulder 4, and it is secured in applied position by bolts 10 passing through the extensions 3 and 7 and the members 5. The bolts 10 also secure the members 5 in applied position.
The base is let into the ground to the depth of the shoulder 4 to support the post 6. above the ground and to thereby prevent the post from rapidly decaying. The manner of securing the post to the base permits the post to be readily removed and replaced when occasion demands.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention should be understood without a further extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim is 1. A fence-post comprising a base having its upper portion reduced to provide an extension, members secured to and reinforcing said extension, a post shaped to receive the extension, and means by which the post is secured to the base.
2. A fence-post comprising a base having its upper portion formed to provide an extension, members secured to and reinforcing said extension, a post shaped to receive the extension, and means passing through the extension, members and post, said means securing the post and members in applied position.
3. A fence-post comprising a base having its upper portion reduced to provide a vertical extension and a horizontal shoulder, members secured to and reinforcing the extension, a post shaped to receive the extension, and means passing through the extension, members and post, said means securing the post and members in position.
4. A fence-post comprising a cement base having its upper portion reduced to provide a vertical extension and a horizontal shoulder, metal members recessed into the sides of the extension and extending from the upper end thereof to points below the shoulder, the upper ends of the members being turned down into engagement with the extremity of the extension, a wood post having its lower end reduced to provide a depending extension and a shoulder, the post being applied to the base to position the lower end of its extension in engagement with the horizontal shoulder thereof and its shoulder in engage ment with the upper ends of the members, and bolts passing through the extensions and the members.
